Texas City’s Bayou Golf Course remains a solid value play for Gulf Coast Golfers

If you have never played the Bayou Golf Course here in northern Galveston County, you’re missing out on a facility that stands above the norm for course conditions, playability, history and value.

Bayou Golf Course, which is owned and operated by the city of Texas City, has been a Gulf Coast staple for more

than 50 years. It was the facility where Butch Harmon, one of the game’s most noted and in-demand instructors, got his first job in the golf business.

“There are people who want to play this course just because Butch used to teach here,” said Mike Skiba, Bayou Golf Course’s head professional and director

Hole #8, Par 5

of golf. “I’m no Butch Harmon, but if you want to improve your golf game, I can get you on the right track.”

The routing was originally designed by legendary Texas golf architect Joe Finger and opened in 1974. Finger fashioned a mix of holes at the hybrid links/parkland-style facility that were raised from about 200 acres of marshland along Moses Bayou as it flows toward Galveston Bay and the Gulf of America.

A lot has changed about the area in the five decades since drives were first struck and putts were initially holed at the Bayou Golf Club.

In 2014, Houstonian Mike Nuzzo put his stamp on the experience here when he restored and enhanced the course, accentuating the track to bring water into play on 12 of the holes. Subsequent improvements and tweaks have been done as needed,

with the latest a resurfacing of the course’s cart paths and a total bunker revitalization.

Bayou Golf Course plays at 6,596 windswept yards from the back tees and to a par of 72. It checks a lot of boxes for most golfers, with testing greens complexes and demanding putting surfaces that helps the experience rise above the norm.

From the back tees four of the par 4s are carded at over 400 yards and three of the par 5s play at more than 500 yards. Add in the wind, which is always blowing here, and those seven holes alone clearly indicate the need for prowess with the driver. There are also 18 sand bunkers strategically placed in throughout the routing to

Clubhouse where Butch Harmon got his start

form a formidable combination with the course’s slightly elevated tees and greens.

“As everyone who plays here regularly can tell you, we can put the pins in places where precise approach shots are the only way they can be attacked and play close to par,” Skiba said.

After two relatively easy holes to start the round, the 414-yard par 4 third is a real test, playing into the prevailing wind with water along the left on

the approach and trees on the right near the preferred landing area. More water awaits behind the smallish and undulating putting surface at the back left. It’s one of the toughest pars on the Gulf Coast.

The 414-yard par 4 sixth is all about strategy, with a tee shot that’s played short of the bayou that begins 225 yards and then an approach to another windaffected, tiny green.

The 481-yard par-5 10th is one of the most fun holes on the course because of its risk/reward options. There is a lake in play off the tee and on the approach as well as out of bounds on the left, but birdie or better is within reach with two, or three, well-executed shots.

Bayou Golf Club is renowned for its four-hole closing stretch. The 573-yard par 5 15th is the longest hole here and has a double dogleg. Next up is the deadly and long 191-yard par 3 16th, which always seems to need one more club than you think to reach the putting surface.

Hole #12, Par 4
Hole #17, Par 4

The 457-yard 17th is the longest two-shotter on the course. It’s a doglegleft with a stout carry across the turn to the fairway with trees guarding the left side. Most of the Bayou Golf Course’s regular players consider a par here to be like a birdie, especially on those days when the wind comes in from the north.

The round wraps up with a 393yard par 4 that sports water along the left side and a deep bunker that guards the tournament hole placement at the back-left. It’s well-thought of as one of

the best finishing holes in the Bay Area.

The sense of community and fellowship one gets from playing golf is on ready display at the Bayou Golf Course. There’s nothing better than a great golf course that can be played at an affordable price and that’s what you get here.

“We’ve made this course a haven of sorts for golfers who want to have fun, be treated like family and enjoy a consistent level of great golf for under $40,” said Skiba, who been at Bayou GC for eight years. “If you come play our course we think you will want to play it again and again. That’s the best complement a golfer can give a course.”

The facility also offers the community a five-and-a-half acre walking family pitch-and-putt course with holes that play from 60 to 90 yards. It’s a place where you can find both the skilled golfer looking to hone his or her skills around the greens (and who isn’t) as well as beginners just learning about how great golf can be.

Bayou Golf Course is the home to the area’s First Tee program.

