Rhino poached at Forever Resorts
This shop, belonging to Juhar and Beyn Deffacho, caught fire on Saturday, 18 June. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba On Saturday, 18 June, the community of Bela-Bela came together in the early hours of the morning to help put out a fire at a foreign-owned shop in the township. Members of the community carried buckets to douse the flames threatening the business of Juhar Deffacho and his younger brother Beyn Deffacho, but the shop was reduced to ashes. The fire was allegedly caused by hot wax polish. In an interview where Juhar served as interpreter, Beyn said that he was working behind the counter when he saw smoke and a small flame coming from a wax pot on the
stove. “There was a loud explosion, and I ran into the street,” he said. Beyn said that when he first saw members of the community rushing toward the shop he panicked, thinking that they were going to attack him, but they were all there to help battle the flames. The fire consumed everything in the shop and also affected the next-door Kwadi family. Several elderly women who had been in the nearby yard had to be rushed to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Juhar said that the damage to the building and their stock was estimated to be in the hundreds of rands, but could not say precisely how much. Juhar also took the

He pulled off his jacket and tie and started rallying members of the community to help. “I was among the first to arrive,” he said. “I called on passers-by to help, and many people suspended their personal activities to assist.” He said that he hoped that other communities could learn from this generosity of spirit.
Of course, not everything could be sunshine and roses. Several members of the community were seen fleeing the scene carrying goods varying from frozen meat to cigarettes. The community blames emergency services for their late response, which they say is typical. Johannes Chauke from Leseding, one of the first to start helping the family to remove their furniture, said that it was half an hour before the fire brigade arrived. “We appeal to the municipality to speed up their service when it comes to things like this,” he said. “If they had responded more quickly, half the store could have been saved.”

Street wedding allegedly in breach of permit
Poaching results in double tragedy This rhino was one of two victims killed by poachers in Bela-Bela. The other, a Protrack guard, was allegedly killed as the rhino was poached. Photo supplied

