from the editor With the holidays fast approaching, it is high time the staff of Newport Naked gave thanks. We are thankful for our dedicated readers, our advertising partners, and all the outlets at which our magazine is made available to the public. We are thankful for our many contributors, who work so hard and put in so much time, for the beautiful dancers from the Island Moving Company, who have graced so many of our covers, and for the exquisite eye of photographer Peter Mellekas. We are humbled to be in our fifth year, pumping out lucky issue number thirteen. We are grateful for the many friends who have supported us along the way, and deeply appreciate the tolerant, artistic, diverse, and sophisticated community in which we live. We are thankful for being able to work, play, laugh, and love in one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

cooked. Add curry powder, nutmeg and saffron. Stir well and cook for about one minute to release the aromatics. Add four cups of broth (I prefer chicken, but vegetable broth may be used) and stir well. Add one can of pumpkin puree and whisk until the pumpkin is thoroughly blended. Reduce heat to low and cook until soup returns to a simmer about five minutes, taking care to whisk every 90 seconds to avoid scorching. When soup is simmering, add 1/2 cup of heavy cream and return to a simmer. Add salt to taste and serve immediately. As a nice option, garnish with crème fraiche or toasted pumpkin seeds.
n the next few issues Newport Naked will look at restaurants and clubs we have grouped together by neighborhood. We will travel down Broadway, go Downtown, visit Lower Thames, and head Uptown. Here we take a look at Broadway, the section that has seen, by far, the most change over the last couple decades. Only one of these establishments existed 20 years ago, and some of them were not even around as recently as 2010, when Tiger’s marriage was unraveling and the Deepwater Horizon was hemorrhaging oil into the Gulf. But they all contribute to a vigorous, lively neighborhood bursting with entrepreneurial spirit and local flavor. Our journey starts just off Washington Park at 1 Broadway, where the FASTNET PUB provides a touch of Ireland with great beer, fresh fish and chips, darts, billiards, ping pong, and authentic live Irish music. The place has a lot of character - and 10$ pitchers. Just across the street, at HOPE, you can do more than

sample the food and work your way through the distinctive drink list. What makes this place unique is how its basement space is utilized. During the week the room serves as a league-sanctioned pool hall, on weekends it morphs into a cover-free dance club, and on the final Sunday of every month it hosts comedy shows.

A few paces down the block, in a 200-year-old Colonial building, sits THE TAVERN ON BROADWAY. The Tavern features an eclectic menu (Portuguese Littlenecks, Korean spring rolls, el Cubano sandwich), powered by ingredients sourced from local farms and farmstands. To get an idea of what the kitchen is all about, google Chef Tim’s appearance on The Rhode Show, where he put together his Carne A LA Plancha. And for a more direct experience, you can sample ½ priced appetizers from 4-6 Monday through Saturday. Honeybush, Indian Spiced Chai, Lucky Dragon Hyson, Nutcracker Rooibos, Ayurvedic Total Body, and Lapsang Souchong. These are just some of the flavors you can savor at EMPIRE TEA & COFFEE. Empire has been going strong for over a decade now, and with 5,000 feet of space this original location hails as the largest coffeehouse in the state. This is more than enough to showcase their dizzying array of products, allowing room to spare for the devoted crowds that routinely gather to achieve a gentle high. Feel free to bring your laptop and get some work done while the caffeine courses through your system. POUR JUDGMENT comes next, providing tasty victuals and soothing libations at seemingly all times of the week. To revitalize yourself after a long Saturday night, hit Sunday brunch and match a Bloody Mary with the Crab Cake Benny, or a Bellini with a Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese and Caper Bagel. Head there any day for lunch and maybe try Executive Chef Timothy Sousa of The Tavern on Broadway.

the Portuguese Kale Soup and the Salmon BLT while washing the whole thing down with a draft – they have over a dozen on tap, including their own Pour Judgment IPA. Or show up for dinner and devour your choice of three different styles of steamed littlenecks followed by the Steak or Shrimp Tacos. The food can be had until midnight during the week, and till eleven on weekends, which is a nice thing to know because, in this town, finding a late-night meal can be challenging. Eat noodles. That’s the mantra of the BORU NOODLE BAR, located just a few steps further on our culinary and cultural stroll down Broadway. Such ramen inspired eateries are usually found only in larger metropolitan areas, so having one in our cozy little city is a real treat. Owners and chefs Casey Shea and Steve Lucier combine noodles, vegetables, and proteins in interesting ways, offering spicy miso, sesame chicken, seared tuna, curry, and short rib versions. Try the Crispy Brussels appetizer; it’s a neighborhood favorite. Because it is relatively new, you may not have sampled Boru. But a strong first year led to a recent expansion, ensuring they can accommodate you on your first visit. So go eat some freakin noodles. Next we take a small