From Runway to Fairway in less than an hour

From runway to fairway in less than an hour is the theme for 2025 golf in the Traverse City Golf Capital of Northern Michigan and especially the spectacular Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.

With non-stop flights on American Airlines from Dallas/Fort Worth and now United Airlines from Houston, the ease of travel and great golf in cool summer time temperatures is easier than ever for Lone Star linksters looking to escape the summer heat.

“It has been exciting to see golfers from all over the country come to Traverse

City through these non-stop flights. For golfers to be able to land at Cherry Capital Airport, use our complimentary Resort shuttle, and be on a tee box in less than an hour is incredible,” said Caroline Rizzo from the landmark Grand Traverse Resort.

“It’s great to give travelers that opportunity to enjoy a seamless journey from their starting destination to Traverse City, over to the Resort and onto one of our three championship courses. We are less than 10 minutes from the airport so we mean it when we say within a half hour of landing you could be from the runway to the fairway.”

While the North Texas non-stop flights have been going for a few years, this is the second season for Houston to offer the same plan for Southeast Texas golfers, starting in June and continuing through the prime golf season.

Enjoy our TVC Airport Fireplace Room, offering the comforts of a northern Michigan lodge before your flight.
The Bear - Hole 1

“I would say the sweet spot is end of June through mid-October. You get the long days at the beginning of summer and then incredible fall golf in September and October. Fall in Michigan is beautiful – perfect weather, rich colors, and smaller crowds,” added Grand Traverse’s Steve Timmer.

Once you arrive here, you’re in the cool area and even cooler golf with three outstanding golf courses to begin your Northern Michigan journey.

“I mean, it starts with The Bear,” said Timmer. “The Bear is kind of our most famous course. It was Jack Nicklaus’ first course in the state of Michigan back in 1985.”

“The Bear is tough golf. It’s what most people come to the Resort to play. We also have The Wolverine, a Gary Player design and our most playable course with distinct front and back nines. Spruce Run dates to when we were just getting started. It started as the Acme Public Course and was redesigned by William Newcomb. It is tree-lined and wraps around the Hotel.”

All three courses are located on the Resort’s 900-acre property and start and

end out of the Clubhouse, which is home to the Pro Shop and Grille Restaurant. This one-stop-shop golf resort allows for convenience and maximum golf during Michigan’s long summer days.

“That’s the great thing about where we are geographically, we have long days in the summer with sunlight for nearly 15 hours some days,” says Timmer. “We do a promotion called ‘Golf Your Daylights Out’ which allows golfers to play as much golf as they can fit in a day for one price. It’s a week-long promotion during Summer Solstice and you’ll see golfers out from 5:45 in the morning until almost 10 at night,” said Timmer.

Aerial View of Grand Traverse Resort

Of course, the longer time in the day to play golf is one thing, the temperatures to want to do it is another.

“It starts with the weather for sure. You can’t beat summer in northern Michigan. From the golf courses to the inland lakes and bays, plus the wineries and trails. There’s so much to see and explore,” added Timmer.

“You have Pure Michigan golf courses everywhere; a plethora of nationally acclaimed golf courses. It just really helps with our golf community and leveraging our beautiful asset that we have in this community,” said Autumn MacClaren

with the Cherry Capital Traverse City Airport.

They have been working hard to bring more golfers to the area and now have almost two dozen non-stop flights from all over the country, and most important, they’re bringing Texas golfers closer and with ease to the destination.

“It’s been a phenomenal boost to get those flights here. Good things take time and I know that Texas airports and our airlines were working hard to get those routes, with Dallas and American Airlines first and then the success of Houston with United Airlines. There were only 14 seats

Spruce Run - Hole 7
The Wolverine - Hole 13

that went unsold last season last summer,” said MacClaren.

Of course, playing the great courses at Grand Traverse is one thing, but you need to eat, sleep and relax when golf is done. That’s where the 500-room, multistory Grand Traverse Resort comes in nicely.

“We have 500 guest rooms which allows us to welcome multiple golf groups at a time, large conferences that want to include a golf outing for their attendees, and more. Golf groups are extremely popular. They are coming from all over the country and booking years in advance,” said Rizzo.

“We are lucky to have three courses on property. That keeps things entertaining and different each day for the dozens of golf groups we host every year.”

When you add the dining options, spa, lounges, even a casino right down the road, golf is far from the only attraction which keeps the Grand Traverse Resort booming all summer long.

