WELCOME NOTE | Barry McGuire | We are excited to invite you to the Annual Scien

c Mee ng of

the Di cult Airway Society (DAS) UK, to be held virtually on 4th and 5th November 2021. The highlights include case based discussions, pro-con debates on controversial topics, keynote speeches and an innova on session along with many other popular sessions. Renowned speakers from across the globe will be joining us to deliver a high quality, interac ve educa onal experience. There will be two parallel streams with lot of contents to choose from. As the recorded event can be accessed by the registered delegates for four months a er the event, you will not miss any important sessions. Authors of selected abstracts will be invited to present at the oral presenta on and innova on sessions. Selected case presenta ons will be included in our expert panel discussions on both days. While we will be missing the warm experience of a face-to- face mee ng and networking this year, the virtual pla orm o ers many advantages like widening the access to a global audience and much reduced expense for the delegates. And you can watch the high quality discussions from the comfort of your home or at work at a me that suits you. We look forward to welcoming you to two days of fun lled, educa onal and informa ve sessions keeping up with the tradi ons of the DAS annual mee ngs

THE ONLINE PLATFORM Access from the comfort of your own home

DAS ASM 2021 will be hosted online. This online conference incorporates both live elements and the op on to access the full programme at your convenience ‘On Demand’ using an online pla orm. In addi on to the many scheduled sessions, you can network with other DAS a endees, explore the Poster Gallery and see and hear latest updates from Industry partners. How it works In advance of the conference commencing, you will receive access to the online conference pla orm to customise your pro le and start building your schedule. All sessions, ac vi es and networking will take place in the online pla orm. All you need to join is a computer, internet access and an up-to-date web browser. The pla orm will remain open un l 4th March 2022, enabling you to log in at any me to re-watch recordings and access resources, as well as retrieve any notes, messages and contact informa on you collected during the conference. Enjoy live sessions A endees will be able to join live keynote, panel and expert sessions and these live streamed sessions give you the opportunity to engage with presenters and delegates via the live Q&A func on during each presenta on. If you miss a presenta on, you will have the op on to watch it on demand a er the conference and un l 4th March 2022. Explore the Poster Gallery Open 24 hours a day, you can enjoy browsing through the Poster Gallery at any me that suits you. Want to learn more about a presenta on, you can view a video made by the Poster author and send the presenter a message about their poster. Connect with your community Make contact with old and new colleagues via the online A endee hub. You will be able to search for other par cipants a ending DAS 2021 and use the chat func on, and schedule video/voice mee ngs within the pla orm.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS SUBMISSION PROCESS The abstract submission process for DAS 2021 will be through an online submission portal. Presen ng Authors are requested to create an account and submit an abstract for review according to the guidelines set out below. The same account will be used when you register for the mee ng. Please keep the email and password used to create the account for future use. Please do not create a new account. Should you require any assistance or have a query about online submission, contact DAS2021@conferencepartners.com. IMPORTANT •

It is ESSENTIAL that you read the instruc ons before you submit.

The Presen ng Author must submit the abstract and is required to be the corresponding author for that abstract

Abstracts must be submi ed in English

The language of the conference is English and all abstracts should be submi ed in English. Abstract submissions are welcome from non-english speaking authors. Some assistance with the linguis c requirements may be available if an early dra of the abstract (in English) is submi ed to DAS2021@conferencepartners.com before 1st August 2021. This assistance will not a ect the judging process which is carried out a er the submission deadline.

PREVIOUSLY PRESENTED OR SUBMITTED ABSTRACTS Abstracts should not have been previously presented (orally or in poster format) at another interna onal conference. Similarly, previously published work should not be submi ed. Abstracts that have only previously been presented locally will be considered. If the authors are in a ny d o u b t re ga rd i n g t h e e l i g i b i l i t y o f t h e i r a b st ra c t , t h ey s h o u l d co nta c t DAS2021@conferencepartners.com prior to the closing submission date for clari ca on along with details of where their work was previously presented. PRESENTATION TYPE An abstract can be submi ed for presenta on at the mee ng as one of the following categories:

The best abstracts will be invited to present their work in one of the oral sessions scheduled in the main conference programme. Poster presenta on sessions will take place throughout the conference. All submissions will be reviewed on merit and allocated to a poster or oral session accordingly. Authors may choose to only have their work reviewed for a poster session. Abstract presenters are reminded that programme mes may be subject to change and they should be available throughout the conference. Given the number of submissions, it is unlikely that speci c day/ me requests can be considered. Similarly, it will not be possible to provide individual feedback on abstract scoring or judging decisions which will be nal.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Please adhere to the following forma ng guidelines when preparing abstracts for submission for DAS 2021. Abstracts which are not correctly forma ed will not be reviewed.

