Nikon India Private Limited Learn the Science and Art of DSLR Photography from the Experts If you have purchased a DSLR or a mirrorless camera and after you have unpacked the camera if you are intimidated by its dials and buttons then you should know the basics of a DSLR Photography. For the beginners, there are a few basics that you should know to update your photography skills. These tips shall help to build a very strong foundation. The best way to learn is to practice photography often so that you can learn from the mistakes. It does not matter whether you are a newcomer or an established photographer. Some of the DSLR Photography tips include the following: Hold the Camera Properly — Many beginners do not hold the cameras properly that causes cameras to shake. You can use tripods to prevent a camera from shaking but as you will not use a tripod if you are not shooting in a low light area, it is vital that you hold the camera properly. You should hold the camera with both your hands. Shoot in RAW — RAW is like jpeg, however, unlike jpeg RAW captures the image data recorded by the camera’s sensor instead of compressing it. If you shoot in RAW, it is easy to get good quality images and you can have better control post-processing. You can rectify problems including underexposure or overexposure and you can adjust things such as temperature, contrast, and white balance. Exposure Triangle — The exposure triangle refers to important elements such as aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. When you shoot in a manual mode, you can balance the three things to receive well-lit and sharp photos.

Nikon India Private Limited ISO — It controls the sensitivity of light. If the ISO setting is low, the camera shall be less sensitive and a higher ISO indicates more sensitivity. As the ISO enhances, the quality of the images shall reduce and there will be a noise on images. An ISO of 100–200 is ideal while shooting outdoors and in low light areas ISO should be 400–800. Aperture — Aperture is the opening in the lens and it controls the amount of light that goes into the sensor of the camera. If the aperture is wider, it allows more light. Narrow aperture means less light. If you want only your subject then you should opt for a wider aperture. On the other hand, if you want a group shot, you should use a narrow one. Shutter Speed — Shutter speed controls the duration a shutter remains open while taking a picture. If the shutter remains open for a longer duration, more light can get into the sensor of the camera. If the shutter speed is fast, you will get a freezing option and a longer shutter speed shall give you blur motion. Wider aperture for Portraits When you shoot portraits, the subject is the main focus and you can achieve this with a wider aperture. It will keep the subject sharp and keep the distractions blurred in the background. Narrow aperture for Landscapes Landscape photographs need a different approach. This is because everything in the picture right from the foreground to the background everything should be in focus. If you are shooting anything where you need all in focus, you must choose a narrow aperture instead of a wider aperture. Getting blurry, overexposed, or bad photos in DSLR cameras can be frustrating. Instead of letting such photos discourage you, use DSLR Camera Photography tips as a learning tool. Spend a little amount of time to study the art of photography and learn how to improve it. You can study DSLR photography and strengthen your photography area.
