Justin Steyn Lizzy Bapela Police from Gauteng and Limpopo worked jointly to corner car theft sus-pects who were arrested at Bela-Bela on Tuesday, 21 November. Scores of people flocked to the corner of Potgieter Road and Marx Street to see what was happening when police and traffic vehicles, sirens blaring, sped towards the vicinity of the Bosveld Mall. According to the police, a tracker company called the owner of the stolen vehicle which was travelling at high speed from Pretoria headeding for Pienaarsrivier. The tracker company then alerted the police at Pienaarsrivier to be on the lookout for the vehicle.
At the time of the latter communication, the stolen vehicle had already sped past Pienaarsrivier, and the police at Bela-Bela were alerted to keep an eye out for the vehicle and its occupants. Bela-Bela cluster member, WarrantOfficer Sello Mangana, said the suspects noticed the police were chasing them and abandoned the car on the corner of Potgieter Road and Marx Street. The two suspects were cornered and arrested in the vicinity of the mall. Mangana said the suspects were detained and charged with the possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, and were expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court shortly. Other information suggested the two suspects were heading for Tzaneen.
The theft of 12 high-calibre rifles in Lephalale was likely to trigger panic buttons throughout the Waterberg, against the backdrop of increased incidents of the use of firearms in criminality. According to provincial police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the police in Villa Nora were on a manhunt for three suspects. The threesome reportedly broke into a farmhouse and stole 12 hunting rifles, two hand-guns and several rounds of ammunition. The incident took place in the early hours of Monday, 20 November. Ngoepe said the trio gained entry into the farmhouse through one of the windows, where they proceeded to the safe and stole the firearms and
ammunition. He further explained the owner of the farm was not home at the time when the crime was committed. Ngoepe said a charge of the illegal possession of firearms in contravention of the Firearms Control Act was also being probed against the farmer. Firearm owners are reminded to, at all times, comply with the provisions governing the safekeeping of weapons in their possession. “As we battle against violent crimes that are often perpetrated through the use of firearms, we can’t afford a situation where firearms end up in the hands of criminals, due to non-ompliance by legal gunowners,” Ngoepe warned. Anyone with information which can lead to the apprehension of the suspects is requested to contact the Villa Nora police on (014) 763 7952/4.
Modimolle-Mookgophong in desperate attempts to meet deadline Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene Van Staden said the municipality was pulling at all stops to boost revenue. Photo: Mzamane Ringane
Mzamane Ringane By the time you read this, the ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality’s desperate attempts to raise R4,2m by end of business on Tuesday, 21 November may have yielded positive results. The alternative was for residents to prepare for a tough December month.
Police uniforms suspect’s bail bid Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela businessman Jonas “Jeepers” Mthombeni’s attempt at bail application was postponed to later in the week, pending further police investigations. Mthombeni, who was allegedly nabbed in the possession of, among other official items, police uniforms, was expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court mid-week. He was arrested on Friday, 2 November, following a pre-dawn raid on his house wherein investigators found a military uniform, blue lights, gun-holsters and binoculars. On Monday, 20 November, Bela-Bela police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, said investigators had already discovered that the date stamp found among the confisticated stolen items had gone missing from the Gauteng SAPS Provincial Office. He said the police also confirmed that the military vest was stolen from the SANDF offices in Pretoria.
Earlier in the week the municipality undertook rigorous measures to ensure that the business sector, government departments and residents pay at least 50% of their outstanding accounts. Ratepayers were urged to make arrangements to settle the remaining balance, within a period of six months. The municipality pulled no punches as it disconnected the supply of electricity to several consumers whose accounts were outstanding. Among the affected parties, was the Limpopo MDR TB hospital at Modimolle. It was reported that Mookgophong SAPS station was also disconnected due to nonpayment by the Department of Public Works. The situation was however back to normal at the Modimolle hospital on Tuesday. Waterberg District Department of Health communications manager, Morobi Malatji said the situation was triggered by a slight
delay in payment of the account. “The account was paid late on Monday, and the municipality had already disconnected us at the time. The situation is now back to normal and all patients are back in their wards,” Malatji said. A resolution to send notices and subsequently discontinue services to debtors was taken by members of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Council last month. Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene Van Staden said it was essential for the municipality to raise the R4,2m, and eventually pay Eskom by the cut-off date. She urged all consumers to come forward and make payment arrangements with the municipality. Eskom has since placed an advertisement in The BEAT’s sister publication The POST, notifying residents of its intention to unleash periodic power supply interruptions from Wednesday, 6 December.

