TREND

ALERT!

Here’s the low down on some key trends to watch out for this winter

MONO-MAN

Monochrome tones were dominating the catwalks for winter 2010. Just like colours get bright and breezy in the summer months, the seasons dictate our colour schemes for winter too. Keep your blacks, whites and greys in bold, sharp styles.Take a leaf out of Hugo Boss’s book and go for classic tailoring to carry off this mature trend. p

PAUL SMITH 59199 £175

JUNK DE LUXE 59872 £90

LEFT, LEFT, LEFT RIGHT LEFT!

Fancy yourself in a pair of khakis but can’t handle the early mornings in the army?! Winter 10’s military trend is sure to quench your thirst for adventure. Details like box pockets, regimental double breasted buttons, high collars and muted colours like green and dark grey build up all of the essentials to this trend, just like this Paul Smith coat. p

RELIGION 59514 £35 RALPH LAUREN POLO 59806 £115

PICK’N’MIX

Imagine your styling rules go out of the window, and this is what you come up with. Layer upon layer of mis-matched colours, textures, prints and shapes create a glorious mash up of an outfit. Clashing is the key, so get to it! p

THE HE-SHE

Androgyny trends are usually associated with stick-thin models who clomp around in brogues and baggy shirts. All that has changed this season with the re-invention of the blouse! This one by People’s Market has just enough feminine detail like the pretty purple print, to balance the masculine neckline and buttons.Alternatively, raid your boyfriend’s wardrobe for a really authentic look! q

LIPSY 59018 £65

ARE YOU FUR REAL!?

Miaow! (Faux) Fur features dominated catwalks for winter 2010, so much so that we felt like the passengers on Noah’s Ark had just arrived! They come in coats, trims, collars, boots and more. We especially love this gilet by Lipsy, for its leather waist cinching belt. Easy tiger! p

REFRESH THE FIFTIES

PEOPLES MARKET 59824 £70

Marilyn Monroe chic

The fifties were all about feminine shapes and styles.Think buxom ladies with tiny waists and bustling skirts. You don’t have to go the whole hog with this trend to get the desired effect though. High waisted skirts, animal prints, hip hugging dresses and even a touch of polka dot all make for Marilyn Monroe chic! u

An Adidas bomber jacket all seems above board. Take a closer look…isn’t that a Storm Trooper?! Yep, finally Storm Troopers are being recognised as fashion icons. Just be careful not to take this a step to far and go for Jabba the Hutt chic! q

SOMETHING DIFFERENT DESIGNER WASH BAGS

So, you spend hours each day tweaking your hair, you dress your neck up with a tie or scarf, wrap your feet up in quirky socks…but what about your long neglected wrist? It’s time to give it some TLC with a Toy Watch.Their colours are bright, their ideas are big, and you won’t be late for the bus with this little beauty by your side! t

THINGS Y O U NEVER KNEW YOU

Thinking outside the box is a risky business when it comes to what to wear, and it’s all too easy to flick past pieces that you might not usually go for.We hold your hand and take you through some daring choices to make you stand out, and that will make you wonder how you ever managed without them!

UGG £95 59552

UGG EVOLUTION

Uggs make a change season by season and this Winter they have come up with a Lexi boot, which looks more than a little like our Grandma’s slippers! Take a leaf out of her book and rock these unusual shoes with some Werther’s Originals on hand!p

G-STAR £175 59847

PAUL SMITH £59 59209

THIS IS THE KEY

Paul Smith's range of accessories are irresistibly frivolous. Just one look at this cute-as-a-button "Paul x" keyring throws me into a dilemma...do I really need a new (designer, no less!) keyring? One look at the cuddly cow on my car keys at the moment tells me...yes!p

protect from the elements PUFFER JACKETS ARE BACK

HUNTER £135 58890

HARD AS NAILS WELLIES

Remember playing hide and seek in the playground and always getting found because of your beloved puffer? Times have changed, and you will want people to find you in this bold G-Star number. p

Jumping in puddles and kicking fallen leaves just got edgy! Punky buckles and alligator effect turns the noble wellington into a boot with attitude!p

Here are some stand out pieces that we can’t resist at Diffusion!

