Forbidden fruit A carpet of oranges was all that was left of the cargo. Photo: supplied
And how sweet they taste TK Mashaba A truckload of oranges overturned on the outskirts of Bela-Bela township on Sunday, 25 June, spilling its mouth-watering cargo all over the place. Onlookers – many of them children playing in the street – perceived the carpet of oranges as
an opportunity to collect much-needed Vitamin C, against the backdrop of the chilly winter months, characterised by the flu virus. Although circumstances leading to the accident were sketchy, eyewitnesses told The BEAT the truck was roaring its way along the R516 from the direction of the local graveyard headed for the N1, when suddenly a minibus taxi turned into the road.
The truck driver acted swiftly, swerving to avoid what could have been a tragedy. The truck driver apparently lost control, with the heavy duty sixteen-wheeler careering off and overturning on the roadside a stone’s throw from the southern fringes of the township. On hearing the massive crash and seeing the rising cloud of dust, curious residents raced
towards the scene of the accident, helping themselves to the huge supplies of the mostly damaged citrus bounty. By Sunday afternoon everybody else was talking about how sweet the fruit tasted. Traffic officials said the driver was treated for minor injuries on the scene by emergency services personnel, while the taxi driver was nowhere to be found.

No SMS for court appearances Andries van der Heyde These messages have been sent via SMS. Since the contents appear serious and urgent, people tend to open the link, which leads to a suspicious website.
Suspicious texts informing individuals that they have to appear in court, have been making the rounds lately. The message states that the individual should appear at the High Court on a certain date; in order to view details of the case, the person is urged to open an included link. The link, which can only be opened on a smartphone, leads the individual to a website asking for personal information. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla of the
Bela-Bela police has asked that people ignore these messages. “The court will never send an SMS asking people to appear in court,” he said. “When a case must be taken before the courts and an individual needs to appear, whether as witness or accused, the police will personally present the individual with a summons to appear at the specific time and place.” Phetla also reminded the community that personal information should not be given out on suspicious websites, and asked the community to report these suspicious messages.

Phetla appeared in The BEAT several times with regards to awards he received for his outstanding work. He has had many breakthroughs, challenges and highlights. Police manhunt continues over ModiMall robbery Lizzy Bapela The police in Modimolle confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with a case of robbery at ModiMall on the morning of Tuesday, 20 June. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay said five men entered the MTN shop at the mall and held up two staff members at gunpoint. Findlay added that the suspects forced the complainants to the back room of the shop, where cellphones are kept. The suspects allegedly managed to steal only one cellphone from the safe. A third staff member entered the shop, and he was also forced into the back room. “Immediately after joining his colleagues, the third victim tried to push the shop’s panic button. One of the suspects saw him and thought that he did press the panic button. The suspects then fled the scene,” he said. According to the information received, the suspects fled in a getaway vehicle, a BMW 3 Series. Police said that they stole a cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash. The police urge

Business robbery suspects still on the run Lizzy Bapela Suspects who were involved in a case of business robbery involving two security guards deployed at the old Commando building in Modimolle are still on the run. Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer James
Findlay said that the incident took place on Saturday, 17 June. According to information received, four suspects entered the building on the day in question and pounced on the two security guards on duty. One of the guards told the police that he was inside the security room next to the gate, when he suddenly saw an unknown man trying
to open the door. He added that the suspect then broke the door’s glass panel, after failing to force it open. He was immediately joined by his three other accomplices. The suspects took the guards to the main building, using a bolt cutter to gain entrance. The complainants told the police that the suspects tied them up
with shoelaces and left them there. Findlay said the suspects fled following the arrival of a senior municipal official. He said the suspects helped themselves to an undisclosed amount of cash, and the workers’ two cellphones, valued at R5 000. The police are investigating a case of business robbery.

Your own piece of paradise for R5 Justin Steyn How about owning a piece of the picturesque and even prime property Bela-Bela farmland for a mere R5? Well, according to residents of Extension Nine, an informal settlement in Bela-Bela, they allegedly paid R5 to own a stand earmarked for RDP housing. Lucas Phala of the fledgling Bela-Bela Business Agency and Community Organization, alleged that community members have been misled, if not defrauded, by a sitting councillor. He said residents were approached by someone they trusted, who impressed on them a piece of land had been earmarked for RDP housing. The homeless were required to pay an amount of R5, in order to be entitled to an envisaged RDP housing development. Phala disclosed residents were still reeling with collective shock, after a visit by the municipality’s local housing department, with officials allegedly overlooking the R5 investors in terms of the formal RDP registration process. “Residents were overlooked during the registration process in early June. We demand that residents who paid the R5 be reimbursed, as the so-called proof of payment is invalid and illegal. The community also needs to be consulted on all matters regarding their wellbeing,” he said. According to Josias Ramalekana of the area’s concerned residents’ group, the settlement’s landscape still reflects a society with major inequalities. “The community feels left out and

