Deer Hunting With Stargardt Chris has Stargardt disease and thought he would never be able to hunt again. Stargardt is a rare genetic eye disease that happens when fatty material builds up on the macula — the small part of the retina needed for sharp, central vision. His center vision progressively got worst over time to the point that he could no longer target with traditional iron sights or a scoped rifle. Stargardt had left him with only peripheral vision. Colt got this mule deer on a private ranch near Durango, Colorado. He was guided by an organization called Outdoor Buddies. He got his cow elk on a private ranch in Estes Park, CO that allows physically disabled hunters to take animals.

Colt tells me he got his deer from a blind, but when we were scouting for elk yesterday, we found a big herd here in Estes Park on a piece of property where he could take a shot. There were about 150 animals in the herd, and the bulls were pushing them pretty hard (i.e.: moving pretty quickly). We finally got a good broadside shot at 120 yards. With the daylight filter in place, the viewfinder was clear and I was able to help Colt take his shot. Very clean! One -shot kill. 500 lb cow.