“Every year has been a new record year for us since 2020 in terms of golf.

The cool thing for us is those numbers come from Resort guests, people who live here locally, or those staying in other areas of Traverse City that want to come over and experience our courses,” said Timmer.

“We’re getting a lot of outside play like I said really record-setting for the game of golf itself is doing really well in Northern Michigan.”

Fairway to Runway has never been easier for a 2025 vacation to remember in Northern Michigan and at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.

No Slowdown in Sight For Blanco’s Rockin’ J Ranch

“Land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything, for it’s the only thing in this world that lasts.”
Margaret Mitchell, author, Gone With The Wind

The line above from one of most read books of the 20th century could easily have been a mantra for the developers of Rockin’ J Ranch, the Hill Country community that was founded on old fashioned ideals and solid, core values.

It was the land that drew Colonel Lee Roper, founder of Rinco – the parent company of Rockin’ J Ranch – to the region and enamored him to the site about four miles south of Blanco and about a half-hour north of the San Antonio city limit.

“We enjoy it here,” said the 95-yearold Roper, who moved to the Canyon

Lake area from El Paso in 1980. “As we were told when we first came here, the Texas Hill Country is some of the most sought-after property in the United States. The land that became Rockin’ J Ranch is 45 minutes from metropolitan areas like Austin and San Antonio, but we are light years away in tranquility.”

The unique livability of Rockin’ J Ranch helps residents get away from it all while sacrificing nothing as far as amenities and convenience. It is a fully gated community whose original ranch presence was preserved by incorporating some of the 150-year old homes and landmarks into the community’s clubhouse and the golf course design.

“Our location is one of our greatest selling points and has become even more so over the life of this community,” said Ryan Brubaker, the long-time sales manager at Rockin J’ Ranch.

The community was plated on a wide series

Rockin’ J Ranch
Vaaler Creek - Hole 18

of hills and plateaus amongst rolling fields of flowers and stands of oak and cedar trees. The natural land offers habitat to all kinds of wildlife, perfect for great photography and seclusion and a desired quality of life that’s hard to match.

One of the unique features of Rockin’ J Ranch is its use of a centralized water and sewer system rather than the well water and septic fields employed in the majority of other Hill Country developments.

Less than 10 percent of the original 1,800 homesites in the 1,064-acre community are still available for purchase and there’s no slowdown in sight for sales.

You can still buy land at Rockin’ J Ranch land on a handshake agreement and – if you put 50 percent down –take three years to pay off that parcel with zero interest. And there’s no deadline on building a home on your property here because Rinco of Texas, Inc., the developer of Rockin’ J Ranch and 23 other communities around the region, is in the land

business and is not a home builder.

One of Rockin’ J Ranch’s top amenities is Vaaler Creek Golf Club, the centerpiece of the community and one of the topranked public golf courses in the Austin-San Antonio corridor. All real estate sales include basic membership to the golf club.

The course was the first signature design by Michael Lowry, who fashioned a much-tougher-than-its-carded 6,874yard, par-72 track among live oak and cactus. Lowry routed the layout along the rolling, scrub brush-filled prairies. Throughout the round a golfer will play through many cool features such as ponds, sand hazards of various sizes, elevated tee shots and wavy, tree-lined fairways.

Both nines at Vaaler Creek GC offer far-reaching views of the surrounding region and the generous homesite setbacks mean that the houses near the course are mostly out of sight and unobtrusive, adding to the course’s isolated feel.

Style on the Green: The Rise of Golf Fashion

Men’s golf attire has evolved from formal, restrictive clothing in the 19th century, such as tweed jackets and knickerbockers, to more practical options in the 20th century. Polo shirts and tailored trousers replaced heavy fabrics, offering greater comfort. In the 1970s, polyester polos and plaid pants gained popularity, while accessories like caps and golf shoes continued to evolve. Today, men’s golf fashion blends performance fabrics like moisture-wicking

polyester with stylish designs for comfort and a professional look.

Men’s golf attire in the 19th century was formal, featuring tweed jackets, waistcoats, high-collared shirts, and knickerbockers (knee-length trousers) with wool socks. Flat caps or bowler hats offered sun protection, while leather shoes with hobnails provided grip. Though stylish, this attire prioritized etiquette over comfort, evolving toward more practical clothing in the early 20th century.

