The Veterans Museum occupies the second floor of the main building and was opened in October of 2007 as a tribute to the men and women from the Flatonia area who have served in the Armed Forces, and as a reminder of the sacrifices they have made for our country. A “Wall of Honor” displays more than 300 photographs of individual veterans.

ity parks and open spaces improve our physical and psychological health, strengthen our communities, and make our cities and neighborhoods more attractive places to live and work. Flatonia’s abundance of family friendly parks is a boon for both visitors and residents alike, and a source of pride for Flatonia Mayor Bryan Milson.
“Parks have always been important to me,” added Milson. “Most cities our size don’t have the abundance of parks that we have here in Flatonia. As we budget money for the parks, we’re always trying to improve what we have.” CENTRAL MEMORIAL PARK “Three trees have been planted in the park in memory of people from our community,” said Milson. “We refurbished the gazebo a few years ago. It’s a really nice, quiet park. I know you wouldn’t expect that with it being downtown, but it really is.”

RAILROAD PARK Located in Railroad Park, Flatonia Tower No. 3 is a two-story rail tower constructed by the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railroad in 1902 to serve as a switching tower at the intersection with the San Antonio & Aransas Pass line. Texas began its numbering system for rail switching towers in 1901 and Flatonia’s was number three after that date. “Flatonia Tower No. 3 is very historic and means a lot to the town,” said Milson. “It was the exchange tower between north and south, east and west, at the crossroads in Flatonia. We also have a caboose, picnic tables and a walking trail. It’s a nice place to hang out.” In addition to the railroad memorabilia, there is another attraction that is unique to Flatonia. “My favorite part is the old jail,” shared Milson. “It is the oldest wooden-structured jail in Texas that is still standing. It’s not always open to the public, but you can still see in it. It was a two-cell jail. It’s just something you can’t see anywhere else. I don’t know if Dillinger or anyone like that was in it, but you never know!” Located in the Flatonia National Historic District at the corner of 108 West South Main Street, Railroad Park is bordered on the north by the Union Pacific rail line, on the east by Penn Street and on the south by East South Main Street. Donated to the city by the Garbade family in the 70s, Garbade Park houses the little league field, a concession stand, and a playground.
“It’s a really popular park,” added Milson. “There’s also another gazebo, barbecue pits and picnic tables, and a playground with a playscape. Lots of folks enjoy the walking trail that connects McWhirter Park with 7-Acre Park.”
“The park equipment in Garbade Park is well suited for younger kids,” shared Milson. “There are teeter totters, slides, and swings.” This two-acre park is located at 1255 East US Highway 90.

7-ACRE PARK
Although not yet established, plans are underway for a new pocket park that will be named Flato Park.
Located at 111 Garbade Lane, 7-Acre Park features a multi-purpose soccer field, skate park, walking trail, picnic tables, sitting benches and a popular disc golf course. “It’s an 18-hole disc course that people come from all over to play,” said Milson. “There are six baskets, but if you play them in the correct order, there are 18 different holes. People come from Smithville, Gonzales, Bastrop and even Austin to play disc golf here because there are not that many around. The multiuse soccer field is also used for pee wee football, baseball and T-ball … a variety of sports.”
“Where 1st Street ends into South Penn Street, that is where Flato Park will be,” shared Milson. “Our plans are kind of up in the air right now. We know there will be some sort of equipment that covers a pretty broad spectrum of kids, but we don’t have The caboose is a rare find a plan together for the park just yet.” and popular attraction at Railroad Park.

A Journey of Food COWGIRL PROVISIONS’ OWNER ANNIE PRYOR SHARES HER ARTISTIC TALENT THROUGH HER LOVE OF FOOD WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BANSE STOKES
With inspired dishes like Marry Me Meatloaf and Aunt Sally’s Corn Soup, Cowgirl Provisions entrepreneur chef Annie Pryor has become renowned in the area for her culinary skills. Her high standards have set a new paradigm in Flatonia with Cowgirl Provisions. Pryor’s story is an inspiring one of someone who worked her way up through the trenches to follow her passion for food. Annie, which is her father’s nickname for her, said that she learned life, food, and love of people from him growing up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. After college, Pryor began in hospitality in New Orleans and then went on to Washington D.C. “I started with humble beginnings,” said Pryor. “I worked for a law firm in Washington, and I started selling sticky buns, apple pies and chocolate cake on the side. That side job quickly turned into a thriving catering business, retail storefront, and over 75 on-call employees. When I first began, I worked in an industrial kitchen commissary. Every Christmas, the facility had a contract for two tons of Chex Party Mix, and they made it in small batches. I’ve never seen so much of the stuff in my whole life. Recently one of my customers asked if I could make him a batch. I made it for him and now people call me all the time now for party mix. I find it hilarious!” One might begin to wonder how this big city chef ended up settling in a small, Texas town like Flatonia. Although she had spent a lot of time building her career in metropolitan areas, all it took

