Falls grew quickly with the construction of a rail yard to transport the unique Sunset Red pink granite from nearby Granite Mountain. The stone moved out across the state to construct the Texas Capitol building, among others in Austin, and Gulf Coast jetties. Completion of Max Starcke Dam in 1951 created Lake Marble Falls and the visage in the narrows of the Colorado River was transformed as the background music of rushing falls submerged. The growing economy evolved from industrialbased granite mining to tourism, commerce and leisure. Today’s city limits extend south all the way to Texas 71, providing utilities to the new Baylor Scott & White (BS&W) Hospital and Wayne & Eileen Hurt Regional Medical Center.

While Burnet County is well known for the growth of bluebonnets, the Texas Z[H[L ÅV^LY P[ PZ UV[ HZ ^LSS known that the county has experienced magnanimous ÄUHUJPHS JVTTLYJPHS HUK residential growth as well. Lakes, championship golf courses, fabulous vistas, outdoor activities, NVVK MVVK HUK ^PUL ÄYZ[ class medical and health care facilities and great Texas music combine for some of Burnet County’s best points of interest for those visiting, as well as those making a new home

here. It’s one of those places that sells itself with its abundance of tourism, WSLHZHU[ HUK HɈVYKHISL retirement living and appealing recreation options. It continues to grow and change at a rapid pace. While agriculture and a rural SPMLZ[`SL Z[PSS SHYNLS` KLÄUL the culture here, more and more, commuters, retirees, lake enthusiasts and others who want to escape from IPN JP[` SP]PUN MVY H ^LLRLUK or a lifetime are coming to this part of the Texas Hill Country.

This growth has been managed by Burnet County leadership, including Judge James Oakley, and Commissioners Pct. 1 Bill Neve, Pct. 2 Russell Graeter, Pct. 3 Ronnie Hibler and Pct. 4 Joe Don Dockery. Neve and Hibler will see the end of their term in May. Their leadership is accompanied by that of County Attorney is Eddie Arredondo, and four Justices of the Peace; Pct. 1 Roxanne Nelson, Pct. 2 Lisa Whitehead, Pct. 3 Peggy Simon, and Pct. 4 Guilford Jones, a former District Judge. New multi-family, medium income housing is sprouting up in the cities of Marble Falls and Burnet, the latter of which has been seeing increase of success with the MyTown Housing initiative, which builds medium income homes in the place of dilapidated structures in the city. A single-family development

is in the early stages on the south side of the City of Burnet, as well as a large multi-family and singlefamily development south of Marble Falls near the Blanco County line. While the ghosts of communities like Oatmeal, Joppa, Lake Victor and Fairland loom on winding roads, other small towns in the county like Bertram, Granite Shoals and Cottonwood Shores are starting to prosper. Several residential developments have begun around the city of Bertram. The county’s two population centers are Marble Falls, the commercial hub, and Burnet, the county seat. Both have experienced exceptional growth in the past decade. On the southern end of the county a new Baylor Scott & White hospital saw completion in the summer of 2015, giving Burnet County multiple medical centers in its two

major cities. A variety of factors make continued growth inevitable. Although granite and other bedrock underlie much of the county, some of the Z[H[L»Z ÄULZ[ ]PUL`HYKZ OH]L sprung from its soil while challenging golf courses have been coaxed from arid locations elsewhere, notably PU HɊ\LU[ /VYZLZOVL )H` Inks Lake State Park, one of two distinguished state parks in the county, has seen a regular increase of visitors and plans to expand its facilities. Burnet County is the home of rich history and long-told legends dating back to the frontier days following the annexation of Texas to the United States in 1845. Some of its recognized landmarks bear witness to its early founders and settlers. After Texas became a state, federal government became responsible for the protection of settlers

from Native American raids. Several companies of Texas Rangers were stationed along the frontier and in December of 1847 a company commanded by Henry E. McCulloch established what became known as McCulloch’s Station, later to be named Fort Croghan, the third of four frontier forts established in the region. The site was named for Col. George Croghan who was a hero at the battle of Fort Stephenson in the War of 1812. The area along with a JYLLR ÅV^PUN [OYV\NO [OL area was commonly called Hamilton or Hamilton Valley for John Hamilton, who had a large plot of land there. The town was founded as Hamilton in 1852, when Burnet County was established. Because another town north of Lampasas was named Hamilton, the new settlement was renamed in

The sparkling facelift to the former GallowayHammond Recreation Center that’s now operated by the YMCA of neighboring Williamson County which brought its wildly successful and acclaimed programs for everyone from kids to senior citizens, has been enthusiastically receivedThe 51-acre HaleyNelson Park opened in 2013 and has been a sterling addition to Burnet’s roster of fun and exciting places for active kids and adults and outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy fresh air, sunshine, kids soccer and music concerts at its pavilion.

At the nexus of US 281 and SH 29, just down the road from the top of the Highland Lakes, Burnet continues to attrract people who want the convenience of nearby Austin without its accompanying hassle. Burnet remains the kind of Texas town where you can still drop by the local UL^ZWHWLY [V ZOV^ VɈ [OL Ă„ZO `V\ JH\NO[ HUK YLWSH` Friday night’s high school football game with someone you meet on the sidewalk downtown. Just to the east, business is still done in buildings that have occupied the Burnet County Courthouse square for more than a century. Guests sleep at a bed and breakfast once a stage stop, and restored steam engines chug into the train depot each weekend. Excellent public schools and a 25-bed Seton Highland Lakes Hospital are among outstanding

community facilities, which also include a public golf course and the YMCA YLJYLH[PVU JLU[LY VɈLYPUN everything from games HUK Z^PTTPUN [V Ă„[ULZZ programs. Its airport serves private aviators and is the base for the Highland Lakes Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force, whose vintage air show is one of the year’s big events along with the Bluebonnet Festival in the spring and the fair and rodeo. Although the Austin metropolis is creeping nearer, optimists believe it won’t disturb Burnet’s small town values centered on family life, schools, church and civic activities. By the way, it’s pronounced BURN-it, not Burr-NET!