A marching band trumpeted along as the groom made his way to the ceremony. Photo: Justin Steyn Justin Steyn & Andries van der Heyde A traditional wedding in Bela-Bela which was held on Saturday 18 June in Reitz Street may be in violation of its permit. The celebrations saw a local couple, Ophelia Pholosi and Thekiso Mataboge, exchanging their vows in front of 300 guests in front of Ophelia’s parents’home. The street had been closed off for the proceedings to take place. Ophelia’s sister, Nthabiseng Pholosi, explained the customs involved in such a wedding. “In our culture (Sotho) two weddings take place, the first being a traditional wedding and the other a ‘white wedding’. In the case of a traditional wedding it is customary to have the wedding at the homes of both individuals who are getting married. We had the first part of the wedding here at my father’s house and then went on to Thekiso’s parents’ home at Mampatile in the township,” she said. Nthabiseng said that the wedding is more family orientated and focuses on the joining of the two houses. She explained that her father, Thabo Moselane, had applied for the permit to have the wedding on the street two months prior and was approved within 2 weeks. The permit was valid for 24 hours and was subject to conditions such as the road not being damaged and that only one line is to be closed on the road where applicable. Moselane said that shortly after he had applied for the permit, he notified his neighbours of the pending celebrations and even invited them to attend. “I did not want to inconvenience anyone and made sure that my neighbours were notified accordingly,” he
Pholosi was walked out by her cousin, Kabelo Pholosi. Photo: Justin Steyn said. Moselane said that he had received no complaints regarding the wedding and was only approached by DA Councillor, Kobus van der Merwe, who asked if the wedding had been permitted. Moselane was then able to produce the permit. Van der Merwe told reporters that the head of the traffic department at the municipality has to take into consideration, whenever an application is brought to close a road, if the event will cause disruptions and during which time is should be held before a permit is granted. “Other alternative venues could have been considered, but the fact that the road was damaged where tent poles were struck into the road and two lanes instead of one was used for the venue is totally unacceptable,” said Van der Merwe. The permit, which The BEAT has a copy of, stated that the road must not be damaged during the function and that only one lane was allowed for use. On the day of the wedding two lanes were used and the road was struck with tent poles. “I am not totally against the closing of a road for a special event, but roads are essentially for traffic. These types of events, where a tent is pitched, should not become a regular occurrence in town, because it might happen that a main road is considered for closure in the future and there are by-laws in place that are clear on the matter.” Van der Merwe said that he will look into the matter as soon as possible. The issue was brought under the attention of Precious Raputsoa, head of Planning and Social Development at the Municipality, who made a note to take the matter up with the relevant department.
Tragedy unfolded at Forever Resorts in BelaBela when a security guard and rhino were killed on the morning of Saturday Friday 17 June. The relationship manager of the resort, Ziske Haak, told The BEAT that a group of seven heavily armed poachers gained access to the Reserve and led the Protrack Anti-Poaching Unit, which were guarding the rhinos, into an ambush. The three guards were then tied up and one of them was critically wounded. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. After the Protrack Team were neutralised, Haak said that the poachers went into the reserve and proceeded to shoot and dehorn the rhino cow before fleeing the scene through the reserve the same way they came in. She added that an investigation has been launched and the police are currently examining the evidence. Unfortunately, at this point in time no further information could be provided. This is considered an isolated incident on the property. “We would like to ensure all guests of Warmbaths, A Forever Resort that the Resort is safe and that in no way, is there any reason to be alarmed. This incident took place on a secluded area of the property which is on the opposite side of the
reserve” said Kobus Tait, Managing Director of Forever Resorts. Pending their investigations, Warrant officer Jannie Venter of the Bela-Bela Police said that the police have opened a case of murder and illegal hunting. Venter said that two of the poachers stayed behind guarding the captured guards as the other five proceeded to poach the rhino. Venter said that the wounded guard apparently told the poachers that he was feeling cold and they proceeded to make a fire for him. The two poachers left the guards immediately after the rhino had been killed. The wounded guard died shortly thereafter. The remaining guards freed them from their bonds by using the fire that was made. The police and members of the Heritage Protection Group (HPG) were dispatched to the scene. Ben Engelbreght of the HPG said that they followed seven sets of footprints through the reserve where they stopped at the R101 road en route to Pienaarsrivier. Several items, including an axe, a machete, an unknown firearm and camera were recovered. The name of the deceased may not be released before his body has been identified by relatives and funeral arrangements have been made.
Three in court for murder Lizzy Bapela Three suspects are expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court this week on charges of murder and burglary. This follows an incident at Extension 5, formerly known as Mandela Village, on Monday, 20 June. Detective Constable Frans Sekgobela of the Bela-Bela police said that the suspects were fighting with a friend of the complainant, Jerry Ntshudisane, when he tried to seek peace between the parties only to allegedly have them both turn on him. The detective added that Ntshudisane spent the night at a relative’s home, scared for his life after the suspects allegedly threatened him. The suspects allegedly then went to his home and found his uncle, whom they attacked and killed. “According to an eyewitness who cannot be named, the suspects broke all the windows to

the one-roomed house when they arrive at the complaint’s home and attacked his uncle. One of them hit him with a beer bottle on the head and again stabbed him on the right side of his waist, leaving him badly wounded. They turned his room upside down looking for the complainant, and stole his mattresses in
his shack at the backside of the yard,” said detective Sekgobela. “The eyewitness also said that the fight took place about 5 meters away from the house and that the deceased slowly crawled into the house where he died, appearing to be in a lot of pain. Apparently only one of the suspects was initially fighting
the deceased. The deceased allegedly appeared to be winning, and that was when the other two joined in to help their friend.” The eyewitness reportedly tried to intervene, advising the suspects to stop fighting and solve whatever issues they might have had with the deceased and complainant amicably, but they refused and continued fighting with him. Detective Sekgobela added that after the police were alerted to the incident, they traced the suspects and arrested them at their homes, recovering the mattresses in one of the suspects’ possession. On arrest, the suspects told the police that they were still looking for Ntshudisane. The police could not reveal what the argument had been about. The Detective led a team of investigators to the house where the suspects were nabbed and the stolen mattresses were found and confiscated.