detour, just a quick left onto Marlborough Street. MISSION may be an off Broadway production, but the kitchen delivers brilliant performances. All meat is ground on location and cooked to perfection, and many locals swear they had their best burger or dog inside these unassuming walls. The falafel also kicks ass. From Mission we return to Broadway and stroll a block or so down, passing across from City Hall and pulling adjacent to the middle school. SCRATCH KITCHEN AND CATERING is even newer than Boru, having opened its doors last spring. Local brother and sister team Kyle and Stef Bennett offer an exceptional breakfast and lunch menu designed to serve all tastes. Check out the selection on their website and tell me you don’t want some. They got Stuffed French Toast and Quiche. There are fifteen types of grilled cheese sandwiches (Reuben, Chili Dog, Duck Confit, French Dip, Thanksgiving, etc.). The gourmet wrap selection will make your mouth water. And full-on box lunches are available if you’re real hungry. They got unbelievable cookies too – baked from scratch. When I think of the next establishment along the road, THE CORNER CAFÉ, I think of lines. I drive through town all the time, and often see a queue of patient people waiting outside, especially for breakfast, which features one of the most diverse menus you will ever see. Those lines say it all. To get to the FIFTH ELEMENT you have to cross the street, returning to the same side as the Fastnet. But the Element wasn’t always just across the street. It was once across town, down Lower Thames. The original location was beloved (believe me, I lived two blocks away), but the new incarnation has managed to harness and magnify all the sophisticated charm and hospitality of the original. All the elements are present. There are flames in the wood fired pizza oven, water rushing down the bar mirrors, earth in the reclaimed wood that serves as the bar, and air bellowing from the steady stream of customers who call the place a second home. There are also great sounds, as the Element regularly hosts live music, including the Groove Merchants on Mondays. Go in and ask for a single malt before the show. The selection descends from the heavens, gliding down on a floating scotch and bourbon bar.
Back across the street is the SALVATION CAFÉ, the granddaddy of them all. Salvation is the longest tenured of all these establishments, having opened its doors back in 1991, when they were still mopping up the Exxon Valdez mess and Tiger Woods was fourteen. Owner Sue Lamond’s bold venture was the cornerstone to the eventual transformation on Broadway, though when asked about that time and the resultant changes, her feelings are a little ambivalent: “Everyone told me I was crazy to open in that neighborhood because it was considered a ‘bad’ neighborhood. Which is pretty funny now - but for me it meant a lot of freedom to evolve because it had so little value that no one cared what you did. We weren’t taken seriously at all. For better or worse we changed the perception of the neighborhood. But one thing I regret - I miss the old diversity and practicality like the hardware store. It was more like a real neighborhood than a ‘restaurant row’ back then.” If lines can be used to highlight the appeal of The Corner Café, longevity can be used to highlight Salvation’s. Salvation is just the first on a block packed with strong establishments. NOREY’S comes next, having opened its doors back in 2000. All these places offer a wide array of options, from food to drink to atmosphere and entertainment. So it is key that we focus on what makes each establishment unique, and one of Norey’s best features is the world-class beer list. Guess how many different craft beers you can enjoy in this warm and cozy establishment. . . then
guess a higher number, because you are probably wrong. Get down to Norey’s and see how many visits it takes you to try them all (hopefully it’s a lot). They also have an extensive wine list and full-bar, so any companions you might be travelling with will surely find an option that pleases. And if you are hungry try the pasta. They make it fresh every day. If Norey’s can please the tastes of any adventurous beer hound, it’s neighbor, MALT, is the go to place for the refined scotch enthusiast. Once again the selection is dizzying - I stopped counting the bottles. You can go real high end with a 21 year Balvenie, or keep it casual (but still in the legendary Speyside region of the Highlands), with a modest but respectable Aberlour. While your sampling some of Scotland’s finest, be sure to make room for the Malt Burger - it’s one of our town’s finest. The block comes to and end at the corner of Caleb Earl and Broadway, which is where you can, quite naturally, find CALEB AND BROAD, a fresh face on the scene

that was voted best new business of 2015. Owner Rich Willis has called his menu a “step up from bar food and a step down from fine dining”, and for many of us that is the sweet spot. Go get a feel for the place and its Caribbean inspired menu. Get your feet wet during the Monday night special, when all entrees are 10$. It’s an incredible deal for the Citrus Braised Short Ribs or the delectable Duck Confit (hollandaise, poached egg, spinach, garlic mash, ridiculous). The drinks are also pretty damn good. They even won a Bloody Mary competition. The food is great. The drinks are great. The prices are awesome. The atmosphere is terrific. And the staff was voted best staff by the staff itself. Go to the corner of Caleb and Broad and let them prove it. The PARLOR BAR AND KITCHEN closes off our stroll down Broadway’s restaurant row. You might think there could be nothing new to say about yet another entrant on the tour, but thankfully you’d be wrong. In addition to its unique American Fusion Cuisine, the Parlor is aiming to become one of the premier live
music venues on the Island. A new stage has just been built and an impressive list of headliners is coming to town. Have a bite to eat and a drink down the street before heading to the Parlor for some sweet sounds. Or better yet, save yourself a few steps and get it all in the same spot. Well, that concludes our little tour of Broadway dining, drinking, and nightlife, from address 1 to address 200. If this is not a section of town you typically visit, you should make it a priority to make its acquaintance. And if you already spend time in the area, but spend it in one place, you should blur your focus and expand your horizons. Play ping pong. See a comedy show. Try some Portuguese Littlenecks and sip some Bubble Tea. Use Pour Judgment. Eat Noodles. And make a great burger your Mission. Try something made from Scratch and join the Queue. Take the Fifth and get saved. Drink a beer you’ve never drank. Sip a scotch you’ve never sipped. Enjoy an acclaimed Bloody Mary and listen to a kickass band. Visit Broadway.