was one wrong turn for Pryor to decide Flatonia was home. “I was on the way to look at property in Shiner because I have friends that live there,” shared Pryor. “My realtor took a wrong turn and I fell in love with this building. It was the perfect location for Cowgirl Provisions. Here I can do what I love, creating beauty through food and making people happy. I always know I’ve done a good job when the room goes silent, and people quit talking because they are eating. When there is silence, I know they are enjoying their food.” Popular dishes from Cowgirl Provisions include smoked chicken and spinach white lasagna, vegetable casseroles, Greek salads, sesame noodles and Signature Chocolate Chip Cookies dusted with sea salt. Her soups which are also a hit with her customers, year-round. “I do a pulled pork tortilla soup that is wonderful and a lot of Stryk Jersey Farm milk-based soups,” added Pryor. “My aunt used to make the best creamed corn, so I created a soup called Aunt Sally’s Corn Soup, as a tribute to her. I season my Hot Tamale Chips for the tortilla soup with my original Cowgirl Crack Seasoning. My latest creation, Warm Feta, is a recipe from the past which has renewed popularity with my grazing tables.” Cowgirl Provisions is located at 116 East South Main Street in Flatonia. The menu, information on catering to-go, and her cooking classes are available on social media and through the Flatonia Chamber of Commerce.

CULINARY DESTINATION PHOTOGRAPHED BY EMILY HENDERSON
EATS AND TREATS
From Mobile to Mainstay DARLIN’S DINER SLINGS GREAT PANCAKES, EGGS BENEDICT, AND DELECTABLE LUNCHES - WITH A SIDE OF HISTORY WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BANSE STOKES
Building on her experience of running a mobile food truck during her freshman year in College Station, Taylor Laney was quick to jump in on a permanent location when the old Darling Emporium building came up for sale in downtown Flatonia. She opened Darlin’s Diner in that location in September 2021, a popular foodie destination for both locals and travelers alike. “The food truck, Darlin’s Donuts, got big fast and it was a whole lot of fun,” said Laney. “We did concessions at Kyle Field, and events all over Texas; weddings, birthdays, sorority parties and stuff like that. After I graduated from A&M with a construction degree, my parents, who own the Harrison Room across the street, told me this building was for sale. I was living in hotels and traveling all over the place and now I live and work in the same spot. My dad and I renovated the upstairs into my home and then renovated the downstairs for Darlin’s Diner. We repurposed a lot of the building; the celling is original and so is the floor. The elevator in the back is the coolest feature of the entire building. It’s on an old pully system.”
Welcoming people into a place that is both home and business came naturally for Laney. “For me, my work is all about the people and creating an atmosphere,” shared Laney. “Darlin’s Diner is a place for people to come and feel like home, because this building is also my home. I want people to feel like they’re walking into someone’s home and feel welcomed. It’s a different experience than just walking into a restaurant.” And although sometimes it’s hard for a new restaurant to find its place in a small town, that wasn’t the case here. The community has been very welcoming to Darlin’s Diner since day one. “I was worried that on our opening day we weren’t going to have a lot of people because the word wasn’t really out yet,” added Laney. “I made a post on Instagram

