There are nine Ryu in Bujinkan and three are Ninjutsu Ryu. Bujinkan was known for a long time for Togakure Ryu Ninpo, the reality is that many of the techniques which were studied were actually from the other school.

Ninjutsu was developed in Japan, Iga and Koga to be precise. The art is believed to be the result of training methods which were used by Shugenja and Yamabushi. Most of the ninjutsu Ryu does not consist of assassins.

Even some are believed to be of samurai status. Ninjutsu clans were mainly founded because of the bad luck of the warrior who lost the war and then chooses to live with their families in the mountains. They did not opt to go for ritualistic suicide as demanded by the samurai code. Other ruys founded by the farmers. The military government considered these farmers and peasants to be less than human.

The only chance of survival available was to flee to other regions and learn and develop a skill set which will not only help for survival but also deal with the aggression of the samurai. There were many myths related to them and the tradition they had. They were believed to be nothing in reality and people considered them simply as a fairy

tale. In the mid 1100’s, there was a samurai known as Daisuke Togakure. He was on the losing side and lost a battle. Later he escaped to the mountains of Iga region in Japan. This is why he is known and credited for the creation of Togakure Ryu Ninjutsu.

The ninja families which moved to Iga later grew to become an important part of the military history of Japan. With their support to Tokugaqa Ieyasu they were able to contribute to help in the making of Tokugawa Shogunate and later were also recruited for many important government posts.