at To Live is a customized nutrition consulting company located right on Broadway. We’ve been on the Island close to 10 years. One of the biggest perks of our business is that you likely won’t have to pay for your appointment. We are providers with most health insurance companies, and they typically cover up to 100% of such costs. The majority of health insurance plans have some sort of nutrition or preventive benefits, and we can help you determine your coverage. Currently, about 90% of our clients have no out-of-pocket costs. Exciting, I know! Eat To Live is located at 195 Broadway, inside Renaissance Fitness. Paul Manning (owner of RF) and I have a shared passion for making health and nutrition affordable. So we did just that, putting our businesses under the same roof to create a onestop-shop for inexpensive health. For a small operation that doesn't do much of any advertising, we have managed to stay rather busy. There is no greater compliment than a referral, and that is how we have grown. Some of our personal trainers are training up to 25 clients a day, and it is gratifying to see so many people making incredible progress while taking advantage of our services. Nutrition appointments with our Registered Dietitians cover everything from weight loss, sports nutrition, GI issues, sugar addiction, heartburn, vitamin deficiency, restless leg syndrome, candida, herbal remedies, eating disorders, high cholesterol, diabetes, prenatal, hypertension, fatigue, and just about anything nutrition related. F
our hundred years ago Miantonomi Park was Narragansett Indian territory, and the hill, the highest natural point on the island, served as the seat of power for Chief Miantonomi. In 1637, two years before Newport’s official founding, English colonists purchased the land and used that hill as a lookout. 30 years later they built a beacon on the spot. And a century after that, as the Revolutionary War raged and the land was possessed in turn by Colonial, British, and French troops, a series of fortifications were constructed. The remnants of these defensive efforts can still be seen today. For much of the 19th century the land was used as a picnic area, until 1881 when Anson Stokes purchased the plot for farming. By the early twentieth Century Frederick Law Olmstead Jr., appreciating the scenic and historical significance of the spot, suggested that the land be acquired, and in 1921 the Stokes family deeded over 30 acres to the city. In 1923 the 150-foot hill was proclaimed a war memorial, and in 1929 the tower was erected. The work was
done by McKim, Mead & White, the prestigious architectural firm responsible for the Rhode Island State House, a revered structure that boasts the thirdlargest self-supporting marble dome on the planet (St. Peter’s, Taj Mahal). Once completed, the 80-foot tower soared above the island, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. Today visitors can enter the stone structure, climb the winding metal staircase, and step out onto an open-air observation deck studded with battlements. The view is stunning. There are spectacular panoramas of the city, the bridge, and the bay, and on a clear day you can sometimes see Providence and even Block Island. Unfortunately, the tower is only available to the public on rare occasions, so keep it in mind and plan ahead. Just this past September it was open every Sunday, and Newport Naked was able to visit last Memorial Day. Your next chance will likely be Veteran’s Day in November, so mark your calendar.

pulling lobster out on Georges Bank, the raised area of Atlantic sea floor that, for 400 years, has been the life-blood of North Eastern fisheries all the way up to Nova Scotia. But soon he was taking another step forward, acquiring his own boat, the Elizabeth Ann, skipping the 150-mile trek to the Banks, and chasing the crustaceans a little closer to home. It was an incident with Elizabeth Ann that led to his next endeavor. At the end of one season, while trying to get his boat hauled out of the water and transported, he was told the wait was five weeks. Five weeks? The company was that backlogged? It sounded like a business that was begging for competition. A year later he had his own hauling license and was making his first foray into a concern he is still involved in today, almost thirty years later.
At the same time Bill had infiltrated another aspect of the local economy. He was driving a truck for Chaves Oil Company, and once again thinking he could provide such a service himself. He had a lot of things going at once. The lobster boat was chugging, other boats were getting hauled, and oil was getting delivered. But Bill was still not satisfied. He rented Brown and Howard Wharf from Joe Paolino Sr. and began consolidating his various interests. Eventually he found himself working a little further down Thames, on the wharf that would become Casey’s Marina, hauling and providing gas service from a building that had formerly been a fish and trap company. Then, about twenty years ago, George Mendoza made the forward-thinking Casey a generous offer. He could run the property free of charge for a couple years, until he could