HOW TO SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT The Presen ng Author will be the contact person for the abstract and must submit the abstract. Once you enter the online submission portal, start by crea ng an account. Please keep a record of the account details you use to set up the account as you will require them to log into both the DAS 2021 abstract submission system and registra on portals. Upon successful submission of the abstract a con rma on email will be sent to the Presen ng Author. If you have not received a con rma on email, please check that your abstract is not le in dra and is fully submi ed by logging back into the portal and checking on the View/Edit Abstracts page.

IMPORTANT Please note that you can save your submission as a dra and return to edit the submission, but once it has been submi ed the abstract cannot be edited a er the close of submission deadline. If you require any assistance regarding the submission of your abstract, contact DAS2021@conferencepartners.com.

It is the responsibility of the submi ng author to communicate with the other authors of their abstract. SALG In an agreement with the Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group (SALG) appropriate abstracts may be accepted for presenta on at the SALG mee ng on Friday 26th November 2021. This is an agreement for this year only and will not in uence opportuni es of acceptance, presenta on or publica on following DAS 2021, Adherence to the standards for DAS 2021 will meet the standards required for SALG 2021. Authors will be contacted a er the submission deadline where appropriate.

ETHICS The Di cult Airway Society takes the issue of consent very seriously, and in cases where there is doubt are likely to default to exclusion. All submissions will be required to con rm that they meet the ethical standards presented below. Any authors with ques ons should contact DAS2021@conferencepartners.com at the earliest opportunity

All submissions are expected to comply with the ethical standards of the BJA. (This s pula on applies to ALL SUBMITTED ABSTRACTS). CLICK HERE TO GO TO ABSTRACT SUBMISSION PORTAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS The abstract submi ed adheres to the abstract submission guidelines on the DAS 2021 website. The abstract submi ed is in English. This abstract has only been submi ed once for DAS 2021. It is the responsibility of the Presen ng Author to submit the abstract. They are the main contact whose responsibility it is to communicate with other co-authors. The Presen ng Author is available to present virtually at the mee ng between  4 – 5 November 2021. The Presen ng Author must register and pay in full by the deadline indicated in the acceptance email. If they do not register and pay in full, the abstract will be removed from the programme and any associated publica ons. The Presen ng Author has obtained permission from all authors to submit the abstract to DAS 2021. The submi ng author understands and con rms that their abstract (including but not limited to text, author names and any associated posters etc) may be included within the conference app, website, and/or pla orm and that this will not raise any copyright issues. All grammar/content has been checked and the submi er acknowledges that the abstract if published on the pla orm, website and/or app it will appear as submi ed. Any abstract accepted for publica on in the BJA may be edited at the discre on of the journal. A submission as a par cular Presenta on Type may be changed to a di erent category following review. Presenters may be recorded for live streaming. A recording of the presenta on may be published online a er the conference. Submi ers of accepted abstracts will be expected to comply with the requirements of the video-pla orm. Video recordings may be made available for a period of me a er the conference on the online pla orm to registered conference delegates only.

PRIZES | John Smith Award for Innovation | Ralph Vaughan Cup | Prizes in various categories will be awarded including the inaugural John Smith Award for Innova on and the Ralph Vaughan Cup which will be awarded to the best oral presenta on by a UK/Ireland trainee and the inaugural John Smith Award at the discre on of the abstract judges.

John Smith Award for Innova on Dr John Smith graduated from Liverpool University in 1969 and was appointed as a consultant at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham in 1982. He is regarded as a pioneer in the use of

breop c

laryngoscopes and he developed one of the rst breop c training courses in the UK. He has authored several ar cles on di cult airway management in peer reviewed journals. Di cult Airway Society is delighted that his family have suggested that his contribu ons to di cult airway management is remembered and recognised through an annual ‘John Smith Award.’ The best presenta on in the innova on session will get the award this year. An author can select to have their abstract considered for the John Smith Award for Innova on at DAS 2021 by selec ng the ‘Innova on’ theme during submission. Whilst not an exhaus ve guide, the following would qualify an abstract to be considered for the innova on prize: •

A novel nding in the lab/clinical applica on (not previously published)

A novel device or monitor or a novel use of an established device (not yet commercially available) A novel clinical service or team training method/approach

Ralph Vaughan Cup For the best oral presenta on by a UK/ Irish Trainee who is a DAS member. Ralph Stephens Vaughan was appointed consultant in Cardi in 1973. He was the Honorary Secretary to the Junior Anaesthe sts Group from 1969-72 and then the Honorary Secretary of the Associa on of Anaesthe sts from 1992-94. He has also served as the Vice President of both the Associa on of Anaesthe sts and the Royal College of Anaesthe sts. During his

me on RCoA Council, he held several key roles including as the

Chairman of the Examina ons Commi ee. His research mainly revolved around Airway Management and he was also the founding Chairman of DAS.