CULINARY DESTINATION on Sunday because we were opening on the next day, Monday. I don’t want to say that was the biggest mistake, but it was! We had a line wrapped around the building at 6:30 a.m. and it didn’t stop for the rest of the day! When I saw that, I was so excited and, fortunately, I had help. I could not do anything I do without my amazing staff. This is such a good environment.”
“
Darlin’s Diner is open every day for breakfast and lunch, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features a variety of homestyle classics that will fill any rumbling tummy that walks in the door. “The biscuits and gravy are my favorite,” shared Laney. “Many come in for the eggs benedict, but I love the homemade gravy we make every day with bacon juice, like I like to call it. It’s good! Or people get the Darlin’s breakfast, which is where you get everything. It’s massive and I don’t see a ton of people finish it. At lunch, I like the cheese-bacon-avocado-ranch burger. It’s the most ordered thing on the menu.” More than just a diner, Laney stays on top of her game, planning events that serve to not only draw people to her diner, but to the benefit of the rest of the community. “I’ve already set the date for Muffins & Mufflers 2022,” said Laney. “It’s our classic car show that we put on - Saturday, May 14. We had a huge turnout the first year, so we’re excited to go bigger and better this year. We want to bring people from outside of Flatonia to town to see all of the amazing stuff that we have going on; keep people revisiting and coming back to discover this great town and amazing community.” Darlin’s Diner is located at 114 East South Main in downtown Flatonia and online at www.darlinsdiner.com.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS ART DISPLAYS
Parade of Quilts BEAUTIFUL QUILTS ARE ON DISPLAY THROUGHOUT TOWN The Parade of Quilts runs throughout the month of March. Visitors can view quilt displays throughout the town and local businesses and shops. Women brought quilting to Texas long ago and have continued to practice their art, passing their traditions down through the generations and ultimately making it one of the most highly valued domestic arts. During westward expansion, creating quilts was a routine part of the domestic training given to young girls in the United States, where the patchwork quilt was well established as the main form of bedding. This quilt was an American innovation. In frontier Texas, that same necessity made the quilt a vital part of everyday life. Everyone is welcome to come view the expansive display of quaility, both old and new. Stop by the Flatonia Chamber of Commerce office, 208 East North Main Street, for a map.

If you’re in the mood for something different, you may want to try our Flammkuchen!

“When we bought the whole building, it included the room where the ice cream parlor is now,” shared John. “The theater doesn’t bring in much revenue, so we needed to do something to not only make money but also be a draw for the public and an asset to the community. So, we created the ice cream and pizza side to fund the whole project.” Lyric Ice Cream Parlor is run by their manager, Sarah Wagner. An ice cream lover’s dream, customers swoon over the handmade waffle cones topped with Blue Bell ice cream and toppings of their choice that run the gamut from coconut and chopped nuts, to gummy worms and rainbow sprinkles.
“We’re sticking to the basics right now,” said John. “We have seven varieties of pizza. If you’re in the mood for something different, you may want to try our Flammkuchen (pronounced flam-KOOK-en), a pizza variety that comes from South Germany. Wine and Dine WINE HAUS OF FLATONIA OFFERS PATRONS THE BEST WINE, FOOD, AND MUSIC - TEXAS-STYLE WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BANSE STOKES
When Lori Berger opened the doors of the Wine Haus in the summer of 2016, she was taking a gamble. Fortunately for Flatonia, that gamble paid off. In an area mostly familiar with old school beer joints and hangouts, the new hotspot was embraced quickly by both locals and out-of-towners alike.

MEET THE NEIGHBORS PHOTOGRAPHED BY LORI OLIVAREZ-LIGUES

CISTERN
SEE EVERYTHING THE AREA HAS TO OFFER WHEN YOU STAY AND PLAY IN FLATONIA
V
isit our neighbors the next time you stay in Flatonia. Our surrounding towns are all worth the short drive. There’s so much to see and do when you stay and play in Flatonia!
Enjoy a short 13 minute drive to Cistern, a charming community proud of their Czech and German heritage. Beautiful landscapes, ranches and countryside surround the unincorporated town. Visitors will want to stop in at Cistern Store, known far and wide for their classic hamburgers, cold beer, and live entertainment.
MULDOON
Drive only 12 minutes down the road and you’ll find Muldoon - a charming south central Texas community that has much to offer history enthusiasts and those who enjoy spending time outdoors. Muldoon sits undisturbed and nearly forgotten, with only a few historical buildings and homes. Muldoon’s 15 minutes of fame came when the community was filmed as a stand in for Stubbs, Iowa in the movie Michael, starring John Travolta. A short 11 mile drive and you’ll find the city of Waelder, a charming community known for their hospitality and unique stores and shops. The City of Waelder has a variety of restaurants, parks, playscapes, public library, and a community center for numerous recreation activities for residents and visitors.
WAELDER
Take a short six minute drive down Highway 90 East and you’ll find the quaint community of Praha. Home of one of the iconic painted churches from the nineteenth century, visitors will want to be sure to step inside of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Gottfried Flury, a Swissborn artist from Moulton, painted much of the interior using a combination of stenciling, infill painting, and freehand techniques. Still an active church, visitors are asked to be respectful of Mass times when planning their trip. FLATONIA, TEXAS |