manage a bank loan and buy the thing outright. And that is exactly what Bill did. Over the last two decades Casey’s Marina has become an economic pillar of the local community. They haul boats as big as 50 feet long, mostly around the island but also across New England and all the way down to Florida. They also provide home heating oil and marine diesel, and you’ve probably seen the big green truck motoring around town. Then there is the dock space. The marina hosts all kinds of boats, seasonal and transient, including 200-foot behemoths with 14-foot drafts. Of course, it has not been all business. Bill kept himself fit over the years by participating in triathlons and iron man competitions, multi-leg endurance events that 99.9 percent of humans avoid like plague because there is at least one task they can’t – or don’t want to – overcome (I’ve got two, the running and the swimming). But all the physical fitness could not prevent cancer from rearing its ugly head. Bill was diagnosed ten years ago, and had to face an opponent tougher than endurance tests and business challenges. As you might expect, he fought through it. In fact, it was in the midst of the initial struggle that he purchased one of those toys mentioned at the beginning of this article. Fresh out of cancer surgery and ten days before the start of chemotherapy, Bill was cruising the Internet and came upon something he had always wanted. And at an uncertain point in life - when he was wondering just how long or short that life might be – he said screw it and decided to make an acquisition. Within days he had flown out to Northern Michigan, just near the Canadian border, to check out a Blue Bird Wanderlodge motorhome. These high end, Class A recreational vehicles were the top of the line and in a class by themselves for many years. Their sleek, retro design and first-class amenities made them beloved second homes, and such notables as Johnny Cash and Jimmy Carter have owned them. And Bill, in between surgery and treatment, was about to join that club. He had originally
thought the vehicle was black, but when he laid eyes on the gleaming two-tone silver and ‘Casey’s Marina Green’, he knew it was fate. Shortly after landing he was on the road, driving back to New England in his very own Blue Bird. You may have seen it around town. It might be bigger than the oil truck. A more recently acquired toy is a sweet little houseboat. He bought it in Connecticut last February, for the princely price of a dollar, and had it barged over in July. It now floats at the docks on Long Wharf, which Bill also runs, and he is patiently renovating - an understandably lengthy process considering the hundred-penny price tag. The houseboat is actually part of a little downsizing Mr. Casey has done lately, as he has sold off a couple private properties on the island. But he owns another home and a boat down in Florida, and constantly travels back and forth between the two regions. It seems that life is pretty good. Business is thriving and Bill, after years of hard work, risks, and challenges, is still having plenty of fun. A decade after diagnosis he is cancer free and living nicely on land, on water, and on the road. Maybe next he’ll buy an airplane. Or a Space Station. Or a green submarine.

Circuit Training:
1.
When Cardio & Strength Training Collide by Madison Deleone, CPT 2.
Circuit training is a very popular method of physical training in which you perform a series of exercises, with minimal rest in between, for a set amount of repetitions. The exercises can vary depending on the client’s goals, but are usually a sequence of high intensity aerobic and resistance moves that require anywhere from no equipment to a full gym. Because there are so many different ways to approach circuit training, trainers often customize it to fit each unique client's goals and ability level.
3.
Example For the sake of this article, let’s look at the structure of one of the workouts we would perform at my Beach Body Fit Camp (June-September at Easton's Beach in Newport). The workout lasts 45 minutes (including warm-up and cool-down) and the only equipment we use is a beach rock of your choice. There are 12 different exercises that target all muscle groups and rotate between upper body/core, lower body, and total body plyometric/cardio moves. The twelve moves are broken down into three circuits containing 4 moves each. We complete all four moves twice, with a small break while transitioning to the next circuit.
Benefits Increases Physical Fitness: The pace and intensity of circuit training gets your heart rate up and keeps it up throughout the duration of your workout. Because you are transitioning so quickly between different moves, you never get bored or burnt out on one redundant motion - you are constantly challenging yourself and utilizing different muscle groups to involve and work your whole body. When you consistently work circuit training into your fitness routine you will start to develop increased endurance, strength, power, agility, speed, and balance while increasing lean muscle and decreasing excess body fat. • Saves Time and Money: Circuit training allows you to reap the benefits of both cardio-vascular exercise and resistance training in a shorter amount of time. I like to picture it this way: You are essentially taking a 30 minute cardio workout and a 30 minute resistance workout and layering them on top of each other to get an hour's worth of work in half the time. The beauty of circuit training is that you can design a whole workout using only your own body weight. This means you can take your workout anywhere and save yourself money (no gym membership or fancy equipment needed), time (no commute necessary), and hassle (you can do it in your pj's if you want to!)
Try it at home! Here is a quick mini-circuit for you to try at home. Make sure you warm up first with 5-10 minutes of light cardio (for example a walk or jog) and some light stretching.
Circuit 1 (Complete Circuit 1 twice before moving on to circuit 2) 1) Upright Crunch Extensions (10-15 reps) - Starting in a seated position, use your core to raise both feet off the floor, crunching knees in toward your chest and then extending them out. 2) Alternating Lunges (16-20) - Starting in a neutral standing position, lunge forward with one foot, making sure your knee does not extend past your toes. Return to start and switch legs. 3) Russian Twists (15-20 reps) - Starting in a seated position while holding a medicine ball in close to your chest, raise both feet off the floor and use your core to rotate the ball to the left and then back across your body to the right. 4) Power Squats (10-12 reps) - Stand in a neutral position, bend your knees as if you are sitting back into a chair, and use your legs to explode up. Land with soft knees and repeat. Take a 1-2 minute break before moving on to Circuit 2.