Alleged drug smuggler, Evy Ezeagbai, is out on bail. The Nigerian national was granted bail of R30 000 by the Modimolle Regional Court on Thursday, 9 November. The 49-year-old suspect was held in custody at the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Pretoria for allegedly being in posession of 4.6Kg of CAT in July. At the time SAPS Limpopo provincial spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, had disclosed that the Hawks, following up on a tip-off, stopped the suspect’s vehicle which was allegedly transporting drugs at Bela-Bela. The street value of the drugs was estimated at R1.3 million, Mojapelo had said. Meanwhile, the trial of alleged drug dealer, the Zimbabwean national, Daniel Maparangwa (28), continued with testimony from witnesses on Wednesday, 13 September. The charges brought against him are from

The DA-led city fathers ring in the changes Mzamane Ringane The Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Council chambers has had a re-arrangement of deckchairs with Chief Whip and businessman Dingaan Motshwene replacing outgoing Johan Abrie as the Speaker. DA Councillor Hercules Louw has taken over as the new Chief Whip. Motshwene and Louw were ushered into their new portfolios following a special council meeting on Friday, 17 November. Abrie has since resigned, citing alleged systemic threats against him, each time he raised issues relating to alleged corruption. The council meeting had also ringed in other changes, such as filling posts which remained vacant for a period of time. The new manager for corporate services is Henry Lubbe, with Kenneth Maluleke being appointed as manager for strategic planning and economic development. As part of the resolutions taken by the council, the municipality was to advertise for the vacant posts of municipal manager, chief financial officer, manager for technical services and manager for social services with immediate effect. DA provincial leader Jacques Smalle said the changes in the management team would strengthen the relationship between the political leadership and the municipality’s corporate and strategic management. “The decision to make new appointments was taken with the aim of continuing to accelerate quality services to the people of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality,” Smalle said. Meanwhile, financial woes and uncertainties regarding the Eskom blackouts scheduled for December remained a threat to the communities of Modimolle and Mookgophong. Mayor Marlene Van Staden pleaded with

members of the community to settle their outstanding accounts by midweek, to assist the municipality in paying an amount of R4,2 million which was due by close of business on Tuesday, 21 November. “If we pay this amount ESKOM will cancel
the interest for December and the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act process to disconnect the electricity will be called off,” Van Staden said. In a nutshell, the electricity supply agreement between Eskom and municipalities states that
the monthly account becomes due soon after the municipality has received the invoice. Should the municipality fail to settle the account within 30 days of receiving the invoice, Eskom may disconnect the electricity supply after issuing a 14 days’ written notice.

Mkhukhu toilets as homeless move into RDPs TK Mashaba The homeless have started taking occupation of incomplete RDP houses at Bela-Bela’s Extention 9, with the potential to trigger health hazards such as the mushrooming of pit toilets. Less than a week after Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni had symbolically handed over two of the housing units to two of the homeless, wheelbarrows and other modes of carrier transportantion have arrived on site. Acting mayoral spokesperson, David Raborolo, said the official position was that the rightful owners of the RDP houses were given keys in order to ocassionally keep an eye over the incomplete structures. An investigation by The BEAT established that several of the homeless – “rightful” or otherwise – were descending on the area to take occupation, against the backdrop of lack of sanitation, water and electricity. While many of the brick buildings looked

complete, it was clear that basic services such as water and electricity were not as yet available. A couple of corrugated-iron toilets, rising up in some of the yards, were testimony to a growing health hazard, if not a free-for-all of some sort. “Yes, some of the rightful owners were given keys to the houses, so as to keep an eye on what rightfully belonged to them,” Raborolo said. He said the latter process was aimed at preventing the illegal occupation of the houses by those not on the list of the particular 200 housing units. Last Tuesday, 14 October, Mayor Ngobeni symbolically handed over two of the RDP housing units to wheelchair-bound Abel Ngoma (74), and granny Raisibe Mbazo (55). The Bela-Bela Local Municipality has placed on record that the project at Extention 9 consisted of 700 units, with 500 yet to be built.

