Pagosa’s own Queen Bee “Without using the stabilizing agents found in most commercial products, it’s challenging to make lotion; temperature, humidity, and the melting point all impact your final result, and those things change all the time,” Lynne explained. “People aren’t used to using simple pure oils, but they are typically free of chemical additives which are needed to bind the water to the fats in lotions. They are much more hydrating, and you are getting 100% chemical-free moisture.” She encourages you to look on your bottles and read the ingredients. If you don’t recognize them, you might consider switching to organics.
ynne Killey has created quite the buzz around her Queen Bee organic line of skin care products. It all started back in 2003 when Lynne wanted to make a few products for herself. She messed around with formulas and made some fun products including bath salts and lip balms. Lynne started gifting friends with some of her creations and unwittingly created demand for more. Queen Bee was formally launched, offering botanicals that nourish your skin and spirit. All Queen Bee products are made by hand, using natural and organic ingredients. The Queen Bee motto, “made with love,” represents the philosophy of founder and president Lynne Killey, each bottle or jar of product is made with attention to quality ingredients, harmony with nature, and care for the people using them. Early on, as Lynne discovered that you had to have a hazardous materials license in order to obtain the chemicals used in most commercial beauty products. At that point Lynne made a commitment to use organic ingredients in her line, even though the production process would be more difficult and more expensive.
Vitamin K Serum Nourish your skin with the power of ten pure flower and plant botanicals naturally infused with high dose vitamins. This redness reducing, capillary strengthening Vitamin K Serum is like a big organic salad for your skin.
Lynne embarked on an eye opening journey that involved lots of research and becoming Aveda-trained and licensed esthetician. She can be found brewing up skin care at the spa most days, and spends a lot of her time enjoying life in Pagosa. All of her products are formulated and manufactured here in town with the help of a network of worker bees. Queen Bee has a gorgeous facial studio here in Pagosa. You can book a facial with her or get a personalized skin care consultation! Visit QueenBeePagosa.com for directions, online booking, and spa menu.

THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME: SMOKE, STEAM AND STEEL
T
he Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has been carrying passengers by coal-fired steam locomotives across the Rocky Mountains since 1880, and 2021 is going to be better than ever with six exciting new ticket options to make this bucket-list railroad adventure fit every schedule. Voted in 2020 by the readers of USA Today to be “the best train ride in America,” the Cumbres & Toltec is the highest, longest and most authentic steam train in the nation. Owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico, this non-profit railroad is a National Historic Landmark that moves – burrowing through tunnels and steaming over trestles as it navigates through 64 miles of off-thegrid wilderness, chugging along through unforgettable panoramas of forest and mountains at a stately speed of 12 mph. It’s a perfect family activity. Kids, parents and grandparents all love trains. It’s an ideal multigeneration adventure where you can safely move around the train, ride in an outdoor gondola car, visit the snack car, look for wildlife and wildflowers, and listen for steam whistles that send messages from the engineers back to the conductor. All full-day train rides include a delicious hot lunch where you get off the train and dine at scenic Osier Station, digging into tasty roast turkey or meatloaf, hearty sides and pies and cakes for dessert.
New in 2021 are easy ticket options
The “Chama All Aboard!” leaves from nearby Chama, NM at 10 a.m., crosses the railroad’s two highest trestles, and steams up a 4% grade along the edge of a cliff past Windy Point to the top of Cumbres Pass, 10,015 feet above sea level. Bring a light jacket, even in summer! After a hot lunch and panoramic views at Osier Station, the train returns to Chama at 4:05 p.m. Along the way, look for the water tower that was built just for Indiana Jones, so he could swing around it in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
For those with less time, you can park and join the train at the top of Cumbres Pass, the highest point reached by any steam train in North America, and hop aboard the “Cumbres Express.” Leaving at 11:10 p.m., you’ll clickity-clack around Tanglefoot Curve and over 137-foot high Cascade Trestle to Osier for a yummy lunch before returning to Cumbres Pass at 2:45 p.m. What could be more romantic than waiting at the Old West-style Chama Station for the whistle of the train at High Noon? Every Friday from June 11 to Oct. 24, 2021, the “Chama High Noon” train will leave at 12 p.m. and return at 2:30 p.m., steaming out to Cumbres and back.
History on Wheels in 2021
For rail buffs, nothing will ever match the first opportunity to ride the new San Juan & New Mexico Express! Pulled by the newly restored 1883 engine No. 168 (one of only two of its class left on the planet) this all historic train will have authentic wood Denver & Rio Grande passenger cars and limited departures from Antonito, CO. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended.
