A new year means party and celebration, capturing moments, and preserving them forever. Time to brush up your skills from last New Year Eve’s party and make the most of it this year too. We have gathered some pointers that are photography tips for beginners and experts which can be used this New Year’s Eve. A lot of photographers tend to make mistakes and end up with blurry images, but there are some tips and tricks that can spin the night around, use these tips to improve your photography skills and ace that new year photoshoot.

Here are some new photography tips and tricks for this new year.

• Planning: Spend a good chunk of your time planning. Don’t go crazy over everything that is in front of you. Capture only a specific area and group. Make a list of things you want to highlight, if you want you can also plan on a theme. If it is outdoors, plan accordingly if it is an intimate gathering, choose subjects accordingly. This is one of the most important photography tips for beginners.

• Clicking festive portraits? Look for lights: Lights can make or break a picture. This is also a very important part of Portrait photography tips. Be careful with the surrounding lights and make sure that the focus is not overtaken by the lights behind your subject. If there are sparkly lights, you better choose to move away from them.

• Flash or no flash?: You can choose flash on very rare occasions when you actually need the brightness but you can also choose a good low-light camera like Lumix S1R. Flash however is not advised even in the portrait photography tips in low light as it will wash out the subject’s face. If shooting outdoors, you can choose your shoot points of where you need flash.

• Night photography: You can find many night photography tips online and you may use some of these during the new year eve celebration. Making use of the ambient light is somehow still one of the best night photography tips because it is a celebration and there will be many lights in the surrounding. Use flash very cautiously or add in a light at the backdrop if it is a group photo. Try capturing the atmosphere, the ambience, fireplace and the decorated dining table. Use a smaller aperture to match your ISO, change angles, switch from portrait to landscape, and don’t be scared of manual focus.

• Equipment Prepare your equipment a day before. Extra memory cards and a tripod is a must. You’ll obviously plan your photoshoot, but what if by midnight your memory is almost full and you have no time to filter pictures you want to delete. There will be shots where you have to hold on to your camera for a long time and it becomes impossible, a tripod will help you take stable pictures.
