American’s who were around in 1945 for the Victory in Europe (V-E) Day and Victory in Japan (V-J) Day will never forget the pure joy, exhilaration and relief that swept across the country. Millions turned out in the streets for two of the most memorable demonstrations in history. As time passes, the days have lost emotional punch, but this being the 65th anniversary of the victories in Europe and the Pacific, many people and organizations are pausing to remember. THE LAST LOG CABIN PRESIDENT 8 AMERICAN PATRIOT
Abraham Lincoln was the most famous populist President born in a log cabin, but James Garfield claims the honor as the last. During his brief Presidency — he was assassinated one year into his term — Garfield was noted for fighting political corruption and for renewing the prestige of the office after it had fallen into disrepute after the Civil War. Born in 1831 in Cuyahoga County OH, Garfield was fatherless at two, drove canal boat teams, earned enough money for an education at Williams College and, in 1856, returned to Hiram College in Ohio as a classics professor. Garfield was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1859 as a Republican. During the secession crisis, he advocated forcing the seceding states back into the Union. In 1862, he successfully led a brigade at Middle Creek KY against Confederate troops. At 31, Garfield became a Brigadier General, two years later a Major General of volunteers.
As President, Garfield’s most famous fight was strengthened Federal authority over the New York Customs House, the principle
During the war, Garfield was elected to Congress and became a favorite of Abraham Lincoln. He was re-elected for 18 years and became a Congressional leader. At the 1880 Republican Convention, Garfield supported his friend John Sherman for the nomination, but with the Convention deadlocked, they turned to Garfield as a compromise. In one of the tightest national elections ever, Garfield prevailed over
port of entry for goods in the U.S. He took on Senator Roscoe Conkling and the patronage wielding local politicians, and after a very nasty public battle, had a complete victory. In July 1881, he was shot by an angry attorney turned down for a consular post. Garfield lingered until September, and then died of internal bleeding and infection. Vice President Chester Arthur became President.

STEWART UDALL ENVIRONMENTAL HERO

When he died last March, Stewart Udall was one of the most important figures in the environmental movement that you never heard of. During his decades of public service, the Arizonan’s most important legacy was in championing the idea that government should preserve vast areas of land. He oversaw the addition of nearly 2.5 million acres to National Parks and pushed for Landmark environmental legislation. The son of Levi Stewart Udall, he was educated at the University of Arizona and he saw combat as a gunner in the Army Air Corps in Italy during World War 11. He graduated from the University’s Law School in 1948, and began his own law practice soon after. In the 1950s, Udall entered politics and was elected in 1954 to Congress. John F. Kennedy appointed him U.S. Secretary of the Interior in 1961 because, as a Congressman, Udall had been a strong supporter of environmental and civil rights legislation.
If that were not enough, he also worked to expand the National Park Service to include four new national parks, six national monuments, eight seashores and lakeshores, nine recreation areas, 20 historic sites and 56 wildlife refuges. Among them: the North Cascades National Park, Redwood National Park, the Canyonlands National Park, and the Appalachian Trail.

Let’s face it. Most of us, even if we haven’t lost a job or seen our retirement savings shrink, have taken a hard look at how we spend our money. That is smart thinking. Many people have cut back on things they really enjoy like vacations, recreation, entertainment, and dining out. Golfers play fewer rounds, massage enthusiasts don’t spend quite as much time at the spa, fans are catching fewer games. That smarts! You can still enjoy vacationing at a resort, playing golf at great courses, spending a day at the spa, dining out, and other activities you love without busting your new budget. How? By spending smarter