Men’s fashion in the 1920s embraced a relaxed yet elegant look, with high-waisted, wide-legged trousers (Oxford bags) and single- or double-breasted jackets. Casual wear, including knitted sweaters, cardigan vests,

and plus-fours, became popular, especially for golf.

Dress shirts with detachable collars, patterned ties, and accessories like fedora hats and two-tone Oxford shoes completed the stylish, comfortable shift from Victorian fashion.

Men’s golf attire in the 1970s featured bold colors and patterns, with polyester polo shirts, plaid pants, and wide-legged trousers. Knit vests, windbreakers, and belted shorts provided comfort and flexibility, while athletic-style golf shoes with spiked soles offered better traction. Visors or caps completed the vibrant, dynamic look of the era.

Today, men’s golf attire combines performance and style, with lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics for comfort and flexibility as well as UV protection, and temperature regulation. These high-performance fabrics not only keep

you comfortable but also enhance your performance on the course.

Polo shirts in a range of colors and patterns are paired with tailored shorts or pants, offering a modern, athletic fit. Golf shoes feature spikeless soles for traction, and accessories like caps or visors are common for sun protection. The focus is on functionality, with breathable materials that enhance movement while maintaining a polished, professional look on the course.

Staying cool and looking good on the green is essential, especially during hot summer days.

Always fashion forward, golfers are attuned to the look of the day.
Golfers have never been afraid of color

Things have never been better at Horseshoe Bay’s Blue Lake Golf Club

It’s a new day and a new standard of excellence at the underrated Blue Lake Golf Club.

Blue Lake Golf Club is not just a golf course – it’s a piece of history. Set on the south shore of Lake LBJ on a portion of the former Wennmohs Ranch, Blue Lake GC was established in 1962 and proudly holds the title of the oldest and only public golf course in the area.

Renowned Texas golf course architect Joe Finger designed the 2,376-yard, par 32 layout without a sand bunker and with a routing that includes five par 3s, three par 4s and one par 5. The course features rolling terrain – level lies are a premium – Bermuda greens, doglegs, lots of trees and views of the lake from several tees and fairways.

Blue Lake GC has seen remarkable moments that add a prestigious touch to its story, including a course record 55 for two turns around the track set in 1963 by the legendary Jack Burke Jr., the 1956 Masters and 1956 PGA Champion.

“Despite our rich heritage, many residents in the Highland Lakes area are just now discovering us, and we believe it’s time to shine a light on this hidden gem,” said Stephen Lusby, Blue Lake GC’s General Manager/Director of Golf.

“We invite both locals and tourists to come and experience the vibrant atmosphere, engaging events, and community spirit that make Blue Lake Golf Club a must-visit in the golfing community.”

2025 PGA Show Top Ten

The official name of the annual Orlando, Florida global golf gathering is the PGA Merchandise Show, but in reality it could be called the golf dreamers showcase because everybody with a product, an idea, a dream is here at the massive Orange County Convention Center in record numbers moving up and down the aisle to see the latest and greatest.

Here are 10 things which caught my eye from the 2025 PGA Merchandise Show. Coming to a store or a golf course or a golf trip near you.

•PAYNTR Golf: To really know the game, you have to feel the game and that’s one of the mottos of the Payntr Golf company. The maker of high-quality golf shoes has branched out to other golf items as well. The new Jason Day shoe, Eighty-Seven SC was in the spotlight after being tested by Day at the Masters last year and all

during the 2024 season. It comes in eye-catching white, both spiked and spikeless versions with ultimate comfort and wearability. www.payntrgolf. com.

•Golf As Art: Some Golf Courses just feel like a spectacular painting with their landscape and natural elements and that’s the idea of Oklahoma golf photographer Mike Kleeme who has shot more than 1,800 courses and aims to produce decorative wall hangings for golfers all over America. All you need to do is tell Kleeme the photo you want and the size you desire and he can do

the rest in vivid lifelike details. www. shopkleemeart.com.

•Folds of Honor: No Golf Organization has done more to help golfers and their families than the Oklahoma based Folds of Honor Foundation. Led by Lt. Col. Dan Rooney, a PGA Pro, they have raised millions for families and kids of fallen servicemen and women. The PGA of America is one of their largest supporters and golf great Jack Nicklaus did a golf course, American Dunes in Michigan, for free to help this great cause. www.foldsofhonor.org.

