Murder victim laid to rest TK Mashaba & Lizzy Bapela Nkele Sedie, a Bela-Bela resident who was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, was laid to rest on Saturday, 29 April. Mourners, including her family, neighbours, and colleagues from the Community Works Programme gathered at Sedie’s home in Extension 5 to pay their respects.
Sedie’s boyfriend, Silence Mulaudzi (32) was arrested for the murder. It is alleged that Mulaudzi stabbed her several times and slit her throat. He is believed to have surrendered himself to the police not long after the incident, which took place on Saturday, 22 April. A bloodstained jacked and knife were found at the scene of the murder, and the deceased’s body was discovered inside Mulaudzi’s home.
Mulaudzi appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 25 April, and was expected to appear this week for a formal bail application. He is being charged with murder. Mulaudzi is also facing charges of malicious damage to property. It is alleged that he badly damaged the car of a police officer, said to be Sedie’s lover, shortly before Sedie was killed. The cases have been combined and will be tried
together. Sources close to the victim said Sedie and Mulaudzi had been in a relationship that ended badly, with a history of violence, and that Sedie had had a protection order against Mulaudzi. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla from the Bela-Bela police could not confirm the cause of the incident, but said investigations were continuing.

To catch a thief Justin Steyn The Bela-Bela Crime Support (BBCS) group says they have had their hands full as far as incidents of theft are concerned. According to BBCS chairperson Elri Arlow, the incidents have become more and more prevalent and the group has started to investigate the increasing incidents by engaging with their members and surveying in which areas missing items were reported. “We see more and more occasions where small items are reported missing from households in the town. This has been going on for the past few weeks but has now become almost a daily occurrence. One of our patrols has

Strategic meeting may decide court’s relocation Justin Steyn The Bela-Bela Magistrates Court’s manager, Sherley Phalatse, said a strategic meeting needs to take place before a concrete decision can be made to relocate the court for renovation purposes. Plans to remodel the court building have been on the discussion table since September last year, with only cases from the regional court being moved to
the magistrates’ court in Modimolle. At the time, Phalatse said that the court plans to temporarily relocate to the town’s police station. According to a reliable source, the renovations are planned to last as long as 18 months. In an update, Phalatse confirmed on Tuesday, 2 May, that the renovations are still on the table but this will be discussed during a strategic meeting during the week. “I can only confirm that the renovations are taking place. The court is going to have a strategic planning meeting this week and I

may have more information by Monday next week,” Phalatse said in a telephonic interview with The BEAT. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla of the Bela-Bela police has also confirmed that the police station is still the first choice for relocating the court as soon as renovations have started. “The contract between us and the Department of Justice has not been terminated and to my knowledge we are still going to house the courts when renovations start,” Phetla said.

Lizzy Bapela A team of Bela-Bela Detectives conducted a thorough investigation after a laptop and some other items were reported stolen and recovered the stolen property. This was an incident of 21 March, which has been under investigation ever since its occurrence. The detectives’ commander LieutenantColonel Abel Phetla said they received information on the whereabouts of the stolen items and the suspect, a tip-off that they responded swiftly to. He added that on Tuesday, 25 April, the police traced the suspect and found him in possession of the suspected stolen items belonging to the complainant. These include the laptop, charger, cord and assorted books. On arrest, the suspect, 28-year-old Pontsho Gert Mahlokweng was charged with common robbery and detained. He made his first court appearance before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 26 April. * A young man from Bela-Bela was allegedly caught selling drugs in Zuma

Phetla told The BEAT that the police could not tell at the time whether the suspect is dealing or working for anyone. He added that the suspect was charged with possession of drugs and appeared in court on Wednesday, 26 April. * Two suspects from Modimolle are expected to appear before the local magistrate’s court shortly in connection with a case of theft. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay said the suspects, Piet Phiri, aged 26, and Doctor Sekgaolelo, aged 32, were arrested after allegedly being caught cutting the fence on the R101 direction Mookgophong. He added that the local municipality put up the fence just over month ago. According to the information received, the Crime Prevention Unit was doing patrols on the road when Constable Kwena Ngoepe saw two suspects cutting the fence next to the road. The police said the value of the fence was estimated at R5 000.
Five people had to be hospitalized after they were involved in a car accident outside of Bela-Bela. The spokesperson for the Waterberg Advanced Paramedics Assistance (APA) group, Andy Gill, spoke about the accident in which there were no fatalities. “APA was dispatched to an accident on the R101 near Radium. On arrival we found that two cars had been involved in the accident. There were a total of eight people in the vehicles.
Arlow said. She added that the stolen items are usually small items that residents won’t notice have gone missing at first glance. “Small things like little pots, small appliances, toys and globes among other things are often reported stolen. The person responsible probably enters a premises and just takes small things and leaves as soon as he can.” Arlow said the acts are widespread but two areas have been identified where the offenses occur most often. “We receive reports from many areas but Stoffberg Street and Mentz Avenue have the most reported cases to date. I don’t think this man is dangerous as we suspect he is only stealing to have food, but we urge the community not to confront this man as people tend to resort to violence when they are desperate,” she warned.
Three farm attack suspects nabbed Ronél van Jaarsveld Three men were taken into custody early on Monday morning in connection with a farm attack that took place on Wednesday, 26 April. The victims of the attack were an elderly couple in the Villa Nora area outside Lephalale. According to Sakkie Louwrens of the Heritage Protection group, the three Zimbabwean men cannot be directly connected with the crime as yet, but the investigation continues. Four unknown men attacked the couple, respectively 73 and 58 years old, and demanded cash and weapons. The couple were restrained, but the man was able to get free and fatally shot one of the criminals in the chest. The 20-year-old man’s body was found the next morning a few metres from the scene, while the other three attackers fled. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Lieutenant-colonel William Ramokhubedu at 082 499 8389. Five people were stabilized and transported to a local hospital by both APA and Provincial Ambulance Services with minor to moderate injuries,” Gill said. He said that the cause of the accident is not known.

