JACK LALANNE AMERICA’S FITNESS GURU Within the past few weeks, America lost one of its most treasured, dynamic, quotable sons: Jack Lalanne. Throughout his 96 years, Lalanne popularized the practice of exercise, while crusading against the growing dominance of processed and junk foods in the American diet. His electric personality, popularity, and often-ridiculous feats of strength, defined a persona and career that would provide him with decades of fame and wealth.

Lalanne started his long journey as an overweight adolescent burdened with emotional problems and a poor diet. At age 15, he attended a lecture by health expert Paul Bragg, an early promoter of healthy eating and vigorous exercise. The gospel of personal fitness and austere diet had a great impact on the young Lalanne, who immersed himself in the study of physiology and weight training. Upon graduating from college with a chiropractic degree, Lalanne’s first business venture was a health spa in Oakland CA. His gym, which emphasized weight training, was radical for its time. Said Lalanne: “People thought I was a charlatan and a nut. The doctors were against me — they said that working out with weights would give people heart attacks and they would lose their sex drive.” He courted further controversy by promoting vigorous exercise for women and seniors. Always the visionary, he invented several resistance-training machines, such as leg extension machines and pulley systems. His lone gym would grow into a successful franchise of “Jack Lalanne’s European Health Spas,” which eventually morphed into Bally Total Fitness. By the early 1950’s, Lalanne’s methods were more mainstream, and The Jack Lalanne Show premiered locally on television. Picked up for national broadcast in 1959, the show ran successfully for 34 years. His positive, inspirational style resonated with the daytime audience. Now an established star, Lalanne branched out to all forms of media, finding success as an author and recording personality. He may be best remembered for his self-branded juicer line; its commercials became staples of late night and off-hours television.

A natural showman, Lalanne’s feats of strength became a personal trademark. His first came in 1954, when he was 40 years old. He swam the length of the Golden Gate Bridge, underwater, with 140 pound of tanks strapped to his body. In 1976, he swam a mile, handcuffed and shackled, towing 13 boats to represent the original 13 colonies. At age 70, he towed 70 rowboats a mile against strong currents. Lalanne has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the California Hall of Fame – a small sampling of the many awards and recognitions he received in his long life. His contribution to the health of the average American cannot be understated, as his early philosophy of health has become widely accepted. Said Lalanne: “Living is a pain in the butt. Dying is easy. It's like an athletic event. You've got to train for it. You've got to eat right. You've got to exercise. Your health account, your bank account, they’re the same thing. The more you put in, the more you can take out. Exercise is king and nutrition is queen: together, you have a kingdom.” AMERICAN PATRIOT 5

THE AIR FORCE ACADEMY ONE OVER ALL

6 AMERICAN PATRIOT

“One over all,” can be heard shouted over the drone of plane engines in the heart of Colorado. The Air Force was the last of the three major services to have an independent existence — it was a branch of the Army for many decades — and the Academy was the third major military training center. It now takes its rightful place along with West Point and Annapolis in the pantheon of American military history. The Air Force Academy was created in 1954 and approved by President Dwight Eisenhower in order to prepare officers for air service. Congress authorized Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott to find a worthy base for the Academy. After traveling 21,000 miles and considering 580 proposed sites in 45 states, the commission recommended three locations. From those, Secretary Talbott selected the site near Colorado Springs. The state of Colorado contributed a total of $1 million toward the purchase of the land. In July of 1955, as construction began on the Academy, the first class of 306 men was sworn into the school at the temporary base. General Hubert R. Harmon became the first superintendent of the school, and the first class chose the falcon as the mascot. Since the establishment of the Academy, the school has grown to a student body of 4,000 students per class and 560 professors. The campus is now 18,000 acres including the Cadet Chapel, the Aeronautics Research Center, the Prep School, Falcon Stadium, several gyms, air strips, and eateries. Retired bombers are scattered over the campus.