•Tommy Bahama & Club Car: When two iconic golf companies come together, the result is usually worth watching. That’s the case with longtime clothing powerhouse Tommy Bahama and golf cart manufacture Club. They have produced the first Tommy Bahama Golf Cart which features the light blue Tommy Bahama tropic exterior and the traditional Club Car body for the golfer who wants to stand out on their regular club rounds. Separately Tommy, which began in Hawaii, still makes the best silk and polyester shirts and shorts along with College-themed shirts for those who want to be cool and supportive. www.tommybahama.com.

•Ahead Golf: Outside of the annual garden party in Augusta Georgia each April, the best golf event in 2025 will be the Ryder Cup at Bethpage

CEO Lt Col Dan Rooney and Folds board member and LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez

Black outside NewYork City in September. The innovative Ahead Golf company, an official Ryder Cup Supplier, has already come out with their official Red, White and Blue outer wear topped by the luxury Ahead hats. In addition they now have an innovative bag tag etching machine which allows them to make personalized tags right when you get your Ahead gear. www. aheadweb.com.

•Tipsy Elves: For those who like some laughter and fashion when they play golf, there is no better place to look than the creative shirtmaker Tipsy Elves. They make high quality tops, but with a sense of humor. Among their best-selling items is the blue shirt covered in USA bomb pops. Why bomb pops? Because when golfers hit the courses, they are always looking to hit bombs! Indeed. You can get the American Flag on

your shirt or any other whimsical pattern. www.tipsyelves.com.

•Adare Manor: For Those who like their Ryder Cup in the midst of golf rich if not hostile territory, then the 2027 Ryder Cup at spectacular Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland is just the ticket. Nestled near a massive Irish lodging castle with perfect conditioning, the matches are rumored to feature Tiger Woods as the American captain, “it’s already been agreed to,” said one insider and with a favorable exchange rate and lots of places to golf when you’re not watching, it’s a great place to support USA golf even in a foreign land. www. adaremanor.com.

•Shot Scope: Styling is profiling as they say on the golf course, and the innovative European range finder Shot Scope has you covered in 2025 with a reversible name plate you can stick on the side of your portable device. Golfers worldwide will be interested since the vast majority of golfers in the UK opt for the wrist watch style device because of the number of walkers and the majority of Americans go for the handheld, because you can stick it on your cart. Whichever you prefer, both are covered here with style. www. shotscope.com.

•Dumbarnie Links: Scotland may be the home of golf, but one of the newest courses has emerged as one of the best. The still fairly new Dumbarnie Links, a few miles outside St. Andrews, looks like it has been there for decades, but that’s the way developers Clive Clark, Malcolm Campbell and veteran Director of Golf David Scott want it. Play the

famous courses here, but don’t leave out Dumbarnie Links. www.dumbarnielinks.com.

•True Linkswear: Ryder Cup champion Ryan Moore and his brother Jason wanted a traditional golf apparel company they could call their own and that’s exactly what they got with True Linkswear, now a hit with golfers who may never be as good as Moore, but can look the part. The company offers golfers apparel of all kind in pants, shirts, shoes, and even gloves. Golfing wear by golfers is True Linkswear. www.truelinkswear.com.

Wanna Bet? Golf Side Games

We all know making a birdie is exciting, but it’s so much sweeter when it’s worth something. Whether you’re making birdies or happy to make a par, here are a few side games that you can play with your friends to make every round of golf more interesting. All of these games can be played taking handicap difference into account so that all skill levels have a chance to win.

Bingo Bango Bongo: This can be played with 2, 3, or 4 players. In this game there are 3 points on every hole. One point goes to the longest shot to be on the surface of the green, one point goes to the person nearest to the hole and one point going to the longest putt made within the group. This is a great game for beginners or for large handicap differences within the group because overall score doesn’t matter.

will be the Captain on holes 4-6, so on and so forth. You can make each match worth whatever you like.

Baseball (or 9-point): This is another game for a 3-some. Each hole has 9 points available. The lowest net score gets 5 points, the next lowest gets 3 points and the highest score gets 1 point. If there is a tie for the low score the point distribution would be 4-4-1; a tie for the high score would be 5-2-2 and a three way tie would be 3-3-3. This game usually doesn’t get out of hand so I tend to play each point worth more than what I do in a Wolf game.