Regional Achievements Awards for SANParks Northern Region Parks Lizzy Bapela Thabazimbi’s Marakele National Park was among the parks in the Northern Cluster of South African National Parks (SANParks) that celebrated their employees at an achievement awards ceremony that took place on Monday, 20 June. SANParks spokesperson Divhani Maremba said that regional achievements awards take place in SANParks as a way of recognising those employees that are working very hard at park level to make the national parks what they are. He added that these awards instil a culture of achievement and excellence, encourage excellent performance and ensure a
continuous quality service for their stakeholders. He also said that they then feed into the annual Kudu Awards which are open to all the employees of the organisation and usually takes place later in the year. Speaking at the Awards, Acting Regional Manager of the Northern Region Johan Taljaard said the awards are just the organisation’s way of saying that they appreciate all that their employees in different parks of the region are doing. With less than two months left before the nation-wide elections on Wednesday, 3 August, The BEAT is forced to clarify and adjust our policy regarding political letters. We make this decision because The BEAT is committed to being apolitical, and short before election season we are swamped with letters relating to political matters. We will, therefore, for the next two months, have to be stricter in the selection of letters. We will unfortunately not be able to place letters that: * Serve to highlight the election manifests or political aims of a specific political party * Introduce new political parties * Introduce candidates to the public * Aim to win votes or to dissuade members of the public from voting for other parties * Seek to cast suspicion on other candidates Political parties are, however, more than welcome to place advertisements in The BEAT introducing their goals, candidates, and policies to the community. A good goal for this would be a quarter page advertisement which costs R2 224 in black and white and R3 0004.80 in colour. Feel free to phone our head office at (014) 736 2723 or contact any of our advertisement representatives for queries about political advertisements. Factual letters which fall within the above guidelines may still be used. Letter writers should keep in mind, however, that letters should not be longer than 350 words, and that the editorial staff reserves the right not to use letters.

The serious leak at the town park in Bela-Bela has been repaired shortly after being reported by a resident. The BEAT previously reported that Tshepo Dlamini, a resident, said that he grew concerned when he noticed the massive amount of water that had been leaking from the park’s pond area, which has transformed much of the grass into what he referred to as a marshy mess. “I visit the park quite regularly with my children, but I have noticed a leak that seems to come from somewhere near the pond area. “I am concerned that the area might become unpleasant for those who visit the park,” he said. The manager of the neighbouring bowling courts, Nick Pretorius, said that he suspects the leakage is caused by a damaged sprinkler pipe. In a brief telephonic interview, Risimati Ntikela, the municipality’s Head of Technical Services, confirmed the leakage and said that the leakage was due to a loose mount on one of the sprinklers. He added that the sprinklers have not been turned on since their installation and the problem may not have been noticed after the sprinkler system had been installed He has since encouraged the community to report similar events to his department.

Youth gone, but Local author to not forgotten release another book Mzamane Ringane Forty years after the killing of several students during a protest, people from different areas across the country still commemorate this significant day by wearing school uniform in remembrance of those who lost their lives on 16 June 1976. While June 16 has been marked as a national holiday in South Africa, the whole month is widely known as Youth Month with various programs held across the country to enlighten the current youth about this history. This year’s anniversary of the Soweto uprisings was commemorated under the theme “Youth Moving South Africa Forward”. It has been recorded that no less than 15 000 students gathered in Soweto on 16 June 1976, to participate in a peaceful march to Orlando Stadium. The planned protest was aimed at raising a united voice against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction at schools. During the launch of Youth Month 2016 on 1 June in Soweto, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Buti Manamela said that South Africa is a very different place today when compared to the past situation. Manamela said that the current government sees young people as resources to the country. “Our National Youth Policy 2020 characterises youth as assets whose power must be harnessed for the betterment of society. The NYP 2020 recognises that young people need a hand up and not a hand out. The policy is inclusive of all youth while giving priority to the most vulnerable,” he said. The Deputy Minister in the Presidency said that young people have a responsibility to understand their past in order to truly comprehend and make sense of their present. He also encouraged young people to grab the opportunities that are presented to them by the current government, so they can be able to improve their lives. “As young people, let us not abandon our own leadership looking for a non-existent messiah to bring us development and freedom. Government is providing opportunities to further one’s education, gain skills, start a business, start an internship, and get involved in youth service and many more. Let us exercise our leadership by grabbing these opportunities during Youth Month and thereafter to better our lives,” he concluded.
TK Mashaba Bela-Bela’s Dr Shuti Khumalo, a distinguished academic and former principal at Maokeng Primary School, is on the brink of releasing a third book. The book, which will be titled “The Profile of a Champion” details winning habits that can help one succeed in life. “The book is already selling like hotcakes,” said Khumalo. Profile of a Champion follows his first book, Enemies of a Dream, and an academic manuscript published in
Germany called “The role of transformational leadership in meeting school challenges.” Khumalo worked as a curriculum developer at the Tshwane University of Technology and is now with UNISA in the Department of Educational Leadership and Management at the main campus in Muckleneuck. He holds seven qualifications including a Ph.D in Education Management. In addition to his busy schedule, he is also the director of Human Capacity Management Services focusing on human capital development.