During the Vietnam War, the enrollment at the Academy dramatically increased, as greater numbers of pilots were needed in the war. Women were permitted to enter the Academy in 1976 when President Gerald Ford signed gender equalizing legislation. The school is first rate in every way: Forbes magazine recently ranked the Air Force Academy number 2 for best public colleges in the country and number 7 overall for best colleges. GLACIER A NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PARK

8 AMERICAN PATRIOT

In the northern reaches of the United States there lies 1.4 million acres of mountains, forest, lakes, and glacier carved valleys. Glacier National Park preserves this pristine wilderness, having been established in 1910 by President Howard Taft as the tenth national park. The land that the park occupies has a rich history and tradition, having been important to the Blackfeet, Kootenai, and Salish Indian tribes for thousands of years. Lewis and Clark’s expedition came within 50 miles of the area. Glacier National Park offers diverse flora and fauna. As for plants, there are a wide variety of ferns, grasses, and trees. As for animals, there are all sorts including grizzly and black bears, elk, trout, lynx, and Yellowstone checkerspot butterflies. Most notable among the terrain are 26 small glaciers left scattered across the landscape today. But interestingly the park is named for the geologic effects of larger glaciers which appeared thousands of years ago. Glacier National Park hosts approximately two million visitors a year. The most popular time to visit is in the spring or summer. Then, the temperatures average between the high 60’s and high 70’s — perfect for a morning hike on the nearly 700 miles of trails! Visitors often like to drive the Going-to-Sun Road, which spans 50 miles of the park’s interior. Many also choose to participate in a ranger-led walking tour or taking a boat cruise to learn about the geology, park history, and fun facts. There are two lodges on the premises of the park for those who would like to enjoy longer stays. Kids will have fun exploring in Discovery Cabin or becoming a Glacier Explorer on specially designed ranger tours for families.

Just across the border, in Canada, is Waterton Lakes National Park. In 1931, members of the Rotary Clubs of Alberta and Montana suggested joining the two parks as a symbol of the peace and friendship between the two countries. In 1932, the United States and Canadian governments voted to designate the parks as WatertonGlacier International Peace Park, the world’s first. More recently the parks have received two other international honors. The parks are both Biosphere Reserves, and were named as a World Heritage Site in 1995. This international recognition highlights the uniqueness of this area.

GENE AUTRY THE SINGING COWBOY

Television cowboys were a staple of the early years of the new medium — Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Hopalong Cassidy, Sky King. But no one was more popular than Gene Autry. Known as “The Singing Cowboy,” he was also a composer, well known for hits such as “Back in the Saddle Again,” “Tears On My Pillow,” “Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer,” and “Frosty the Snowman.” Yes, Frosty and Rudolph were his. Oakley, Buffalo Bill Jr., and The Adventures of Champion. Not satisfied with the small screen, he was also featured in 93 motion pictures during his lifetime including Back in the Saddle, The Last Round-Up, and Sierra Sue. Autry won five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his television and movie roles. Autry joined the greats in the Radio Hall of Fame in 2003. At personal appearances, such as a sold-out rodeo at Madison Square Garden, his fans would go wild with enthusiasm. He is considered by many to Autry frequented the airwaves for more than

1944. This week in 1944, U.S. soldiers captured the Marshall Islands, a turning point in WWII. Leading up to the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Marshall Islands had been an administrative center for the Japanese 6th Fleet. Three years later, as the U.S. Navy pushed back toward the Japanese homeland, U.S. forces landed on Kwajalein atoll, seized the archipelago and destroyed the Japanese garrisons. The islands became a deployment center for further advances in the Pacific. After the Japanese surrendered, the islands were used by the U.S. as a testing site for nuclear weapons. The islanders eventually a signed a Compact of Free Association with the U.S. and today are an independent republic.

Let’s face it. Most of us, even if we haven’t lost a job or seen our retirement savings shrink, have taken a hard look at how we spend our money. That is smart thinking. Many people have cut back on things they really enjoy like vacations, recreation, entertainment, and dining out. Golfers play fewer rounds, massage enthusiasts don’t spend quite as much time at the spa, fans are catching fewer games. That smarts!