Oh G-STAR! We don’t know how you do it, but there is a reason that you are a firm favourite at Diffusion and this outstanding jacket is a perfect example. This blazer is somewhere between a tweed and a check, plus it has burgundy and blue running through the design, a thoughtful touch. If you like this look then check out our old Hollywood style inspired photoshoot on page 40 for more! p

£155 59068

UNIVERSAL WORKS cords have a thick rib for a traditional look, but are slightly baggy too and have a low crotch. All in all, this is a seriously cool pair of trousers that might earn you some extra respect from Granddad. p

smooth operator

ANDERSON'S belts come in a smorgasbord of colours and designs. You can brighten up any outfit with their multicoloured belts, as they combine the yachting look with a touch of something a little more daringly edgy. Plus you can get fatter than the turkeys at Christmas because these belts do not have fixed holes and they can go as big as you like – absolutely perfect! u

Liam Gallagher’s label PRETTY GREEN is known for it’s cocky laddish attitude, perfect for any front-man. The evening scarves started out polka dot and block colour, but now they are available in either purple of grey paisley and we think that Liam as hit the mother load! Wrap these up into a cravat or drape them around your neck for a laid-back cool. p

We can't get enough of the range of t-shirts that DIESEL produces season after season. This winter they have wowed us with a range of logo tees that shout out loud! From the attitude of“I don’t mind if you forget me”to the dainty“Sorry I’m here”, Diesel has subliminal messaging down to a tee! q

LAVENHAM jackets are new to Diffusion this year, but they are here for the long haul.A range of beautiful colours with a hint of metallic, a corduroy trim and perfect quilted diamonds make for a modern classic that we adore. p

UGG delivers another winner with high heeled Uggs! You’re allowed to be sceptical here – aren’t Uggs supposed to be indulgent comfort rather than bunion inducing heels?! Don’t worry, they still have your best interest at heart – these boots are lined with signature sheepskin so that you can barely feel the heel, and they are super flattering! Still sceptical? It’s time to convert. p

TOP THREE BOY'S

TOYS W

hilst Lego and Top Trumps would have once sufficed, we now prefer a bit more wizardry out of the box, with the latest gadgets and gizmos providing just that. Check out our favourites for this Christmas:

C H R I S T MtopA 3S 1. Apple iPad

COTE ET CIEL 58444 £140

2. 3D TV

To keep your shiny new ipad shiny and new, add this CoteEtCiel laptop rucksack to the top of your Christmas list!

At number two is a technology that is currently being hammered by all the big television makers out there and that is of course, 3D TV. Whilst you wouldn’t ever say you needed this in your life, no one could deny the slight sense of excitement over watching sports and films in glorious 3D. With videogame makers also turning to this tech, hook one of these bad boys up to a PS3 and slot in one of the first 3D games, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and I think you’ve got enough to send you over the edge!

At number one is a product that has probably been at the top of every guy's list since the height of summer and that’s the Apple iPad. Never has a product had so little purpose in someone’s life yet still managed to capture the lust of every gadget geek out there. I want one, and if you haven’t already got one I’m sure you do to. Even Santa himself will be making his lists on its notepad function, navigating the globe using its GPS maps and blasting out a few tunes out of it’s inbuilt iPod whilst doing his rounds this year.

If you need a nudge of encouragement to get into the festive spirit, read our 3 top tips for getting in the mood:

IN THE

MOOD

Coming in at number three for the top tech toys is the Sony Playstation 3. Having previously resided in the shadows of Microsoft’s X-Box 360 it’s since shot into the forefront. An ever growing list of exclusive titles, blu-ray compatibility, superior graphics and most importantly, further price reductions, have all teamed up to create a button basher's dream.

