Furious residents of Mountain View (Spa Park), BelaBela, embarked on sporadic incidents of violence, to press home demands for, among other grievances, proper housing. The residents said the municipality had committed to build a total of 500 houses in recent months, and that nothing had happened. The residents said the municipality had now changed the figure to 250 houses, which were earmarked for construction. The township in Bela-Bela was also affected by protests in recent months, from which several people were arrested, as a direct result. At the time of going to press, some of the residents were engaged in a volatile stand-off with members of the of patrolling police personnel, travelling in eight bakkies and at least one armoured personnel career. Police investigators have reason to believe more suspects were involved during a downtown Bela-Bela gunfight in recent weeks. A charge sheet presented to the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court has pointed to the possibility of more suspects implicated in the alleged shootout, between two other suspects and an unidentified Bela Bela resident. Hilton Marks (37) and Mawanda Ngangaza (24), reportedly from Port Elizabeth, were arrested after an alleged gunfight between them and a Bela-Bela resident. According to the Bela-Bela police spokesperson, Sergeant Hester van Wyk, the shootout started near Laerskool
Warmbad when a man, who cannot be named out of fear of victimization, was confronted at his car by one of the men, and held him at gunpoint in his driveway. Van Zyl said Marks and Ngangaza demanded money from him. “He complied and the two fled and the armed suspect fired at his car as they ran off. The man took his own firearm and then gave chase into Ludorf Street. An exchange of gunfire went on between the two, but the man managed to give chase and apprehend the (armed) robber,” she told The BEAT Both suspects were arrested after cooperative work between the police and neighbourhood watch patrols. Marks and Ngangaza first appeared at the Bela-Bela Magistrates Court on Thursday, 20 July where the matter was postponed to Wednesday, 26 July, as investigations may lead to the arrest of other suspects.
Drama follows man shot by cops Justin Steyn
Justin Steyn The Hawks conducted an intelligencedriven operation on Thursday, 20 July, which led to the arrest of a 49-year-old man for allegedly dealing in drugs valued at R1,3-million. According to Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the arrest came after a tip- off. “Hawks members received a tip-off about a vehicle that was allegedly transporting drugs in the Bela-Bela area, and it was spotted and stopped for investigation. “The vehicle was searched and 4.6kg of Methcathinone (CAT) with an estimated
street value of R1.3 million was found,” Mojapelo said Evy Ezeagbai, reportedly a Nigerian national, appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrates Court on Friday, 21 July, and has been charged with the possession and dealing with illegal narcotics. His case was postponed to Wednesday, 2 August for further investigations. Meanwhile, the drug dealing case against Daniel Maparangwa has been postponed to Friday, 11 August. The 28-year-old Zimbabwean appeared in court recently. The charges brought against him are from several cases that took place between June and September last year. Maparangwa is on bail of R5000.
Ellusive suspects arrested
A police ballistic report was expected to shed further light on circumstances leading to the gunning down of Lesiba Malope of Bela-Bela township. In the aftermath of the shooting, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, said concerned members of the community summoned the police after a man acted suspiciously at a local store. When the police arrived, the man allegedly fled into nerarby bushes.
A search party was immediately set up, led by the police. When later the police confronted him, the suspect, armed with a panga, allegedly charged at one of the officers, who fired a warning shot. Still the suspect allegedly ignored the shot and continued to charge at the officer, who fired another shot, killing the man instantly. On Thursday, 20 July, Dlamini said Ipid was investigating, among others, an allegation by a family member that Malope was mentally-challenged, with the ballistic report also outstanding.
Assault suspects granted bail Kholofelo Monyela Two Bela-Bela men accused of alleged assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm have been granted bail of R500 each. The twosome was again expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 7 August. The case is a sequel to an alleged roadside robbery, whereby the accused have alleged to have been forced to defend themselves against a man who had
allegedly acted violently. The man accused of the alleged attempted robbery ended up in Bela-Bela Hospital, following the alleged altercation with the two men. The injured man has since been transferred to a hospital in Polokwane. The alleged incident occurred on Friday, 7 July, at the township’s Zuma View. Sergeant Frans Sekgobela of the BelaBela police had earlier told The BEAT the two men reported that a passer-by allegedly attempted to rob them, as they were chatting on the sidewalk.