5) Commandos (15-20) - Starting in a high plank position, lower your body down (one arm at a time) into a fore-arm plank position and then press back up (one arm at a time) into a high plank. 6) Lateral Walking Lunges (15-20) - Starting in a neutral position, lunge to the side with your right leg and then squat down by bending your knees and sending your butt back like you are sitting into a chair. Bring your left leg to meet your right and then repeat, “walking” to the side. 7) Ab Bicycle - (15-20) Start on your back with your elbows bent and hands behind your head, with your knees curled into your chest. Curl your upper body up using your core and rotate so that your right elbow drives across your body to meet your left knee, then switch to the opposite side. 8) Twisting Jacks - (15-20) Starting in a staggered stance with your right foot forward and upper body rotated so that your left arm is over your right knee, hop and switch your legs in mid air to land in a left foot forward staggered stance with your upper body rotated to the left. Ten Reasons to Adopt a Pet In case “Because it’s the right thing to do” isn’t enough Courtesy of The Humane Society of the United States
Thinking of adding a pet to your family? Here are ten reasons to adopt your new best friend. 1. Because you'll save a life. A shelter pet is more than one in a million—she's one in 2.7 million. That's the number of adoptable dogs and cats who are still euthanized each year in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people adopt. The number of euthanized animals could be reduced dramatically if more people adopted pets instead of buying them. When you adopt, you save your animal and open up shelter space for another animal who might need it. 2. Because you'll get a great animal. Animal shelters and rescue groups are brimming with happy, healthy pets just waiting for someone to take them home. Most shelter pets ended up there because of a human problem like a move or a divorce, not because the animal did anything wrong. 3. Because you'll get a great bargain. When you adopt a pet, the cost of spay/neuter, first vaccinations and sometimes microchipping is usually included in the adoption price, which means you've scored a major deal—a fuzzy deal who will thank you with kisses or purrs for years to come. 4. Because of the bragging rights. No one needs to see another selfie—unless it’s a selfie of you with the adorable cat you just adopted, like the hero you are! Adopt a pet, post the pictures and let the love (likes) roll in. 5. Because it's one way to fight puppy mills. You're too smart to get a dog from a pet store or online seller—you might as well buy direct from a puppy mill. Puppy mills are "factory style" breeding facilities that put profit above the welfare of dogs. Animals from puppy mills are housed in shockingly poor conditions with improper medical care, and are often very sick
and behaviorally troubled as a result. The moms of the puppies are kept in cages to be bred over and over for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever joining a family. And after they're no longer profitable, breeding dogs are simply discarded—either killed, abandoned or sold at auction. Most puppies in pet stores and sold online come from puppy mills. The dogs are sold to unsuspecting consumers in pet stores, over the Internet and through classified ads. Puppy mills will continue to operate until people stop supporting them. By adopting a pet, you can be certain you aren't giving them a dime. 6. Because your decor will thank you. Many of the pets from shelters and rescues are already housetrained, which means you’re not only saving a pet’s life, you may be saving your rug. 7. Because all pets are good for your health, but an adopted pet is good for your self-esteem. Not only do animals give you unconditional love, but they have been shown to be psychologically, emotionally and physically beneficial. Caring for a companion animal can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment and lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation in all age groups. And when you adopt, you can also feel proud about helping an animal in need. 8. Because you’re environmentally responsible. You recycle your paper and plastic so it doesn’t end up in landfills, and you know that recycled materials make all sorts of things. A “recycled” pet can make something even better: She can make you happy. 9. Because The Shelter Pet Project will make it super-easy. We like easy. Go to the Shelter Pet Project to find pets near you, of every size, color, temperament and breed. You want an orange cat who likes ear-scratches on alternate Tuesdays? You can probably find one. 10. Because you'll change a homeless animal's whole world. And get a new best friend in the bargain. Seriously, what could be better than that?

