hat is the unique focus of your magazine?
Kore is a pocket sized publication, each edition we focus on spreading awareness of a different cause (Philanthropy) and infuse it with Entertainment and Style.
How did you determine there was an opportunity to focus on this niche? There is a magazine for everything health, entertainment, beauty and fashion, but their aren't many publication that are able to incorporate all these things and still keep the attention of their audience. We noticed there was not a platform for Urban Philanthropy.
What was the largest challenge in starting your magazine and how would you have addressed that challenge today (if differently)? Understanding the different components that it takes to create the project. I spent a few years working with other publications, getting to know the in's and outs of all departments before starting my own. Experience was the key, there are some many things a starting out publisher will not know or will not understand. There are some many ways to get to your target, no specific path, so to have an open mind and listen to others that have gone through similar situations helped me not waste time or money. The biggest component was TIME. Nothing helps more than time and commitment. So many publishers I had worked for expected immediate success with their new magazine, not realizing you must build your creditability before asking for Advertisements or support.

The largest challenge was deciding and defining what the niche of the magazine would be. Every publisher thinks their Idea or Magazine is the best, but knowing what truly will make it successful is key, understanding that the opinion of your targeted readers is more important then personal likes and dislikes. Too many "This is what I want and Like" and not enough "This is what THEY like".
How did you fund the start up? Savings to develop a prototype. Without a prototype or something to show professionally, Advertisers are hard to come by. You cant sell something NEW without something to show. And I learned that even having a few copies wasn’t enough, Advertisers want to see the publication around before they jump aboard. So by saving money, I was able to get a few thousand to distribute locally and I grew from there.
What are your key revenue elements going forward and do you already have some advertising commitments? Its important to focus on quality, cheap products get cheap accounts, your magazines quality reflects on the service that you provide to advertisers. Not being greedy and making sure your product and workers are taken care has a bigger pay off. We put everything we receive into our product, we’re not worried about profits right now, it’s all about growth and quality. This is not a quick money making scheme, it’s a chance to build an empire that pays off HUGE down the road. We’ve been able to thankfully attain advertising, which is growing with each issue. Please don’t think it just happens, you have to work and build a relationship with your advertisers.
What formats and channels are you using to reach your audience (print, web, tablet, newsletters, apps?) We are a Print publication but we reach out audience through web, social media and soon tablet and apps! You can flip the pages of any issue electronically on our website, www.KoreMagazine.com.
What services or vendors can you recommend to other publishers and what did they do to help you achieve goals or stay on budget? For us Graphics and Photography were key. Image is everything, so we focused on that, giving the Magazine a colorful and creative look. We were able to grab the public's attention so they could reach the second part, the content. Having different and original content has allowed us to grow on average 65% each quarter. Having Five strong workers is better then Thirty average workers. We use www.InfernoDesignz.com for our Image, this allowed us to stand alone and strong.
