DECORATING TRICKS TO GET YOUR HOUSE READY FOR SPRING
S
pring cleaning might get all of the attention, but there’s definitely something to be said for spring decorating. Take your cue from the changing weather to make some season-appropriate swaps to your decor as well and you’ll end up with a fresh new look for spring.
1. SWAP OUT WALL ART. Something as simple as adjusting the artwork can instantly change the look of a room and make it feel like new. “I love to do a spring refresh in the bedroom,” says designer Karen Vidal. Try swapping out heavy, luxe drapes for lighter, fresher fabrics, such as linen or cotton. 2. SWITCH YOUR BEDDING. Opt for lightweight fabrics and brighter colors for a spring refresh. “Give your bedroom a quick spring makeover by replacing your bedding,” says designer Young Huh. “Remove the heavy duvets and replace with a lighter blanket and change out your pillowcases and decorative pillows with breezy colors.” 3. INSTALL NEW LAMPSHADES. If you’re tired of your ancient lamps but don’t have the budget to purchase new ones, update them with a simple lampshade. “Switching out plain lampshades on a table or floor lamp for a brighter option is a quick way to add a jolt of refreshing spring color to a space,” says design blogger and author Will Taylor of Bright Bazaar. The colorful piece can also be used to tie in other accents with similar colors in the room. 4. COVER YOUR FLOORS. “Don’t forget about your flooring!” says designer Tom Stringer. “Fresh, inexpensive sisal or hooked cotton rugs for porches and hallways add an element of spring to a space.” You can keep these rugs out for the summer months too; they’ll make your space seem lighter. 5. ADD IN COLORFUL ACCENTS. Color can really bring some cheer and happiness into a space – and isn’t that what spring’s all about? “To brighten up a room come springtime, use playful accessories like vintage vases, trays, pillows and other accent pieces in pastel colors,” says Leura Fine, founder and CEO of Laurel & Wolf. “A soft color palette will add a bright and airy feeling to any room.” 6. FILL YOUR HOUSE WITH GREENS. After months of snow, rain and freezing temps, the best way to celebrate spring is by bringing a few fresh plants indoors to breathe some life into a room. “Succulents have been trending like crazy thanks in part to their ease of care, but also because of their spring-like dusty shades of greens, grays and purples,” says designer Sarah Vaile of Sarah Whit Interior Design. “It’s the perfect accessory to introduce a bit of nature to a room, while also creating a spa-like feel.” You can experiment with other houseplants, too, or even fresh flower arrangements.

CREATING A
ready - to - sell HOME
O
nce spring comes, for-sale signs pop up with the daffodils. An early start to home-selling season helps homeowners move faster and be ready once it’s time to get their houses on the market. If you’re thinking about selling your home, it’s a good idea to get it into a show state before the for-sale sign is out front.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS Everyone has heard that you only have one chance to make a first impression, and it’s true. Begin with a deep clean. Outdated light fixtures are forgivable, but a dirt ring where the carpet meets the baseboard isn’t. It makes potential buyers wonder what else was missed. A deep clean includes steaming carpets, dusting walls, cleaning HVAC returns and vents, and polishing light fixtures. Even refrigerators and ovens should be cleaned and look appealing. For one homeowner, while everything looked neat, one peek inside the oven killed any potential sale. It looked like a war had been waged there, and made a sight that couldn’t be unseen. Avoid that mistake by cleaning everything, everywhere, thoroughly. Make windows and light fixtures sparkle, and touch up paint dings and smudges.
REPAIRS Give your home a head start by hiring an inspector before the sale. This enables you to find problems before a potential buyer does. Plus, having a list of corrections that were made in advance of the sale makes a positive impression that the house is in good shape. Look at areas of use, such as door handles. Ensure that all the doors, including garage doors, are oiled and are squeak-free.
MORE THAN SUPERFICIAL Think home buyers won’t look in drawers and under the sink? Think again. Go through cabinets and closets, and pare down. Throw out excess, and keep all closets, cabinets and drawers orderly. One rule of thumb is to remove 30 percent of everything you have to create more visual space. This means having closet rods that aren’t packed full and bending in the middle. Clear off countertops in the kitchen and bathroom, and make as much clear, open space as you can. If decorating isn’t your strong suit, hire a home stager to help you work with what you’ve got before the Realtor sends a photographer to put up photos that will either close or sink the deal.
ADD STYLE Nothing can sell a house like curb appeal. It’s like a pretty box with a satin bow: visually inviting. Polish up your home’s look so that the sale isn’t lost at the street. Find small ways to update, like fresh mulch in the front yard beds or a pot of welcoming flowers by the door. Create a welcoming entrance at the foyer, and before long you’ll be putting “sold” sign out front. ©2022 KATHRYN WEBER. DISTRIBUTED BY TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY, LLC.

