NECR-OPHELIA: Maybe Margaret Atwood was right...

I would like to begin this zine by acknowledging the traditional owners and custodians of the land, air and water in which this zine was created. I want to pay my respects to Elders past and present, I extend this respect to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples reading today. I acknowledge and respect their continuing culture and the contribution they make to bettering this city and wider region. Aboriginal land was never formally ceded, full sovereignty was and still remains in the hands of our Aboriginal population. Always Was, Always Will Be

DO WE STILL NEED FEMINISM? Demeaning sexist treatment and second class treatment still prove to be a parasitic force in every aspect of women’s lives, from birth to the grave. This is no mistake, it is baked into the foundations of capitalism. Women feeling existential distress about their appearance is, for the ruling class, not a social disease, but a lucrative business model. Under the capitalist system in which we live under, women’s oppression is reinforced by the experience of exploitation in the workplace and the unpaid labor in the domestic sphere. Making sexism very profitable.

The role of the family under capitalism ensures a subservient labor supply, it also plays a key part in initiating people into the gender roles they will be expected to perform for the rest of their lives. As such, children begin to accept the unequal division of labor between men and women as natural.

So yes, we still need feminism. However, we must move past the illusion of progress spoon-fed to us by the ruling class. Women’s liberation is central to the fight for an anti-capitalist society.