y Land Rover journey started back in 2001 when I purchased my pre-owned 1999 Discovery 2, which I named Berutha. It was love at first sight and my Land Rover craze had begun. I passed Berutha on to a good friend a couple years back, and recently acquired a newer model, called a LR3, from down south. With its 300hp engine, larger capacity interior, glass roof ceiling, off-road accessories, and fancy electronics, it was a no brainer. My wife and I love the truck, but I think I love it a little more. She calls it the other woman because I spend so much time cleaning, maintaining and upgrading her. Yes, it’s a her. No name yet but I’ll take suggestions. I’ve outfitted her with new off-road Hankook Dynapro AT tires on 18” rims plus full-sized spare, an ultra-gauge computer, halo drl fog lights, 288 watt LED roof bar light, double jerry can holder, aluminum floor for my expo rack, shovel retainer, extended suspension height rods and a top notch storage unit in the boot, which I custom built for carrying all my off-road and emergency gear. Ok, fast forward to Oct 25th 2014 at 7am in the morning. It is my first official day taking the LR3 off-roading. I’ve been preparing for a long time, and am really excited to see the off-road capabilities of my girl. I will no longer be called a poser or a mall crawler.
M Mike Camara tackles a uphill climb in his 1999 Disco 2.
The author traversing a down hill boulder strewned slope in his LR3 with the guidance of Rich Moody.
My first stop is at Rover’s Special Vehicles, an independent Land Rover shop in Jamestown, RI, to meet up with the proprietor, Rich Moody. Rich is also my mechanic, off-road driving instructor, and buddy on this next leg of my journey. When you pull up to his shop, its like pulling into Land Rover Mecca. The lot is filled with mouth-watering eye candy from older Series 2’s, Defenders, Discoveries, Range Rovers, and even some nonLand Rover vehicles. Land Rover enthusiasts can really appreciate the vehicles Rich has collected. For over 23 years John Gregory operated the building, at 65 North Road, as an auto mechanic garage. Then Rich assumed control in 2001 and turned it into an independent Land Rover shop, but

Rich Moody, Owner of Rover’s Specialty Vehicles in Jamestown, RI working on a Landrover Defender.
John still wrenches there and works on domestic and import vehicles. What’s so unique about Rich is that he occasionally works with the USSF (United States Special Forces), helping train them to drive defensive, high speed, and low speed while off-road. He instructs them in a wide variety of vehicles, from large supply trucks to small utility vehicles and to Land Rovers, which fall somewhere in between. He also builds the USSF specific Land Rover modified vehicles for special operations, about which he is not at liberty to speak. Rich was born in Lincolnshire, England and moved to Kuwait City at a young age. The family business had him traveling all over the continent, as his father ran a Seismic survey company that helped oil companies find their precious liquid gold. Rich spoke Farsi as a first language, but his parents wanted him and his older brother to learn English. So when opportunity knocked his family moved to the USA. His father took a job in Houston, helping oil companies find wells while Rich attended school and brushed up on his English. A year later, at the age of 10, he was in England attending St. James Boarding School. His love of Rovers began two years later when he started helping his father
modify the company’s Land Rovers for surveying work. He got his license at the tender age of 12, and the first vehicle he drove, one guess… wait for it… was a Land Rover. I guess the driving test back then was pretty easy compared to today. Drive straight, brake, left-turn, come back, done,

Mike Camera drives a 1999 Land Rover Disco 2 named “Black Cat”, and Igor Konovalenko, Rich’s employee, drives a 1967 Ford Bronco that looks like a cow on steroids. From his fleet of vehicles Rich chooses to take his 2004 Disco 2, which is all decked out with a Warn winch, front and back steel bumpers, diff guards, sump protector, and roof rack with PIAA lights. We jump into our respective vehicles and head out on route 138 to Arcadia State Park, which sprawls into Richmond, Exeter, Hopkinton, and West Greenwich, Rhode Island. On the trailhead We finally arrive at the trailhead and decide that Rich should go first with myself, being a novice and all, following Rich about to descend down a hill of boulders in his Disco 2.

Gravity, trees, and rocks are no bueno, but it’s exhilarating when you overcome an obstacle. On the way down I did manage to dent my fuel tank skid plate on an invisible rock, but was able to knock it back out when I got home - don’t worry honey no harm no foul. The rest of the afternoon brought more trails, water crossings, and some light mud. Toward the end, at a water crossing, we ran into a couple of guys driving an older Jeep Cherokee. entertainment pieces from a variety of designers, some local and some more nationally known. I try to keep a core group of artists that I can count on for the consistency of their work and quality of their craftsmanship.” The overall process gives the customer the chance to aid in the design of the piece; whether it is an anticipated engagement ring or a simple birthday gift, everything is made to order and aimed to satisfy. Many of Kevin Duris’ returning customers appreciate the fact that their purchases are one of a kind, that the same piece will not be seen decorating the wrist, neck, or finger of another. This sets the studio apart from others here in Newport, as does the concerted efforts the artist makes to have his work stand out from the rest. He states, “I try to accentuate that sensibility by adding hammered or textured finish to many of the pieces. A ‘mark of the hand’ should be prevalent in every design, whether in some sort of engraving, stamping, hammer mark, patina, or textured finish.” He goes on to say that his studio can also be discreet, a valuable commodity in this small town. Sometimes the most fascinating piece he is developing remains a closely held secret for weeks or even months. “This is just another interesting part of the business,” Duris exclaims. Kevin often rotates the displays by creating a themed show revolving around new materials and fresh styles rather than any one particular artist. He wants to highlight different designers and offer his customers diversity. This summer ended with a showcase titled “The Living Jewel: Pearls.” It featured South Sea and Tahitian pearls, along with a wide variety of freshwater cultured pearl jewelry. This October all of the artists will showcase new pieces using tourmalines, semiprecious stones and gems varying in color and luminance. The studio will also celebrate their first winter with their neighbors, Blink and Mokka Café, with a tree lighting and holiday show in the Thames Street courtyard. Duris recognizes Blink as an exemplary counterpart to this courtyard collaboration of artistry. “The synergy between Blink and our shop is beneficial to both us and our customers. Alexander Nesbitt shows work of other artists as well as his own award winning photography at Blink. In one location, our customers can check out over a dozen different artists between the two connected spaces in one shopping experience.” I encourage my readers to take advantage of this new artistic alliance that has reignited a light on lower Thames Street. Duris Studios opens its doors most days from 10am to 6pm and on Tuesdays by appointment only. Visit them at www.durisstudios.com or on their Facebook page.