T

he Frankfurt Market (better known as the German Market) is a firm feature on the streets of most cities around the country. It is the perfect opportunity to fill your boots – there’s Bratwurst stalls, Gingerbread, German Beer and more other Germanic indulgences that you can shake a stick at. Throw on your lederhosen and get involved! Make Mulled Wine. The zest of one lemon, six cloves, a sliced orange, sugar cubes, a cinnamon stick and a bottle of red all mixed up in a saucepan is your tasty doorway to instant Christmas spirit in a cup. Watch The Muppets Christmas Carol. This is the one and only, ultimate Christmas movie. P/58

3. Sony Playstation 3

From beginning to end those muppets keep us entertained with slapstick and catchy songs (we especially love it when the cabbages sing in the opening number). If even Ebeneezer Scrooge can appreciate Christmas spirit by the end of this corker, then so can you!

F L A M B O YA N T C L O T H I N G This locally based brand is just starting off, yet already turning heads and getting chins wagging. We get inside the mind of the man behind the brand… What’s your name and where do you come from? My name is Samuel Langley-Swain. I’m originally from Wales but have been lucky enough to be an honorary ‘Midlander’ for the past 5 years. Tell us about Flamboyant clothing… Flamboyant Clothing is an up and coming label for fashion forward boys and girls who are not afraid to wear what they like and rock their own look and style. We also want to promote self confidence in young people.

What/who is your biggest inspiration? I’m really inspired by people who have influenced fashion by standing out, celebrating their individual style in their own unique way, starting the latest trends rather than following them. People like Lady Gaga, Bjork, Boy George, and Grace Jones.

For more on Flamboyant, see www.flamboyantclothing.com, follow @flamboyantsam on Twitter, join The Flamboyant Army on Facebook, or email sam@flamboyantclothing.com

Who do you want to be wearing your clothes? I want all types of people to wear my clothes and feel confident and special whether they’re at a party, on holiday or even buying a frozen chicken at the supermarket.

WHERE TO

S

B E AT !

o winter is about to set in and the countdown to Christmas and NYE is on! Fear not though this is when the nightlife scene truly hots up. I’ll be giving you the inside track of where you should be heading out and what tunes you should be listening out for this season. Being at the heart of the country and its second city we should expect a lot from Birmingham’s nightlife and if you look hard enough it has something for everyone. For you’re underground vibes fix head to Face at the Cellar Door within the Rainbow Complex. For big name DJ’s such as Guetta, Afrojack and Paul Van Dyk then Gatecrasher on Broad Street is the only place you’ll find these. Plus, the after party scene in Birmingham is now bigger than ever with the invention of Rock n Rolla. Add to the mix IF u Want it at the sumptuous Bushwackers then you’re spoilt for choice for late night antics. Whether it’s early doors or into the early hours you can always find frivolity at Deansgate Locks in Manchester. Sakura is the newest bar on the locks providing big name DJ’s in a truely stunning setting. Still the purveyors of flamboyance and making campness cool are Garlands in Liverpool and they never fail to put on a show week after week!

Acts such as Booka Shade (LIVE), DJ Yoda and Kissy Sell Out are booked in before the end of the year then add to the mix full on Dance Anthems Each and Every Saturday night, Digital Nightclub is a main stay and at the heart of Newcastle clubbing culture. If you’re after somewhere spectacular to bring in the New Year then look no further than, The Secret Party Project presents Cirque de Stanford. Set in the visually stunning Stanford Hall in Loughborough, no expense is spared in putting together a show stopping production and DJ line up. On the tuneage front you better believe that disco is back with a vengeance to end the year! Look out for European Artists Alex Kenji; David Jones, Ivan Pica and Manuel De La Mare who are putting a modern twist on the never tiring genre and are responsible for it being back on top of the download charts.

N U S W I N G Dtop I S C5O 1. Ivan Pica, Freak (Original) 2. Will Gold, Swing Time (David Jones Remix) 3. Crazibiza, Everybody (Tommy Teque Remix) 4. Audio Junkies, Let's Make a Party (Manuel de la Mare & Alex Kenji Remix)

My Production duo of Garrett & Ojelay is flying the flag for the UK and you can listen/download our tracks and mixes for free at www.soundcloud.com/wordofmouth