The men were traced to this house in Phagameng. Photo supplied Ronél van Jaarsveld Round-the-clock detective work has culminated in the arrest of four farmworkers who allegedly broke into a farmhouse in Tom Burke near Lephalale. The four accused were tracked down to Phagameng in Modimolle. Provincial police spokesman, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, told The BEAT the break-ins coccured in July, at the farm Speculatie, while the owner was not at home. Mojapelo said that police managed to
recover an allegedly stolen Isuzu bakkie, during the initial stages of investigations. Four plasma TV sets were also recovered. Mojapelo said the alleged houserobbers allegedly used grinders to open a safe, from which an undisclosed amount of cash, US dollars, and firearms were stolen. “Police recieved a statement where four men, between the ages of 20 and 50, were traced to a house in Phagameng. We also recovered weapons in their possession at the time of the arrest.” Mojapelo said. The four are expected to appear in court at Tom Burke in due course.
An alleged fugitive from the law was traced to Bela-Bela township by investigators from Gauteng, but later died from gunshot wounds. In a true-to-life drama, police said the alleged suspect, Peter Baloyi (27), was tracked down through cellphone coordinates by a task team from Temba Police Station, outside Hammanskraal. The alleged suspect was wanted in connection with murder, business robbery, rape and kidnapping. The Temba police tracked down Baloyi to an informal settelement in Bela-Bela township, whereby he alegerdly attempted to make a run for it. Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, said members of the task team attempted to stop the fleeing suspect by opening fiure, wounding Baloyi as a result. The wounded man was then rushed to Bela-Bela Hospital, where he died. According to Dlamini, Baloyi was reportedly shot by two of the police officers. “It is alleged that on Monday, 17 July, police officers from (the) SAPS Temba
task team were following a suspect through cellphone coordinates. “They managed to trace him to the Bela Bela policing area, and he was found at an informal settlement in the township,” Dlamini told The BEAT. He said when the police arrived, Baloyi allegedly attempted to flee, and that police opened fire. “The suspect saw them and ran away. Two of the police officers fired shots towards the suspect and he was injured. The suspect was taken to Bela Bela Provincial hospital where he later passed away,” Dlamini explained. He said Baloyi had allegedly been on the run since January. “The suspect was wanted for housebreaking with the intent to steal, and common theft. He was also wanted for business robbery, rape, kidnapping and murder. All these cases are from Hammanskraal,” Dlamini said. On Tuesday, 18 July, family members positively identified Baloyi’s body at the government morgue. Dlamini said that investigations into this case were ongoing. “A post mortem will be condcuted to identify the cause of death and our investigations are still continuing,” he added.

Education department in damage control Lizzy Bapela Education authorities in Limpopo have embarked on a damage control exercise, in response to sustained pressure from all fronts. Departmental spin doctor, Dr Naledzani Rasila, said the education department in Limpopo was in the process to provide the 2018 Learner and Teacher Support Material (LTSM) to 3818 schools, by the end of 2017. The syllabus for the phasing-in technical subjects for Grade 10 and 12, he said, was confirmed and the required materials were being ordered.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga. Photo: Lizzy Bapela All five districts have fully functional warehouses to store materials closer to the schools. Rasila said a service agreement
had been signed with textbook publishers, and the ordering process has started and was expected to be finalised by the end of the month. It was expected schools would be able to reach 95% in the implementation of the text books’ retrieval strategy. Rasila said a total of 398 SMMEs with a collective personnel of 10 000 individuals, continued to provide services to schools. Thus far 1222 schools, including two in Modimolle, had established kitchens. Running water was provided to 254 schools. He said the department planned to advertise for 739 posts for subject advisors.

Ndebele murals light up Masemola Street
Mzamane Ringane Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has urged members of the community in the Waterberg to get screened for tuberculosis (TB), in a new drive to reduce new infections. Motsoaledi used the recent official opening of the Ramadimetja Sophia Mogotlane Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre in Mookgophong, to drive home his message. The Minister said the Waterberg was among the six regions in South Africa, which were hit hard by the scourge of TB. The Waterberg was, according to Motsoaledi, the third most affected nationwide, with Sekhukhune not far behind at number six. He encouraged Waterberg residents to ask for a TB screening whenever they visit their local health clinic. “In 2014, TB has overtaken HIV/ AIDS to become the number one killer of all infectious diseases in South Africa, and throughout the whole world,” he said. Motsoaledi said the biggest killer was now TB, but further indicated that the battle against this contagious

Residents of Bela-Bela township’s Masemola Street woke up to a multi-coloured thatch- hut decorated with a tapestry of Ndebele artwork on Saturday, 22 July. The rondavel has its own rich history, because once upon a time this was the office for yesteryear businessman-cumacademic, the late Reuben Motsisi. Motsisi’s nephew, the presentday businessman and impresario, Selby Moima, thought it befitting to hire a local paint-brush artist to give the rondavel a makeover, in
memory of his maternal grandfather. The man with the brush and paint responsible for the colourful makeover is local artist, Thomas Morulane. “Believe me, I have worked on various murals, but this is the first time that I experimented with the complicated Ndebele artwork,” he said. Morulane said he hoped his “first” work on Ndebele murals had the potential to attract other customers in the township and beyond. Research done elsewhere suggest Ndebele mural art patterns have a particular meaning among the tribespeople.

He was received with ululations and whistling from senior citizens when he announced the sponsorship. Ngobeni was speaking on the side-lines of the Golden Games played at Letlhabile Recreation Park, featuring soccer, rugbyball throw and indigenous games, among other activities. The games were facilitated by the provincial department of social development. Ngobeni said the sponsorship was aimed at covering the players’ travel and refreshments. The best players were to be selected to represent the Bela-Bela cluster at inter-regional selections to decide on players to comprise a Waterberg team. The Waterberg
team was billed to compete at the provincial level at a yet to be decided date. The games are part of broader initiatives to keep senior citizens fit, and therefore control conditions such as hypertension and sugar diabetes.