Residents to choose new name for LIM368 Ronél van Jaarsveld Residents of the combined Modimolle/ Mookgophong Municipality, currently known as LIM368, can look forward to a more creative name in the near future. The municipality reminded residents again this week that the closing date for name suggestions is Friday, 5 May. Although some residents were of the opinion that the name change is a waste of
money, others got creative with suggestions like Sonderwater (Without Water, in Afrikaans), RoeMoMoAlRanVaalMelk (Roedtan, Modimolle, Mookgophong, Alma, Rankinspas, Vaalwater, and Melkrivier) and Modiphong. ThabaMetsi, Nylsvlei, Kranskop, and Nyl Municipality were also suggested. “The national government regulations specify that the municipality’s name be chosen and approved by the city council,”

Union halts interviews Ronél van Jaarsveld The interviews for a pair of vital municipal positions which were to have taken place on Friday, 28 April, were cancelled when the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) insisted. The interviews, which were for the position of managers in Corporate Services and Town Planning, were to have taken place on the day, but the union refused to allow the interviews to continue until the municipality delivered a reply to their memorandum. The memorandum was handed over to the LIM368 mayor, Marlene van Staden, on Thursday, 6 April. “It was never a condition that we were to discuss the reply to the memorandum with them,” Van Staden said. “We sent them a reply.” She went on to say that it was vital to fill these positions as soon as possible. One of the union’s demands that placements for current personal should take place before the hiring of new managers. After the merger between Modimolle and Mookgophong, several positions had two or more people employed across the two municipalities. Before placements can be made in the available positions, Van Staden said that competency tests had to be done in order to employ the best candidate. “We are being delayed by the district and the province,” Van Staden said. “They were supposed to send personnel to help with the process, but that never took place, and we are going to ask for help in other metro’s and municipalities so that we can lay people’s fears and uncertainties regarding their positions to rest.” The municipality will be meeting with Samwu on Thursday, 4 May in order to attempt to find a solution.
indicated that they will not be limited to that only. Makgetha said the organisation will take care of the costs, until such time that they receive donations from the business sector. He said they are looking into the idea of convincing local business to each contribute 1GB per month, to ensure that this initiative succeeds. “We want to encourage young people to take advantage of this programme, especially those who cannot afford to take their last cent and purchase data bundles to apply for a job or complete an assignment,” he said. Organisation Hands On has always been on the ground, hosting various types of workshops in and around Modimolle to empower young people.
“We believe that this programme will also help to improve the pass rate in our local schools at the end of the year,” Makgetha told The BEAT. The organisation has also announced the much anticipated Drug-Free Colour Run which is scheduled to take place in September. The colour run will go in line with the organisation’s initiative named The Truth about Drugs, which aims to find a unique way of pushing young people away from drugs. Limpopo ANC disappointed by rally disruptors Mzamane Ringane The ANC in Limpopo has voiced their disappointment with the behaviour of workers who prevented the Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte from addressing the attendants at a workers rally. The ANC’s DSG was expected to speak to the workers at the May Day Rally in Polokwane on Monday, 1 May. “The ANC in Limpopo is disappointed that the behaviour of some of the workers attending the May Day rally in Polokwane prevented the Deputy Secretary General of the ANC Jessie Duarte from addressing the rally. As the leadership of the ANC in the province, we were not notified by COSATU or any of its affiliates that the ANC leadership was not welcome to participate in the celebrations,” he said. The main Workers’ Day rally in Bloemfontein was also disrupted, with President Jacob Zuma being prevented from addressing workers at the rally. COSATU eventually cancelled all the speeches and the national rally could not continue. The ANC in Limpopo said in a statement that rallies and marches represent a painful past for workers struggles internationally, and the relentless struggles waged by generations of workers has today given rise to the recognition of workers’ rights, including freedom of speech and freedom of association. “Furthermore, May Day celebrations represent future hope that workers will defeat exploitative tendencies of monopoly capital,” the statement continued. The ANC also took the opportunity to respond to the statement made by the ANC Youth League in the province. Schools Democracy Week ends Lizzy Bapela The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) once again partnered to host the 5th annual Schools Democracy Week. This programme is the commission’s key outreach initiative, meant to educate young people about electoral democracy and all the commission’s six offices across the Waterberg District took part in the programme. IEC spokesperson in Waterberg Malome Nkoana confirmed that the programme rolled out in selected public schools throughout the country from Monday, 24 to Friday, 28 April. He emphasized that this happened in the week when South Africa celebrates Freedom Day and 23 years of democracy. The first Schools Democracy Week was initiated in 2013 following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the Electoral Commission and the DBE in order to address the challenges of