Captain: This game is made for a 3-some. Spin a tee before you start to get the order within your group. The first player will be the Captain and play a low net match for the first 3 holes against the other two players and the second player

The Dude: This a great game for a 3-some on a full course where you will be playing at a 4-some pace. Spin a tee before you start to determine your order. Player 1 will be The Dude on hole 1, player 2 will be The Dude on hole 2, so on and so forth. On each hole all three players tee off and then The Dude plays a second ball that is distinguishable from the original ball. The Dude plays both balls through the hole and his lower net score will go against the low net score from the other two players. When you’re The Dude you have twice as much exposed to win or lose. Only keep track of the original ball on the scorecard for your handicap (and Nassau’s that you might also have going).

Whether you’re playing for nickels, twenties or pride, no matter what it takes for you, just find ways to make every round of golf fun and exciting.

You Gotta Have Balls To Play Golf!

Some historians trace the sport of golf back to the Roman game of paganica, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. But, most agree golf can be credited to the Scots, tracing its history all the way back to the 15th century.

During the first four centuries of golf, there were only four types of golf balls: the Hairy, the Feathery, the Gutty, and the Haskell.

The Hairy Ball

The Hairy ball is considered to be the first official type of golf ball to be used in golf as we know it. This Hairy ball was close in design to the small, leather-stitched ball that the Romans used to use in some of their sports.

The hairy could be hit a distance of around 150 yards, but could easily become waterlogged if your stroke went astray.

Often referred to as a “common ball”, the hairy would be used for a couple of hundred years, up until the early 1700s.

The Feathery

The Feathery is the most famous golf ball of all time. References in literature to a ball made with feathers and leather pop up from the early 17th century on, but it is unclear when it became the standard ball in golf.

A feathery golf ball would have been made by stuffing feathers into a few pieces of leather stitched together. It took feathery ball makers an entire bucket of goose feathers to produce one ball. The feathery ball would then be wet, and as the ball dried, the feathers expanded while the leather shrank, producing equalized pressure inside and outside the ball.

This created a golf ball that could only be matched by modern golf balls in its tightness.

The Feathery golf ball could be hit an average distance of 193 yards by a driver, which was a significant improvement over the hairy golf ball.

The Gutty Ball

Beginning in 1848, golf balls were being made from the gum harvested from a guttapercha tree. Commonly known as “gutties”.

These were the first golf balls with mass-manufacturability, and they could be reheated and re-molded if they went out-of-round. Golfers began to notice that gutty balls with nicks and scratches had a more consistent flight path

The Haskell Ball

A man by the name of Coburn Haskell, an American, developed the wound core golf ball in 1898. The Haskell was a ball that consisted of a solid rubber round core, wrapped with rubber threads, and then covered with a layer of gutta-percha gum.

Initially the Haskel golf balls were made with the bramble patterns like the guttie balls. However in the early 1900s it was discovered that inverting the dimples to go inward and concave gave the ball a better flight pattern which was easier to control.

In no time, the Haskell became one of the most significant technological advances in golf and would be the standard golf ball from 1900-1967.

Now covered in dimples, the new 20th Century golf ball can be smacked into seriously controlled flight, and pros could even put backspin on it to make it stop more quickly upon landing.

April 24-27, 2025

The Club at Carlton Woods

The world’s best female golfers will once again descend on the Greater Houston area this April when The Chevron Championship returns to The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands on April 24-27. The LPGA Tour’s first major championship of the year promises to deliver thrills on the course as the most talented players on the planet compete to get their hands on the Dinah Shore Trophy and take the traditional winner’s leap into the lake on Sunday afternoon.

Founded by famed entertainer and women’s golf supporter Dinah Shore and first played in 1972, the tournament was held for many years in the California desert. The tournament moved to Southeast Texas in 2023, a year after Chevron took on the title sponsorship. Last year, Chevron and the LPGA announced an extended commitment that will ensure the tournament stays in The Woodlands through the end of the decade.

That means that stars like Nelly Korda, Lydia Ko, Rose Zhang and more will be regular fixtures on the Houston sports calendar through at least 2029. For Korda, that should be welcome news after her two-stroke victory at The Woodlands last spring. The victory capped off a record-tying run of five wins in five starts, a feat only legends Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam had previously achieved.

