ON 9/11 FIRST LADIES HONOR

UNITED FLIGHT 93 4 AMERICAN PATRIOT

This week, much of the country will be focused on the site of the World Trade Center to memorialize 9/11, and understandably so. But the First Ladies — Michelle Obama and Laura Bush — are traveling together to a remote spot in Western Pennsylvania to participate in a ceremony honoring those who died on United Flight 93.

ARE YOU GUYS READY? LET’S ROLL! The 40 victims who died on the flight are remembered for their heroic decision to battle the terrorists who had hijacked the plane and had planned to crash it into either the Capitol or White House. Originally scheduled to go from Newark NJ to San Francisco, passengers of the hijacked plane learned the news of the coordinated attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and acted to regain control of the flight from the hijackers. In the process, the plane crashed in a field at Shanksville PA killing all on board. One of the passengers, Todd Beaner, was overheard to urge his fellow passengers “Let’s Roll,” and the phrase has come to be synonymous with self-sacrifice and initiative in a tough situation. The location of the First Ladies’ ceremony of remembrance is the Western Overlook, where a planned Flight 93 National Memorial is scheduled to open next year on the 10-year

anniversary of the attacks. According to the National Park Foundation, “In 2001, the Western Overlook was the location of the investigative command post for Flight 93 and was the point from which the families of the passengers and crew first observed the crash site. It was also where the media reported on the crash and provided the public with the first images from the crash scene.” In remarks at a ceremony on the first anniversary of 9/11, Homeland Security Adviser Tom Ridge said, “We do not know how long it will take to defeat the scourge of terrorism or how many Americans will give their lives for the cause. But we do know one thing with absolute certainty: The passengers and crew of Flight 93 won the first battle.” WATCH THE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR MEMORIAL

Grits have long been a cuisine of choice by Southerners. But where did this thick, coarsely ground, porridge-like substance originate? Grits are one of the oldest American foods dating back to a similar substance eaten by Native American tribes. The early colonists were introduced to rockahominie grits, a form of grits prepared by soaking and beating the grains, by Southeastern Native American tribes. The name arose when Northern Europeans adopted an especially coarse version of the Native American rockahominie — they called it “grit gruel.” Colonists quickly adopted the food into their own culture. The first recorded history of colonists dining on grits was at a dinner with Sir Walter Raleigh and his men and local Native Americans.

FORGOTTEN HERO

With the National Football League season in full swing around the country, and football challenging baseball as the “National Pastime,” it is hard to imagine that professional football struggled to stay afloat in its early years. That it has survived — and thrives beyond imagination — is due in no small part to a name little known among today’s generation of sports fans:

GEORGE HALAS

12 AMERICAN PATRIOT

George Halas was a founding father of professional football back in the beginning of the 1900s. He was player/coach when the Chicago Bears were still playing as the Decatur (IL) Staleys. He was there to move them to Chicago, and he named them the Bears. He was at the first meeting, located at a car dealership lot in Canton, Ohio, where a group of owners formed the American Professional Football Conference, which became the National Football League.

Among other Halas contributions to football: he was the first to hold daily practice sessions, to utilize films of opponents games, to have his games broadcast on radio. During the 1930s he lobbied successfully for league rules that enhanced scoring capabilities which enhanced the popularity of the game. He was instrumental in creating the T-Formation, which led to the Bears dominating the 1940s. He drafted the first African-American player and had the first African-American quarterback in the league. And when World War II threatened to close the league down, he was instrumental in keeping it going. At the same time, he served in the South Pacific with the Navy from 1943-45.