Newport, which was where I met my amazing wife and fellow artist, Deborah Peart. I cannot thank her enough for her constant support and keeping me driven through periods of self-doubt. After some solid training in the Newport shop, I left to work for and with a variety of other jewelers and designers in both large and small shops, most notably Didi Suydam, Peter Diepenbrock, William Drake, and other jewelers that were generous with their knowledge and spirit. While always working a full time job, I tried to continually create my own work in a private studio. I had workspaces in the corners and basements of apartments, then studios in Fall River and Narragansett. Some spaces were huge and some small, but they were all cold in the winter.” Duris’ hard work and perseverance, along with Deborah’s infallible faith in his art, most definitely paid off with the gold mine of a gallery he later founded on Thames. This one is not as cold as the others, for it is complete with the heat of the offseason sunlight. Although Franklin Street provided a good space for wholesale manufacturing and developing a strong retail customer base, it was obvious to Duris and Deborah that a new location was crucial for expanding the business. The new studio offers better lighting, more space to produce custom pieces, and the ability to display work from other artists. Duris clarifies, “We are so excited to be a part of the new lower Thames St. here in Newport. The influx of shops and the vibrant dining scene is the perfect location for our jewelry design studio and gallery. The new space is divided in half, one side for making jewelry, the other for selling. Accented with locally reclaimed lumber and jewelry cases made by local furniture designer Ryan Baird, the gallery is open and spacious, while still feeling warm and inviting. The back workshop can be seen from the gallery side with an almost ‘open kitchen’ design that allows our customers to see some of the process in action. I think having that connection is really important to a lot of people, seeing that their custom piece is being made right in house and does not leave the shop.” Other designers such as Petri Kymlander and Laura Blanc are featured in the glass cases of Duris Studios. Their work corresponds beautifully with his own vision. In the future, Kevin would like to add to the showroom’s dynamic by introducing more sculpture and fine art. Currently decorating the back wall are large seascapes done by local painter Robert Sabin. Altogether, these artists create pieces that are memorable, unique, and specific. Duris continues, “We do our own lost-wax casting in house and can go directly from a sketch to a completed piece of jewelry all within our studio. We offer well-crafted

he eerie silence of the darkened stage is broken like a bolt of lightning cracking open the midnight sky. The petite silhouette explodes exponentially, leaping to the front of the stage, landing in an impossibility wide crouch, guitar slung low. A tsunami of multi-colored hair slices through the air at whiplash-speed as the opening riff washes over the crowd in a tidal wave of distortion. Gail Greenwood was chosen by the Rock 'N Roll gods to bring forth the thunder. A kinetic force-of-nature, her energy is as infectious as it is inspiring. For over three decades she's cultivated a career that's taken her around the world, from clubs to stadiums and back again. A straight-edged vegan, she has defied Rock 'N Roll stereotypes and burned gender-bias conventions to the ground. In this issue, Gail takes on a tour of the musical adventure she's lived so far. Growing up in Barrington, it was at a family get-together that an eight-year-old Gail would first be bitten by the music bug. And it drew blood. "I had a cousin who played Folk music. We went to his house, I think after a funeral. He was

playing guitar and we were all sitting on the floor, and I was so thrilled to be hearing music. It was my first time hearing the guitar. I had a glass of lemonade with ice. I was biting down on the ice cubes in time to the music and, I was so into it, I broke the glass in my mouth. That was my first Punk Rock moment." As adolescence nears, childhood memories fade. But for Gail, the image of a guitar player commanding the attention of an adoring audience would remain. That brief glimpse into her musical future was soon realized on Christmas Day, 1973. "I got my first guitar, an acoustic. I think my mom was mad that my dad had spent so much on it. I believe it was $24." She adds, "With pick." Her formative high school years found Gail playing guitar and baritone horn in the marching band, and resisting the lure of the masses. While other teenagers were listening to the BEE GEES and DONNA SUMMER, and doing The Hustle, Gail had a more evolved musical palette. "I was into Funk. PARLIAMENT, OHIO PLAYERS, EARTH WIND & FIRE. It was the era of Disco but I wasn't into that." For Gail, the rhythm