Kamplits Volleyball Club coach Thabo Molokomme. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba Bela-Bela volleyball players’ anticipated trip to Zimbabwe hangs in the balance. Tensions continued to rise in the embattled Southern African Development Community (SADC) member state, following a standoff between embattled President Robert Mugabe and his ruling Zanu-PF. Bela-Bela Kamplits Volleyball Club was scheduled to take part in a SADC regional tournament in the Zimbabwean capital of
Harare from 13 to 23 December. On Tuesday the club’s coach, Thabo Molokomme, said information at his disposal was that the African Federation of Volleyball was to consider relocating the tournament to either Botswana or Malawi. Speaking after a friendly tour of Swaziland by Kamplits Volleyball Club, he said the continental federation was expected to confirm the new venue by next week. He said preparations ahead of the tournament would continue never mind the change of venue, or otherwise.
Communities in the township at Bela-Bela continue to vent their frustration at the alleged dominance of outsiders over business and work opportuntinties. Scores of locals, as led by the fledgling Bela-Bela First collective, converged at the recreational park in Leseding, to engage companies which won certain tenders to work in the township. Bela-Bela First committee member, Pontsho Mashaba, told the gathering whenever there was a tender in the township, this was won by the same companies, often from outside of Bela-Bela. Other allegations levelled by the gathered members of the community, included their objection to the use of the ward system as a tool to employ people at job opportunities, flowing from the latter tenders. The community members said the system was allegedly designed
Mookgophong light aircraft tragedy Justin Steyn One of two people have died in a light aircraft crash outside of Mookgophong. According to Limpopo police spokesperson, LieutenantColonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the aircraft took off from the Mokopane Airport on the afternoon of Saturday, 18 November, and crashed into
dense mountainous territory in the vicinity of Blinkwater. “The police were called and (working) with the relevant roleplayers, a search and rescue operation ensued. The search and rescue team was unable to reach the accident scene due to its inaccessibility,” he said. Ngoepe further explained backup was sought from South African National Defence Force. He said the pilot, Nicholas
Daniels (37), was declared dead on the scene, while his 46-yearold passenger sustained serious injuries, and was flown to a private hospital in Johanesburg. The pilot has been identified as Nicholas Daniels, while the passenger remained unidentified. Both of the occupants were from Ekurhuleni in Gauteng. Police and aviation investigations continue.
to sneak in hand-picked individuals into jobs, thus disadvantaging those who needed to benefit from these opportunities. “This thing is (allegedly) promoted by some members of the council and must stop henceforth,” he said. Businesman Mike Sambo told members of the community he had no problem engaging the broader community on these issues.

Churches honour senior citizens
Senior citizens from different denominations during the prayer event. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela An interdenominational church movement held a special prayer day for senior citizens at Bela-Bela on Thursday, 9 November. The prayer event was held at the Pentecostal Church in the township. The women arrived from the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Lutheran Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church, Presbyterian Church, Uniting Reformed Church, Twelve Apostle Church and St. Moses Church. The collective meets monthly
to hold prayer services for various segments of the community. During the monthly gatherings, the hosting church would be granted the opportunity to distribute donations in terms of administrative challenges and assiting the needy. One of the church leaders, Theo Nzotho, said the reason for the recent gathering was to honour those elderly women who were no longer able to attend church services at their various denominations. Meanwhile, Bela-Bela Town Council Chief Whip, Henrietta “Die Bang” Ledwaba, provided the refreshments on offer.
Cultural group looking to impress Lizzy Bapela The Ngwago Cultural Group from BelaBela was convinced its performances at two popular game lodges could open up doors elsewhere. Co-founder Johannes Molekoa on Tuesday, 21 November, said the dance troupe was fairly well received during recent performances at Sambane Game Reserve in Mookgophong, and also at Kutaba Game Lodge in Modimolle. He said while exploring ways of breaking into the broader lodge market, the ultimate objective was to be enlisted as part of resident entertainers for one or two of the lodges. Molekoa said the hospitality industry across the Waterberg was perceived to have the potential to open up an abundance of opportunities for the cultural sector. The Ngwago Cultural Group traditional dance troupe was founded just over a year ago. The dance troupe comprises of 12 members, five of whom are girls and seven boys. The artists offer a repertoire of marimba, Zulu traditional dance and gumboot dance. Co-founders Molekoa and Peter Melomo are experinced dancers themselves.

