4 SIDELINES “[He’s] my friend, finish and klaar”
– Jackie Selebi on Glen Agliotti
“Go out. Bastard!
Go out. You bloody agent!” – Julius Malema, evicting a BBC journalist from a press conference
“Shoot the Boer!”
– Malema, defiantly singing a struggle song
“This court is
satisfied that the utterances by the respondent amounted to hate speech” – Magistrate Colleen Collis, on sentencing Malema
THE FIRST HALF FOUL PLAY, RED CARDS AND PENALTIES Old timers reminisce as the country careers towards anarchy. A surge in electricity prices shocks embattled consumers, police chiefs declare war on a new front (obesity) while their Police Minister enjoys five star privileges and government officials reward themselves with fancy cars. These are the scenes that greet the opening months of the year in review. Justice is served another lemon, as a yes-man takes over as NPA chief. The youth leadership squabbles and racism bubbles. Our president asserts himself, and fathers a love child. His State of the Nation address is thereby reduced to a joke. Warning lights are flashing, not just atop the presidential motorcade, but also in cartoons and newspaper editorials around the country. The murder trial of Glen Agliotti reveals a cozy relationship with top cop Jackie Selebi. The 20th anniversary of Mandela’s release invites us to reflect for a moment. Are we becoming a banana republic? In the nursery of our future, Malema runs amok, hatefully screaming at foe and free press and openly defying the parent body. Grilled over his tender stakes, he prevails, and continues to hog
the gravy. While corruption takes hold, forged R200 notes flood the economy. Malfeasance spreads like a virus throughout state enterprises and the private sector. Snorting the slogans of people’s power, elected representatives dip their snouts deeper into the trough. Vavi protests, offending his alliance partners, while an unrestrained Malema ups the tempo by singing ‘Kill the Boer’, a call which is followed by the murder of Boer leader Eugene Terre’Blanche. Dark clouds gather over the republic. The President will have none of this. He takes off to Buckingham Palace to visit the Queen. ‘What of the opposition?’ one might ask amidst all this chaos. What indeed. The DA evokes outrage with an open toilet policy that harks back to its dark past, while a power struggle between the leaders of Cope effectively extinguishes that beacon of hope. The chapter ends ominously with Julius Malema visiting Zimbabwe to seek inspiration from our northern neighbour’s great liberator, Robert Mugabe.
“Kiss the Boer!” – Malema ups the ante
“There’s no limit to the ANC’s accomplishments. They also made committing corruption fashionable”. THE FIRST HALF
