30 October. The team walked away with a crucial three points when they hosted the newly promoted Mokopane Ratanang FC at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium. After the team failed to utilise many opportunities in the first half, hope was eventually restored after Sepeke Manamela finally scored an all-important goal in the 36th minute of the match. In the fifth minute of extra time just before the end of the match, the player (Manamela) who scored the only goal of the match was given marching orders after receiving a second yellow card. During the previous seven matches, the Modimolle team struggled to secure maximum points until last Sunday when they emerged victorious at home against Ratanang FC.

Burglar bail application postponed Justin Steyn The bail application for alleged burglar Seun Maluleke has been postponed to Thursday, 3 November. Maluleke was arrested on Thursday 20 October after being pursued by local authorities for allegedly attempting to steal a compressor from Swanepoel street resident Amanda Ferreira. “I woke up and shouted at my dogs for barking constantly, little did I know that there was a man who tried to steal from our house,” she said. Ferreira said that she didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation until a housemate, Shaun Dearall, informed her that a man was attempting to climb over their wall with a compressor that belonged to them.

Seun Maluleke was arrested for allegedly being involved in a burglary in Bela-Bela. He has said to have been harbouring his stolen goods in an empty house. Photo supplied Upon being notified of the situation Bela-Bela Crime Support founder (BBCS), Elri Arlow, said

that members of the BBCS and Galven chased after the man as he fled on foot to an empty house. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla of the Bela-Bela police said that Maluleke was using the empty house to harbour goods he had allegedly stolen in the neighbourhood. The stolen goods varied from clothing, valuables to household goods. According Arlow, this is not the first time Maluleke has been arrested for burglary as he was allegedly shot in his left leg by police officers after attempting to escape from the scene of a crime. Meanwhile Lieutenant-Colonel Phetla said that Maluleke had taken police to the various residencies to return the items he had stolen. Phetla said that a few hardware items and a bicycle remain unclaimed.

Trauma after giving birth in bathroom Nyaope is a serious drug that is affecting the youth. Photo supplied TK Mashaba Bela-Bela is being reported at a drug hotspot in Limpopo, the worst such in the province. These statistics were revealed by the Limpopo SAPS ahead of the drug and substance abuse indaba to be held at Sunfa Stadium on Saturday, 5 November. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla from the Bela-Bela Police said that the community needs to intervene to combat drug related challenges. “We need the people involved or affected to tell us about the

dealers,” he said. “We are making arrests, but the problem continues.” He urged the community to help the police in combating drugs, as the youth is also being affected. “We are doing everything we can, but it would be better if we could arrest the kingpins,” he said. In related news, a 45-year-old man from Zuma View was expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court soon after allegedly being found in possession of 20 sachets of nyaope with an estimated street value of R8 000.

Man arrested after shoot-out

Residents in and around Spa Park outside of Bela-Bela awoke to a gunfight when police tended to a burglary incident in the area. Photo supplied Justin Steyn The police in Bela-Bela have arrested one suspect and are still following leads on two other men who allegedly committed a house robbery in the early hours of Wednesday, 26 October at Spa Park in Bela-Bela. According to provincial police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe, the three men attacked and burgled an in house tuck shop while its owner was sleeping inside the premises. “It is alleged that the Spaza shop owner was sleeping when three suspects, one armed with a pistol and the other with a knife, attacked him,” Ngoepe said. He added that the man’s neighbours phoned the local police and upon their arrival a firefight ensued during the course of which one of the suspected men was shot in the

leg and arrested. The other two men involved managed to escape. Ngoepe said that the man is from Mamelodi which is situated outside Pretoria in Gauteng. He was admitted to the Bela-Bela hospital where he is recovering from his leg injury. Ngoepe said that a knife used in the commission of the crime was found in possession of the suspect along with a sum of R65 550 in cash. “He will appear before the BelaBela Magistrate Court as soon as he is discharged from hospital on charges of possession of a dangerous weapon and suspected stolen goods.” At the time of going to press, Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla of the Bela-Bela police could not provide the name of the suspect as he had not made an appearance in court as yet.

Lizzy Bapela A woman who gave birth in a hospital bathroom in August says she is still traumatised and has nightmares about the ordeal, which has also affected her baby’s health. The 32-year-old Shelly Selomane from Sekuruwe Village in Mokopane said that the treatment she received has left her disappointed. Selomane went for a normal check-up at the clinic and her condition resulted in her referral to the hospital, where nurses were warned that she was an emergency case that needed to be closely monitored. She said that the nurses were inattentive and rude to her and another patient had to assist her after she accidentally delivered her baby in the bathroom, by herself. She added that the nurses later arrived and shouted at her, forcing her to carry her baby back to bed without help, where she was left soaked in blood. She also said that a cleaner was scared to give her a glass of water since she was not a medical professional, but changed

her linen and gave her pads for the bleeding. “The nurses called me names, saying that my make-up and clothes showed that I am a slut. They also gossiped about an earlier patient, also calling her names. They questioned me about everything and were never helpful. I notified the clinic about the matter after I got discharged. I never wanted to take the matter further but just to ask the nurses why they were so rude and heartless towards me, but the hospital never afforded me the opportunity to meet with them. I still suffer a lot emotionally and my baby sometimes bleeds from his nose,” said the heartbroken and traumatised patient. The Limpopo Provincial Health Department is expected to investigate the alleged negligence case as Selomane submitted a written complaint to the hospital last month, outlining the events that led her to give birth in the hospital’s bathroom after the nurses allegedly ignored her birth pains. The hospital’s CEO allegedly ignored the complaint and never contacted the complainant.