Justin and TK do us proud
Andries van der Hyde (from left), Justin Steyn, Ronél van Jaarsveld and TK Mashaba. The BEAT team Reporters TK Mashaba and Justin Steyn attended a crème de la crème workshop facilitated by some of the best investigative journalism minds nationwide. The workshop, hosted by the Caxton Training Academy, was conducted in early November. The who’s who of the facillilators comprised of Jessica Puitchford, who has worked on Carte Blanche (M-Net), Special Assignment (SABC3) and Checkpoint (eNews). Dimi Raphoto has produced documentaries and also worked on Special Assignment as well as on Checkpoint. The other facillitator was Bernadette
Maguire, who has worked on Fair Deal, the Felicia Show and Carte Blanche, who is also a lecturer. “It was inspiring, and opened my eyes to new ways of doing things,” Mashaba said. Steyn’s observations were that the workshop was “informative and revealed some of the severe hurdles, which community journalists face whenever going the extra mile to pursue stories that are of an important but sensitive nature.” The BEAT twosome attended the workshop together with two reporters from our sister newspaper, Die Pos/The Post, namely Ronél van Jaarsveld and Andries van der Hyde. The worskshop was held at the Caxton Training Academy in Mulderdrift, outside Krugersdorp, Gauteng.

Champions Qualitho’s downward spiral Bela-Bela Pirates topples Boys 2 Men TK Mashaba

There were growing fears village wonderboys Rapotokwane Qualitho FC was on a downward spiral. Just after a lukewarm 1-all draw with Junior Stars FC, two weeks ago, Rapotokwane Qualitho FC has now slipped to eighth on the log standings. The downward spiral was the result of a 21defeat at the hands of Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust FC last Saturday, 18 November. The result sent the Waterberg SAB Region League (Stream A) reigning champions, the once mighty Rapotokwane Qualitho FC, from seventh to eighth position on the log standings. It was not, however, that Rapotokwane Qualitho FC was down and out, though. The team looked organized with the ball at their feet, stringing some impressive passes, but its main downfall was poor finishing, during the match against Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust FC. Rapotokwane Quialitho FC team manager, Reginald Mahlangu, again blamed complacency on the part of some of the players, adding the team continued to play good football.
Corporate sponsorship for schools
Some of the tournaments’ partcicpants. Photo supplied TK Mashaba Forever Reasorts at Bela-Bela was geared to plough back into the community by spopnsoring inter-school soccer and netball on an annual basis. The resort was the main sponsor of a once-off interschool tournament played over the early November weekend, played at Spa Park Primary School grounds. The difference this time around was that Forever Resorts marketing manager, Sam Rammutla, has unveiled plans to sponsor the games year in and year out. He said the sponsorship was to be in partnership with Old Mutual. The sponsorship for both soccer and netball would be in
the form of soccer and netball kits, medals and roving trophies. “We were really humbled by the passion showed by educators from various schools during the games in early November,” Rammutla explained.
The SAB Regional League action was billed to take a break Saturday, 9 December. Photo: Mzamane Ringane
Mzamane Ringane As the SAB League teams are set to go for a break on Saturday, 9 December, it has become apparent that the league will go down to the wire this season. Bela-Bela Pirates FC moved to the top after toppling Boys 2 Men FC from the summit of the standings. The Bela-Bela lads collected maximum points, after walloping Maxoma FC of Roedtan 6-1 on Saturday, 18 November. The Roedtan team was humiliated in front of its own home crowd in its own backyard. While Bela-Bela Pirates FC leads the pack, Maxoma FC is sitting at the bottom of the 12-team Waterberg SAB Regional League (Stream A) log standings. The Bela-Bela team will have to consolidate their top spot when they host Junior Stars FC of Mookgophong. In Roedtan this weekend, Maxoma FC will welcome Modimolle Home Defenders FC. Home Defenders FC will go into this match on a high, following a 1-0 home victory over Opleft FC. The struggling Opleft FC will host Bussel FC this coming weekend. The second-placed Boys 2 Men FC, will travel to Rapotokwane to do battle with the wounded Qualitho FC, the reigning league champions
from last season. Boys 2 Men FC played to 1-all draw with Modimolle Troublemakers FC, while Rapotokwane Qualitho FC are still licking their wounds following a 2-1 loss at the hands of third-placed Diesel N Dust FC. Modimolle Celtic FC, who suffered a 2-1 loss to Junior Stars FC, will host Diesel ‘n Dust FC at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium. All weekend matches were scheduled to be played on Saturday, 25 November.