Korda won with her trademark consistency, the only player in the field to shoot under 70 in all four rounds. While she methodically wore down the field, she had to hold off furious charges from several players, including Brooke

Nelly Korda, 2024 Chevron Champion

Henderson’s course-record 8-under-par third round to charge into second place after 54 holes, and Maja Stark’s late run on the back nine Sunday to finish two shots behind Korda in second.

Lauren Coughlin took the course by storm in the first round, posting -6 to claim the 18-hole lead. At the time, Coughlin seemed to come out of nowhere, but in hindsight it was merely a sign of things to come, as the seven-year Tour veteran used her third-place finish in Houston as a springboard into a breakout season that culminated in a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup Team in her native Virginia.

The Chevron Championship remains one of the most family-friendly major sporting events around, with children 17 and under getting in free with

an accompanying adult ticket. Spectator Passes start at $40 for single-day admission, while weekly admission for all four days of play starts at $200. Daily and

weekly Spectator Passes include access to tournament grounds, various open seating options across the course and

The Club at Carlton Woods

food and beverage options available for purchase at concessions stands.

Spectators will also have access to many exciting fan activities spread across the venue, including the Inspiration Dome, the Chevron STEM Zone and the Girls Golf STEM Academy, among other options.

For spectators, the 2025 edition promises to be the best yet, with world-class dining available on the course, expanded spectator seating options on key holes, new and improved merchandise offerings, and the opportunity to see the most talented golfers in the world up close and in person.

and golf fans throughout Texas. Texas Golf Insider will once again be on hand, so keep an eye out for us and come say hi!

The combination of world-class golf, unbeatable prices and fun outside-theropes activations make The Chevron Championship a can’t-miss event for

Tickets for The Chevron Championship in 2025 are officially on sale now. The on-sale coincides with the LPGA’s announcement of the full 2025 LPGA Tour schedule this morning.

The Southern Texas PGA is thrilled to announce that PGA of America Member Bryan Minnick has been named the 2024 STPGA Golf Professional of the Year. This is the Association’s highest honor and is awarded for leadership, strong moral character, and a substantial record of service to the Association and the game of golf.

Minnick, elected to PGA Membership in 1998, has held Head Golf Professional roles at The Dominion Country Club in

San Antonio, Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, and currently at Traditions Club in Bryan, TX.

Minnick’s journey of service and volunteerism with the Southern Texas PGA began 17 years ago on the Tournament Committee. Since then, he has served as Committee Chairman, At-Large Board Member, and most recently as President of the STPGA. His deep commitment to the organization comes from his desire to make things better. From tournament purses, to Member education, to growing the STPGA staff, he continues to push the entire team and Membership to improve and ensure we keep our Members’ best interest first.

“Bryan is all about relationships, listening, and then making decisions for the best interest of the PGA Member,” said Thomas Hutton, STPGA Executive Director. “I have developed a great appreciation for his ability to maintain levelness in turbulent times and ask the right questions before important decisions are needed.”

For Minnick, golf has been more than a game—it has shaped his life by providing incredible mentors, lasting friendships, and most importantly, his true purpose. His dedication to growing the game reached a pinnacle in 2023 when he accepted the Herb

Graffis Award on behalf of the Southern Texas PGA. This moment gave him the opportunity to stand before PGA of America leaders at the National Annual Meeting and highlight the remarkable impact that STPGA is having on individuals and the growth of STPGA programs over the last 5-10 years. Congratulations to Bryan for winning this year’s Golf Professional of theYear!

Another notable Section Award winner is Craig Trahan, PGA Master Professional and Director of Instruction at Houston Country Club, as the 2024 Southern Texas PGA Harvey Penick Teacher of the Year. Named after the legendary PGA Professional and teacher Harvey Penick, this award is given to an individual for overall excellence in golf instruction.

Trahan has been a teacher of the game for 19 years and is a pinnacle example of a teacher. Trahan’s teaching style is his own unique style but pays homage to the greats that he had studied and those that have come before him. Trahan has built his teaching philosophy on these influences along with the guiding principle of listening to his students and their needs. Trahan gives every lesson with passion, enthusiasm, and praise to the golfer regardless of skill level. Craig’s ability to connect with his students and put his whole heart into his lessons makes the STPGA honored to call him the 2024 Harvey Penick Teacher of the Year award recipient.