Terrors safe!
Bright future for Limpopo football
Terrors FC is safe from relegation and will be playing in the ABC Motsepe League in the 2016/2017 season. Photo: TK Mashaba
TK Mashaba Prayers may help, but hard work was what it took to save Terrors FC from relegation this season. Not their ownhard work, but that of Magezi FC, who secured Terrors’right to play in the ABC Motsepe League by winning promotion into the NFD on Saturday, 18 June. SAFA Limpopo provincial secretary Pat Seema confirmed that Terrors would be returning to the ABC Motsepe League in the 2016/2017 season.
Their first season in the ABC Motsepe League did not go well, with the newlyrelocated team playing 30 matches and losing 21 of them. The team moved from Modimolle to Bela-Bela shortly after winning promotion to the league, and team owner Speke Manamela attempted to blend Bela-Bela and Modimolle players, but luck was not on his side. Now it is back to the drawing board for Terrors, who may need to change their line-up if they plan on surviving next season.

The event was attended by, among others, the Department of Child Maintenance, and the Pienaarsrivier Ward Councillor was present. The event was, according to CPF chair Martina Mongatane, focused on fighting alcohol abuse among young people, and to
Netball team from Pienaarsrivier during the event. Photo: TK Mashaba honour the youth of June 1976 who fought against adversity. “The youth of today are not oppressed by apartheid but by our own mentality,” she said. “It is our character and the decisions we make that is the problem.” She also told the attending young people to take their education seriously, as education is the key to success. “We are supposed to be challenging the abuse of alcohol and drugs by any and all means,” said Mongotane. The day was filled with activities in diverse sports codes such as netball, soccer, sack racing and morabaraba.
SAFA Limpopo secretary Pat Seema (far right), conducted a meet and greet session during the recent provincial SAB League play-offs, where other SAFA dignitaries and Baroka FC’s director Khurishi Mphahlele (with glasses) congratulated Ratanang FC and Molemole Academy for gaining promotion. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane The Limpopo football fraternity has a good story to tell, to borrow a famous phrase from our own number one. Hardly a month after National First Division (NFD) side Baroka FC gained promotion into the Premiership Soccer League, ABC Motsepe League Limpopo champions Magesi FC made national headlines after gaining promotion into the NFD. Magesi FC not only gained promotion into the National First Division, but also bagged R1 million after beating KwaZulu Natal’s Kings United to be crowned ABC Motsepe League national champions. The KwaZulu Natal team also gained promotion and walked away with R500 000 for being runners-up. Magesi FC won the ABC Motsepe national play offs final 5-3 on penalties on Sunday 19 June, after playing to a 1all stalemate with their KwaZulu Natal counterparts. Both Magesi FC and Baroka FC will now be representing the province in the National First Division and the Premier Soccer League respectively. In a telephonic interview with The BEAT on Monday 20 June, SAFA Limpopo secretary Pat Seema said the promotion of Magesi FC is a direct
reflection of good administration and good governance by the Limpopo football fraternity. “We are very excited about Magesi FC’s promotion. As you are aware, the team was representing the entire province at the national play-offs. The promotion of Magesi FC reflects good administration and good governance in the province,” Seema said. He also indicated that Baroka FC’s recent promotion remains an inspiration to all other lower league teams, as they once played in the ABC Motsepe League. Seema anticipates that the ABC Motsepe League 2016/2017 season will be very competitive as all the sixteen teams will be aiming to maintain the standard set by Magesi FC. He highlighted that the province has been promoting a team into the NFD after almost every third season. The SAFA Limpopo secretary said they will be hoping to promote another team into the NFD next season. Waterberg soccer followers will also be watching the ABC Motsepe League with interest during this oncoming season, as the recently promoted Mokopane Ratanang FC will be representing the region in the SAFA Second League. The Waterberg team recently gained promotion after defeating Molemole Academy FC in the play-offs final.