Antonito Departures
If your travels take you east, there will also be exciting departures from Antonito, CO. The “Antonito All Aboard!” leaves at 10 a.m., curls around Whiplash Curve and Phantom Curve, passes through Mud and Rock Tunnels, and along the lip of Toltec Gorge, before arriving at Osier to meet the Chama Train for lunch. The train then returns to the Antonito Depot, arriving at 4:40 PM. For those with less time, there will also be special Sunday excursions from May 29 to Sept. 12, 2021, on the “Antonito Express!” that leaves Antonito Depot at 11 a.m., steams to Big Horn and returns to Antonito at 2:30 p.m. Experience the historic and storied American West on this trip as you explore the high desert country of Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid and maybe even Matt Dilllon and Chester.
MAKE RESERVATIONS!
With COVID seating restrictions still in place, tickets will be limited in 2021. Don’t be left at the station! Please check schedules and make reservations in advance at www.cumbrestoltec.com and please join us in 2021 and help preserve historic railroading and coal-fired steam locomotives in the Rockies.

Pagosa Baking Company was barely a dream when Kathy Keyes and Kirsten Skeehan made their escape from Washington DC, in 1996, driving an RV and with plans to spend a year exploring the United States. But Kathy had discovered her passion long before the two of them met in DC. “I started loving baking when I was a little kid. I got my first sourdough starter when I was 11 years old. My folks brought back one of those packets from San Francisco, so I kind of developed a love for sourdough when I was a kid. And I kept that going for a long time. I didn’t do much bread; I did mostly biscuits and pancakes and quick things.” (FYI. You can purchase your own sourdough starter at the bakery.) “And I wanted to go into food, but my parents were set on me going to college. So I ended up studying nutrition and food science. And once I graduated, I was always doing something food oriented; making cakes for local restaurants, that kind of thing. Then I won a scholarship to attend a professional pastry class… and at the same time I started working at a European style bakery…” During their 1996 road trip, they visited a small bakery in a small town called Pagosa Springs. The bakery — called The Rolling Pin — was for sale. “It was outside of our price range, and it was a little more mature than we felt we could manage at that time…” Kirsten explained. But after a year on the road, they had fallen in love with rural America, and Colorado in particular, so they sold their house in DC and packed everything into a Uhaul, headed for a rented house in Pagosa Springs. Kathy’s first Colorado baking job was in Telluride, at The Peaks Resort restaurant. “That was great training for high altitude baking,” Kathy explained. “Telluride is even higher than Pagosa Springs, so it was even trickier there. Lucky thing, too… because I had been baking like crazy at home, trying to figure out how to adjust for the altitude...
“And also, the customers didn’t get to enjoy the wonderful smell of bread baking.” By 2004, the couple had saved up enough money to move the kitchen to Pagosa Street. And that, says Kirsten, is when the business really took off. The menu was expanded to include soups, quiches, and various breakfast and lunch items — and the bakery finally began to smell like a bakery. The rest, as they say, is history. Except for 2020, of course. As the coronavirus pandemic unfolded in Colorado, Governor Jared Polis ordered restaurants closed in hopes of containing the virus. Suddenly, every restaurant in the state was faced with quickly developing a “take-out only” business model. “We closed down for just a couple of days in March, and we were just strategizing. How are we going to do this? WE started selling out of our side window, but it was really challenging because the weather wasn’t great yet, we didn’t have an awning, and our staff at the time were really short — it was hard for them to get things out the window to customers,” Kathy laughed. “And it was cold inside,” Kirsten added. “We had all the windows open for ventilation, and the staff was alternating days, to keep exposure everyone’s limited. And we were changing as the guidance changed. “And the guidance was constantly changing. Finally we were able to find enough masks so we could have a full crew…” Kathy continued. “We did outdoor seating all summer… but no indoor seating. And we’re wondering how that will play out, even after the pandemic is over? Because we’ve added more retail inside… and there are opportunities, I would say. “Like, we had those ceramic crocks made, branded with our logo… with packets of sourdough starter. And I just love that...”
“And we were really putting on weight.” she laughed. The next phase came when Kathy created her own commercial kitchen at home and began selling her sourdough breads at various Pagosa outlets. Then a shop on Pagosa Street came up for lease… “We thought it would be so great if people had a place to stop and get a cup of coffee — we thought it would really help this end of downtown.” The current bakery on Pagosa Street opened its doors in 2001, but only as a “storefront” operation. All the baked goodies — bread, muffins, cookies and so on — were still being produced in the kitchen in Kathy and Kirsten’s home on the Lower Blanco River, and were delivered to the bakery early each morning, by Kirsten. “So Kathy didn’t get to hear all the exclamations of joy,” Kirsten noted.