Departmental spokesperson Derrick Kganyago told The BEAT on Tuesday, 1 November, that he had not yet heard of the incident at the time of enquiry and promised to investigate and give a detailed and informed response. Meanwhile, the DA in Limpopo announced following the incident that they will write to Limpopo Health MEC, Doctor Phophi Ramathuba, to request an urgent investigation into the matter. The party said that they were in possession of the letter alleged to have been brought to the hospital’s CEO’s attention. “The DA strongly condemns the unacceptable treatment. It is unfortunate that the hospital’s CEO did nothing to address this matter. Our people go to public health facilities to be treated with dignity and respect. The MEC must intervene and urgently investigate this matter. If no steps are taken, I will escalate the matter to the Health Ombudsman,” said the DA Limpopo spokesperson on Health, Langa Bodlani. The baby is two months old now and is slowly progressing.

Zani Hiepner Sunet De Villiers (11), a learner of Vaalwater Primary School was caught completely off guard when a snake sailed across her foot and was about to wrap itself around her leg. The incident happened on Tuesday, 25 October, in the parking lot of the primary school just as Sunet was approaching her mother’s car. She thought quickly and immediately

Photo supplied Lizzy Bapela Two people died in an accident on the N1 northbound, 3 km from the Kranskop tollgate. Modimolle police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay said that the accident took place in the early hours of Sunday, 30 October. According to information received, one of the vehicles was following close behind the other. The vehicle in front was carrying two people, while the rear vehicle had only

one occupant. The rear driver apparently lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the vehicle in front before swerving into oncoming traffic. The front vehicle caught fire first, shortly followed by the rear vehicle. Both vehicles were badly damaged in the fire. Two people were killed and the sole survivor, who was driving one of the vehicles, has been arrested on charges of culpable homicide. The names of the deceased have not yet been released.

DA insists on KPMG report Andries van der Heyde The long-awaited forensic report which is said to contain the findings of an investigation into Bela-Bela’s Municipal Manager Morris Maluleka, is still a secret. In an attempt to hasten the delivery of the report, which has been delayed for months – the DA recently wrote to Parliament about the situation. Desiree van der Walt, LP and election head of the Waterberg District, said that she had written to Des van Rooyen, Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and Andries Nel, his deputy. She said that the DA is prepared to exert the necessary pressure and even resort to a PAIA request to ensure that the report is made public during an open council

meeting of the Bela-Bela Municipality, since the report was paid for with public money. “As soon as the matter receives the necessary attention, the DA will ensure that the necessary steps are taken,” she said. The contents of the report were allegedly already available before the August election, but at every open council meeting residents were informed that the report would only be delivered later. Maluleka was placed on special leave pending the outcome of the forensic investigation, but returned to work in May. Precious Raputsoa, the Head of Planning and Development, said that the report had already been sent away for further legal advice, and promised that the report would be made public as soon as that process is complete.

flicked the snake off her leg and into the air and possibly saved herself from what could have been a tragic affair. “The snake appeared to be black, but I am not sure what it could have been, but a snake stays a snake,” said Adri de Villiers, Sunet’s mother, who stood merely a few meters away when it all happened. Fortunately the young girl escaped unharmed, as she kept calm and immediately reacted. “Mommy, Jesus held me in his arms,” Sunet later told her mother.

Mzamane Ringane Modimolle Primary School educator Daphney Matshidiso Thoka who recently won an award of Excellence in Primary School teaching at the Waterberg District level, continued to obtain third place at the provincial leg of the awards where she was representing the Waterberg District. The provincial National Teaching Awards (NTA) ceremony was held on Thursday, 13 October at Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane. The 17th annual NTA served to recognize excellence in the teaching profession across South Africa. Thoka said she was delighted to be selected as part of the top three educators in the whole province. She said although she will not be advancing to the national level, it is not the end of the journey as she will begin to prepare herself for next year’s competition. “This achievement will help me to remain focused and determined. It also encourages me to put more efforts and achieve both my needs and those of my learners. As I am also involved in several programmes like among others, Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert and ISPA Super Teachers, I am gaining a lot of information that benefit myself, the learners, educators,

school management and the community at large,” she said. Thoka recently attended EduWeek conference and the Digital Education Show in Africa conference, which she hopes will also contribute positively towards her teaching career. “I would like to thank the Grade 1 educators who were looking after my learners when I was attending all these programmes. My coordinator Doctor Maluleke and Principal Raisibe Ramaloko supported me financially to make sure that the teacher development issue is addressed. They also encouraged me to keep up the work and uplift the name of our school. I would not have done it if it was not for the support of my family and my friend Mokhudu Machaba who is my mentor in these programmes,” she continued. Thoka also took the opportunity and thanked God for the blessings, which helped her remain positive in her journey. In conclusion, the Modimolle educator encouraged fellow educators to be involved in programmes that will benefit their schools and the broader community. She said it is important for educators to be computer literate because ICT (Information and Communications Technology) is here to stay and it is an important part of the current education system.