BONEYARD soldiered on, pioneering the notorious Vingi Building as the first band to rehearse there. The historic mill would go on to become ground-zero for Providence Rock bands in the nineties. "The place became like a war zone. Every other band moved in, parties were moving in, bands having shows in their spaces. It got really crazy. I felt sort of bad and responsible for opening the door to that whole thing." Eventually, seduced by the Newport surf, Gail and Chil would relocate to the Island, renting a house in Middletown. Christened the Rock 'N Roll Control Center, it would serve as the base of operations for BONEYARD, as well as Gail and Chil's future musical endeavors. By then the band had augmented the lineup, with Gene focusing on vocals and a new guitar player getting added to the mix. "We got Chris Knox to play guitar. He was phenomenal, still is. So innovative. I learned a lot from Knoxy." Rock 'N Roll bands are like gangs; their strength lies in their unity. work and told me Sluggo quit the band. I almost threw up. I hadn't felt that loss before. I knew it was the end, it was really sad. I actually thought it was the end of my music career." Gail had seen Tanya Donelly play with her band THROWING MUSES back when she was in the DAMES, but didn't know her personally. Tanya had since parted ways with the MUSES to focus on her own songwriting and, in 1991, formed BELLY. The band released the Slow Dust EP, which reached #1 on the UK Indie charts, and started to gain momentum as Alternative Rock was beginning to make its way into the mainstream. After the recording of their fulllength debut, 1993's Star, bass player Fred Abong left the band. With Tanya's desire to enhance her dream-pop hooks with a harder edge, as well as a female backing vocalist, a window of opportunity had opened. "Out of the blue, Tanya called me. They auditioned me in my own basement. I made coffee and cookies." After securing the BELLY gig, Gail returned to the woodshed. "I had to relearn how to play bass. I'd been playing guitar in BONEYARD for many years, and it's another instrument." Any apprehension she may have had about musically transitioning from the hard-rocking BONEYARD to the more pop-oriented BELLY would quickly vanish. "They gave me a copy of Star and it was so complex and so original, and it rocked a lot harder than I thought it would. Our first show was at a college in Manchester. It was sold out and there were screaming throngs, I thought, 'Yeah I could do this. This is fun.'" BELLY would spend the rest of '93 on the road, touring the U.S. and Europe with Alternative Rock-radio staples RADIOHEAD and THE CRANBERRIES. The single Feed the Tree topped the U.S. Modern Rock charts and the video received massive airplay on MTV, earning two nominations for that year's MTV Video Music Awards. The band would come face to face with Alt-Rock's infiltration into the mainstream when, in early '94, BELLY was nominated for two Grammy Awards: Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album. "We knew we weren't gonna win, someone told us we didn't get it, but we went anyway. I loved every minute of it. The Warner Brothers after-party was at the Museum of Natural History, where they have all the giant taxidermy. I was wearing a gold lamĂŠ dress and some platform 1970's shoes I'd gotten at a flea market, and I had spray painted them gold with Krylon. Somewhere there's a picture of me, with some chick from Baywatch looking down [disgustedly] at my flea market shoes." Having had breakthrough critical and commercial success with Star, BELLY rode a wave of high expectations into Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas to record its followup. With legendary Producer Glyn Johns [LED ZEPPELIN,
BEATLES, ROLLING STONES, to name a few] at the helm, the band entered the studio to lay down their sophomore effort, King. "I might be the only musician in the world that literally cannot listen to ten seconds of the BEATLES, STONES, or the WHO. Just not my taste, that's all. So his amazing pedigree maybe didn't intimidate me as much as it should have. I think that helped me in the studio. He was a stern taskmaster and, yes, he did have an ego. We did all the basic tracks live so if someone messed up you ALL had to do it over again. Multiple takes. But we were very well prepared. He definitely didn't put up with bullshit, but he could be warm and he did have great stories. He told me to think about playing like 'Wymie' [ROLLING STONES bass player Bill Wyman], pluck the string gently and still have it make great power. And that advice has stuck with me today." In early '95 BELLY delivered King, a well-balanced record of expertly crafted songs that saw the band both fine-tune their glimmery dream-pop hooks and intensify their sound with a darker edge. King came out to critical acclaim and the band hit the promotional trail with great vigor. In April, the band landed not only a feature but the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, a unique distinction that only a select few artists will ever be able to claim. "We had done tons of photo shoots, lots of magazines, but that was really a different level of stress. We probably made it more stressful than it should have been. All I see when I look at that picture is the stubble on my legs. They didn't airbrush us, which I guess to some degree is a compliment." BELLY spent the next eighteen months on the road, touring the world in support of King, headlining in the U.S., playing the summer festival circuit, and joining REM for their European tour. While King sold fairly well, it was never able to meet or exceed the heights that Star had reached and was considered a commercial disappointment. Shortly after the conclusion of their year-and-a-half-long trek, a road-weary Tanya quietly disbanded BELLY. "After BELLY broke up, again, I thought it was the end of my Rock career. And then brrring, Donita Sparks called." Notorious L.A. Grunge-Grrrl's L7 were in New York and looking for a bass player. A recommendation from Gail's old friend Gina from the LUNACHICKS put the two camps in touch. Gail met up with Donita in Brooklyn and the two hit it off. "When they called me to join them I dropped every single