APA Paramedics attended to a crash between Modimolle and Bela-Bela. Photos supplied Justin Steyn Gemsbok and other wild animals flipped their ears with apparent astonishment after a vehicle skidded and rolled off an embankment, landing against the parameter fencing of a game farm. Medical rescue units rushed to the scene on the R101 between Bela-Bela and Modimolle. According to the Waterberg Advanced Paramedic Assistance (APA) group’s spokesperson, Andy Gill, the accident happened on Friday, 23 June, after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. “Late last night APA’s were called to the
R101 between Bela-Bela and Modimolle for a vehicle that lost control and rolled,” Gill said. On arrival the car was found off the road against the fence, he said. “Three occupants were found inside the car. They were injured and sustained minor to serious injuries,” Gill said. He added that the three patients were transported by APA and Provincial Services to a hospital in the area for treatment. “One of the patients was later transferred to a hospital in Johannesburg for further treatment. The cause of the accident has not as yet been determined, but we suspect the driver lost control, approaching a sharp bend where the car was discovered,” he added.
Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni presided over a seminar targeting youth economic empowerment and road safety. The event was held in partnership with the Department of Roads and Transport at the Bela-Bela Multipurpose Centre on Thursday, 22 June. The theme of the event was “Year of OR Tambo advancing Youth Economic Empowerment”. Youths from different community-based structures and small business attended the event, including those interested in starting their own businesses. The mayor said the aim of the event was to expose the youth to opportunities available in the work and business sector. Present at the event were officials and managers from the local and district municipalities and government departments. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Waterberg Development
Agency (WDA), Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), iCollege, Avuxeni Computer Centre and Indungu Institute also attended. Speakers made presentations on topics such as, among others, doing business with the municipality and government departments. The Department of Roads and Transport also enlightened the attendees on road safety awareness. Attending youths stressed that the government should foster participation of young and emerging entrepreneurs in their events and empowering small businesses. They also urged their leaders to ensure that when empowering small business owners, they should start locally. Some attending youths said that they were disappointed because they assumed they will get funding and assets for businesses and jobs at the seminar. However, many still expressed gratitude towards their leaders for hosting such an event, adding the event was an eyeopener.

Mzamane Ringane Members of the Modimolle-based Addicted to Life Athletics Club, who recently returned from the Comrades Marathon in Durban, were honoured by the local religious community on Sunday, 25 June. The Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) Fountain of Life organised a walk where the athletes, joined by kids from the church, embarked on a procession from the local taxi rank to the AFM place of worship, for a special prayer service. The event was characterized by prayers, hymns and broader celebration in recognition of these local heroes and heroines. The athletes were embraced by the congregation as local heroes, and were encouraged to keep up the sterling work. Pastor Kemaketse Keagile of the AFM came up with a pleasant surprise when he declared he was training in preparation for his first participation at the Comrades next year. Pastor Keagile recently joined the athletics club, mentored by seasoned runners, coach
Ezekiel Moatshe, and captain, Lucas Seleka. “I will be participating in the Comrades Marathon next year. The purpose is not to win, but should the opportunity arise, I am going to give it my best,” he said, drawing rapturous applause from his congregation. The clergyman urged the athletes to celebrate the little things they achieve in life. Pastor Keagile also took the opportunity to encourage members of the congregation to get involved in physical activity, such as running and walking, which he said will contribute to their wellbeing. Moatshe urged church members to invest in their physical and mental health. “If we start investing in our health now, we are going to lead better lives,” Moatshe said. Ntsako Maswanganyi of Addicted to Life athletics club also reiterated that it was important to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Maswanganyi urged members of the community, including the elderly, to exercise regularly. She said exercising regularly helps to keep the mind and body healthy at all times.

Lizzy Bapela Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha showcased his ambitious Limpopo Development Plan (LDP) in downtown Bela-Bela, which he said had the potential to kick-start new jobs especially for the youth. Speaking at the Premier’s Employment Growth Advisory Council (PEGAC) Summit at Forever Resorts on Thursday, 22 June, he said council members had the responsibility to make the document work. The theme of the summit was “Together We Move South Africa Forward”. This was the first bi-annual meeting for the current year.
In an interview on the side-lines of the summit, Limpopo government spokesperson, Phuti Seloba, said the role of PEGAC was to explore strategic partnerships with stakeholders such as business and labour, with the ultimate objective to improve the lives of ordinary people. He said the council met twice a year, to hammer out strategies and find solutions to the high levels of unemployment. Other stakeholders include institutions of higher learning, private economists, civil society and the print and electronic media. Youth unemployment, he said, was of particular concern to the premier. Mathabatha personally chairs the PEGAC, with members drawn from various experts from across the board. The LDP was the strategic nerve centre of all deliberations. In his address the Premier said the LDP remained the official blueprint, nudging the province on a higher economic growth trajectory. “As the council, we must find ways to breathe life into this important document called the LDP. We must make sure the aspirations contained in the LDP materialise. If we succeed in doing this, we would have succeeded with the mandate of this Advisory Council. I am saying this because the successful implementation of the LDP will lead to a higher growth trajectory, economic development, job creation and the reduction of inequality. This is what our battle cry is about,” Mathabatha said.

in the initiative, said the programme taught her to be more independent and a stronger person. “I am sure that if we, as South African youth stand up, we can make a difference,” she said. The NARYSEC programme is aimed at young adults aged 18 to 25, who have completed matric. It was established in September 2010 after the Department of Military Veterans partnered with the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform. The main goal is to develop rural youth in order to prepare them to perform community service in their own neighbourhoods.

He said Devco was in talks with the SAPS to be part of the broader solution to the problem. “If we don’t do something about it now, while we still can, then there is no hope for the future of our children and community, we’re all in this together,” he added The march will commence at 9:00 from Moloto Street (Line 1) and will proceed to the health clinic in Extension Six, for a mini rally.

Bela-Bela’s black business community attended a general membership meeting that was held on 22 June, where a couple of issues were trashed out. A total of 28 businesspeople from both the formal and informal sector attended, with the purpose to speak in one voice. Among issues discussed was the adoption of the constitution, in terms of which membership affiliation will be capped at R100, and over and above a R50 monthly contribution. The structure’s secretary, Gabriel Kutumela, said this was agreed upon as a means to fund the day-to-day running of the grouping. Membership is open to any large or small business, operating within the boundaries of the Bela-Bela Local Municipality. Members also resolved to arrange