Former Miss Modimolle Mokgadi Modiba has claimed another title, by winning the Miss High Schools 2016 title. The pageant which was initially planned to accommodate both the girls and boys had to be trimmed to only Miss High Schools after lack of participation from male participants. The event was held at the Peter Nchabeleng Community Hall in Phagameng on Saturday, 22 October. Modiba, who won the crown in the inaugural competition said that she was grateful towards the organisers of the pageants for giving her a chance. “I am very grateful for the title, and Miss High Schools. My main focus will be on making a difference in our schools. The biggest thing that I would like my fellow learners to achieve is better marks in class. I thank the

organisers for the opportunity,” she said. Malebo Sephelle who was selected as the first admitted that the competition was tough, and further alluded that there were many contestants who deserved to win. “Every contestant was a winner. At the end of the day, three winners had to be chosen and I won the second place. It was amazing to be crowned first princess of Miss High Schools. The competition was a great opportunity for me to strengthen my confidence. It was ecstatic and l loved every moment of it,” she said. Ntombizethu Cele took the second princess title. Pageant organiser Edward Bro Sox Masingi said he was happy with the way things went, although they were minor challenges. Masingi highlighted that they learned a lot from this year’s pageant, since it was their first.

Deputy President to grace the Waterberg Lizzy Bapela The country’s Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will grace the Waterberg District, accompanied by political and government leaders at the national and provincial level, including the Office of the Premier. Ramaphosa will officially hand over a state of the art crèche in Mookgophong called the Ramadimetja Sophia Mogotlane Early Childhood Development Centre on Friday, 4 November. Limpopo Provincial Government Spokesperson Phuti Seloba said that the centre will play a crucial part of a child’s development and quality training in ensuring that a child is confident and ready for school. He added that ECD has proven that they perform better than their peers whom are not attending ECD in their communities. Seloba further said that investing in Early Childhood Development recognizes that the protection and development of children not only safe guards their own well-being but is also the best guarantee of future peace, security and prosperity for the community at large.

“The objectives of the Early Childhood Development are to provide children with an opportunity to develop in the areas of numeracy and literacy through play and creative activities, improve the health and wellbeing of children through access to adequate nutrition and health services, and to ensure that children are given ageappropriate computer skills development. ECD also aims to produce children that are school ready and meet the normative development milestones of being able to read, write and count,” added Seloba. The construction of the centre is complete now, which follows a sod-turning ceremony conducted by Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini over a year ago. She was accompanied by management at the local municipality, the provincial department and her entourage at the national level. Speaking to The BEAT about the developments on the building of the centre a while ago, spokesperson for the local municipality Naphtally Tlhoaela said that the municipality and the provincial Department of Social Development had not yet set a date for the official opening. He added that they were still waiting for the construction and some logistics to be

The Early Childhood Development Running Festival was hosted by the local athletics club in partnership with other stakeholders, and sponsored by companies who contributed to the success of the event. Rethabile crèche, Mpulemahlo Day Care, Little Stars crèche, Lerato Day Care, Mahlatse Day Care, Pheladi Day Care, Marie Day Care, Emmanuel Christian crèche, Tshwaranang crèche, Agape crèche, Phagameng crèche and Kopanong crèche took part in the festival. The Modimolle victim support centre also sent their children to participate in the festival. All participants were awarded medals at the end of the day. Educators from various crèches also competed in a 100m sprint, before the day was wrapped with aerobic activities performed by members of Addicted to Life. The two years old boys and girls participated in a 30m race, while the three year olds competed in a 45m race. The three and four year olds participated in the 60m and 90m races respectively. Ntsako Maswanganyi of Addicted to Life said that the aim of this festival was to help the children with their fine and gross motor skills development. “The other reason is to motivate them to be interested in athletics as early as possible, so that when they grow we do not have to convince them to exercise and live a healthy life. They should get interested now, so that they grow up knowing that this is the right thing to do in order to stay fit and healthy,” she said.

Maswanganyi advised that crèches should incorporate these activities into their daily programmes at their respective crèches, to ensure that the children remain active. Addicted to Life athletics club coach Ezekiel Moatshe thanked all the stakeholders, sponsors for making this event possible. Moatshe said that it was important to implant sports activism in children while they are still young, so that they can grow up to become better people. “Nyaope and other type of drugs are consuming our kids, but if we show them the right path at a young age, we can be able to help the society to win this battle,” Moatshe said. The manager of AVBOB Modimolle/Bela Bela/Mookgophong Ren Pallas called on other companies to be involved in these kind of programmes in their communities. “I am just a little bit worried because we still need to have more companies getting involved in these community programmes, because it is not about your company but it is about your own community and children,” she said.