DECORATING WITH BLACK BRINGS ELEGANCE, DEPTH
T
here’s a color that is at once all colors, yet it’s the one most feared in decorating. That color is black. Although black isn’t a color highly regarded for walls, black is coming into favor for decorative use in surprising ways. There are several guidelines for decorating with this shade that are important to know so that everything looks balanced and you keep the hue from becoming too harsh. But if you’re looking to make an impact that shows your decorative fearlessness, black is your color.
HEAVYWEIGHT There’s no doubting the drama and intensity of the color black. It’s strong and elegant and can be used in any decorating style. Having black accents and accessories is a chic way to add gravitas to your room and unify it. Unless, you want the room to be dark, if you use black paint on the walls, you’ll want to balance the room by having a bright, clear white for the ceiling and trim paint. When you have black walls, play up the color by adding strong, bright accents. Artwork with bold colors pops against a black wall. Good lighting is also important to keep the room from becoming depressing. Layer in lighting with lamps, wall sconces, and chandeliers. If black walls are too much of a stretch, try adding dark floors.
BLACK BOOST There are some places where black simply shines. From front doors to interior doors, a rich, glossy black is as gorgeous and elegant as it gets. Black doors and window frames are especially popular in the modern farmhouse design, but black has always been a classic.
Take the black-and-white checkerboard floors. It’s a clean, timeless look. Today, though, black is coming into its own in the new black stainless appliances. These appliances read metal but without the glare and look fabulous against dark or black painted cabinets. Black is also showing up in bathroom fixtures and as a metal option on shower frames. The black color disappears into the background and looks clean and contemporary.
EXPERIMENT If you’re ready to express your decorating derring-do, black is the go-to color. Give a powder bathroom a coat of black paint or try a black patterned wallpaper. Pair with sparkling lighting fixtures and bright white trim and a glossy interior door. Or, go in contrast with white wallpaper featuring a black pattern and finish out the room with black trim. In a study, what could be more introspective than black? Try an almost-black such as Farrow and Ball Off Black (www.farrowball.com). Pair with a dramatic lighting fixture and leather tufted sofa for a room that invites you to linger. In the kitchen, give your island cabinets a coat of black to update it and give it more weight. Instead of white open cabinets, paint the wall behind open shelves or cabinets with black so dishes pop. Give barstools a coat of black or paint the pantry door black. Give window and table linens a black and white color scheme. It makes the perfect backdrop for colorful dishes. ©2022 KATHRYN WEBER. DISTRIBUTED BY TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY, LLC.

GIVE YOUR HOME A SPRING MAKEOVER As the gray days of winter give way to the burgeoning spring, with its chartreuse green shoots of grass and leaves, you’ll want to bring your home out of the winter doldrums, too. Give your decor a shot of springtime with easy ideas that will bring your home into sunnier days and make it feel as bright and vibrant as the outdoors.
WINTER PURGE
SPRING INFLUENCE
Give winter the heave-ho by picking up the remnants of winter throughout the house. Grab those dark pillows, heavy plaids or other vestiges of winter, and pack them away in the attic or closet. In their place, add smart pops of bright color in the living room, kitchen and bedroom.
Bring the changing seasons into your house with a springtime display of bulbs, plants, birds, rabbits and pots of greenery. Even a glass bottle with a simple branch evokes the feeling of spring.
A pretty pale lavender throw on the sofa or chair will keep you cozy and look fresh. In the bedroom, replace dark comforters with soft, airy cotton blankets in light or neutral colors. Put out new towels in the bathrooms in bright and happy shades. For an extra springtime touch, place a pretty candle in a soft scent in a pastel glass holder. In the kitchen, replace dark dishtowels and hot pads with light, bright options featuring cheery prints. Add a white pitcher or vase on the counter. and fill it with a colorful bunch of flowers, like tulips. Or, for more fragrance, put out a pot of hyacinths for a beautifully scented kitchen. If you have a kitchen window, add some pots of ivy or fresh herbs. Set the table with a pretty runner, napkins and colorful glasses. Add a pot of daffodils or ivy in a pretty white pot in the center, or fill sugar and creamer pitchers with pots of delicate flowers.
Purchase greenery at your local florist or market to fill vases. Be sure to give your bookshelves and side tables some springtime touches with figurines of spring, such as a pair of playful rabbits or bowl of pastel eggs. Tuck in little spring accessories on shelves, bedside tables and in window sills. Freshen up your fireplace with a collection of forced bulbs or branches on the hearth or on the mantel top. Give your foyer a spring makeover with a brightlycolored lamp, a vase of flowers or a collection of mirrors to add extra light in your entryway. In the powder room, add some flower-shaped soaps or a stem of flowers. Full of spring fever? Consider adding a peel-and-stick wallpaper with floral or spring motifs. On the porch, make spring and visitors feel welcome by adding potted plants and bushels of daffodils, greenery and a cheery doormat. Place a basket of spring flowers, such as peonies, near your front door for seasonal spruce-up. Your home will feel fresh and ready to embrace the spring season.

Carla took the time to know us and become a part of our little family for a while. She is kind, genuine, generous, calm, and sophisticated. As moving can be a stressful event, Carla was extremely helpful and always checked in to make sure that we were doing well. If you are selling or looking for a home, Carla should be your very first contact.” -- MMB “Just a shout out to Carla Wilson. We used her for our realtor. She is a Willowwood neighbor. She listed our house for sale on June 14th. We had an offer the following day over list price and it settled today ( July 15th). Everything went so smoothly. She is a friendly, responsive realtor. We would highly recommend Carla. The photographer she uses takes beautiful pictures.”-- Janice