Nkoana further said the collaboration between the Electoral Commission and the DBE is also intended to support the drive to increase youth registration, as well as to educate youth, in particular first-time voters on voter registration and voting. He added that the long-term objective is to entrench active participation as a fundamental civic responsibility, and to institutionalise and infuse electoral democracy content into the formal school curriculum at all levels. “Staff from the Electoral Commission in all nine provinces visited participating schools and led activities including debates, presentations, mock elections, role plays, voter registration, interactive sessions, lectures and formal lessons. Over 2 000 schools participated in this
He further stated that the fact that the Deputy President of the ANC, who is a known game farmer in his personal capacity, has taken an initiative to assist the empowerment of the community of HaMatsila through their Development Trust to enter this industry must be applauded. Contrary to the country’s number one, the deputy president was given a warm welcome in Mpumalanga when he arrived to deliver his May Day rally speech to the workers.
year’s Schools Democracy Week. At BelaBela, two schools were visited, with 661 learners reached but unfortunately no learner was registered as a potential voter. The Vaalwater, Modimolle and Mookgophong area saw a total of 408 learners reached from 11 schools and only nine potential voters were registered. Thabazimbi saw a huge number of 805 learners reached from the five schools visited and only eight potential voters registered. Meanwhile in Mogalakwena, 552 learners were reached from the nine schools visited and no potential voter was registered. Lephalale saw 534 learners being reached from the two schools visited and they registered the largest number of potential voters sitting at 54. “The provincial launch took place in Phalaborwa and after a provincial launch has taken place, all the district and local municipalities then host their own programmes. Our provincial electoral officer, Nkaro Mateta attended the provincial launch and our district and local electoral officers attended at their levels,” said Nkoana.

KnitWits of Shambala gathering around the Madiba statue with their knitted blankets. Zani Hiepner The initiative 67 Blankets hosted a family “hook-up” day on Sunday, 23 April, where KnitWits across the country spread their blankets around the various statues of Nelson Mandela in a colourful reminder of Tata Madiba’s legacy, according to a press release from the initiative. At Vaalwater the Shambala Game Reserve team joined in on the initiative and spread their blankets around the statue on the reserve. “As we start feeling the touch of winter’s hand, and political tremors leave a chill on our hearts, it is warming to know that the “KnitWits for Madiba” is getting ready to spread love and comfort,” the 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative stated. Throughout the year people from all walks of life, including prisoners and school goers pour care and compassion into the knitting of their blankets for the cause, and are said to be “stitching the country together, one stitch at a time”. ‘67 Blankets’ has grown into an international movement, with KnitWits in many countries donating blankets in honour of Madiba.
Founded three years ago, by business woman Carolyn Steyn in response to Zelda la Grange’s challenge to knit 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day the NPO has grown from 67 blankets to 670 blankets, to a world record breaking 27 000 blankets all donated to those in need, according to a press release. In 2015 India made a bid for the title and claimed the Guinness World Record for the “Largest crochet blanket in the world”, but in 2016 South Africa claimed back the title with a blanket measuring over 17 000 square meters. “67 Blankets has changed my life, and the lives of many. What I have learned over the past three years is the importance of alliance, partnership, friendship and relationships embodying trust, respect, kindness and common purpose. Together we have achieved great things” Steyn said in the press release. Steyn added that everyone should make a blanket for someone less fortunate then themselves. “We are listening to him with every stitch we make,” said Steyn. According to the press release the movement is binding the nation together through bright, colourful thread.

Happy Boys FC has played a total of 18 matches, winning 11, drawing three and losing four of them. The oncoming match between the two teams will have a serious impact on the outcomes of the league as it is nearing an end. At the top of the standings Qualitho FC is sitting with 42 points, and has only match left to play.
Out of the 19 matches that the Rapotokwane team has played, they managed to win 13, drawing 3 and losing 3. It will be crucial for both Boys 2 Men FC and NTK Happy Boys to collect maximum points during this weekend’s match. It is however apparent that only one team is able to walk away with the three points or the two teams can settle for a point each if the match in a draw. If Boys 2 Men FC can go all the way to win their three remaining matches they will win the stream A of the league, regardless of the outcomes of the contending teams.