In addition to these awards, the STPGA is also announcing 11 other Section Awards and numerous Chapter Awards. We would like to thank our Awards Committee, led by PGA Member Ricky Lyons, for their time and energy in selecting these winners.

We have listed a short phrase or sentence that helps speak to what each award is all about. Each year the STPGA receives many applications, and it is a true honor to win either a Section or Chapter Award!

“Craig is one of the hardest-working PGA Members I have ever met. His impact at Houston Country Club has been tremendous, and he has truly built something special there,” said STPGA Awards Committee Chairman Ricky Lyons. “This award is meant to honor someone who embodies the spirit of teaching, and Craig exemplifies that perfectly.”

Section Award winners will be formally presented with their honors during the STPGA’s 57th Annual Awards Banquet on Monday, February 17, 2025, in College Station, Texas, while Chapter Awards will be presented at their respective Chapter Meetings later this Fall.

Congratulations to all award winners!

Innovative Match Format

TGL matches are played over 15 holes and incorporate singles play, alternate-shot strategies, and team decision-making. A 40-second shot clock ensures matches are fast-paced, maintaining viewer interest throughout.

The league’s scoring system is inspired by the NHL’s point system:

•2 points for a regulation win,

•1 point for an overtime loss,

•0 points for a regulation loss.

This system emphasizes aggressive, exciting play, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Every shot and hole carries weight, creating intense matchups every week.

The putting greens are equipped with adjustable surfaces to simulate diverse terrains and challenges. These technological innovations ensure authenticity while adding futuristic flair.

Fan engagement is a top priority, with interactive zones at the SoFi Center and exclusive behind-the-scenes content available online. TGL leverages its partnership with SoFi to create memorable experiences for fans, both in person and digitally.

The 2025 TGL Season

The inaugural season of TGL Presented by SoFi promises unmatched excitement. Teams will battle in 15 matches during the regular season, culminating in a playoff showdown

SoFi Center Interior

to determine the champion. The playoffs include semifinals and a dramatic best-of-three championship series.

The league debuted on January 7, 2025, with standout performances setting the stage for an electrifying season. The Bay Golf Club dominated New York Golf Club in the opening match, securing a 9-2 victory. Los Angeles Golf Club also impressed, defeating Jupiter Links Golf Club 12-1 in a thrilling contest.

Prime-Time Accessibility

One of TGL’s key innovations is its focus on accessibility. The league’s condensed format is ideal for prime-time television, making it appealing to younger audiences and busy professionals. Matches air live on ESPN and ESPN2, with streaming available on ESPN+, ensuring fans worldwide can tune in.

This accessibility, combined with the excitement of the matches, positions TGL to connect with both traditional golf enthusiasts and a new generation of fans.

Why TGL Matters

TGL represents the future of golf by balancing tradition with innovation. It introduces a faster, more dynamic

version of the game while maintaining the sport’s integrity. The league’s emphasis on technology, fan engagement, and global accessibility ensures it will leave a lasting impact on the world of sports entertainment.

As TGL grows, it will continue to inspire players and fans alike, proving that the game of golf can evolve to meet the demands of a modern audience. The journey has only just begun, but one thing is clear: TGL Presented by SoFi is setting a new standard for the sport.

TEXAS

A Birmingham.... Golf

There are 31 golf courses within a 15mile radius of Birmingham AL, about half of them being public, and the other half being private. Suprisingly, only 6 are set as 9-hole layouts.

When you get a group of 8-12 golfers together, it is unlikely that they will all agree on anything -- when that group is also “golf writers”, even more unlikely.

However, when it comes to Birmingham golf, our group of hacking scribes seemed to all agree on a few things: Birmingham is a great golf destination; our familiarization trip (FAM) was too short, and the Birmingham CVB folks are awsome!

First, let me start with a few of the non-golf must see sites: the Birminham Civil Rights Institute, Vulcan Park and Museum (breathtaking 360-degree views of Birmingham), Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, Rickwood Field, and the Negro Southern League Museum. One thing this writer didn’t fully expect in this city was great food and drink! From a local Italian place - La Fresca Ristorante Italiano, to local joints like Back Forty Beer Company, Saw’s Soul Kitchen, The Collins Bar, and the infamous House of Found Objects.

The Eighteenth Hole at OxmoorValley
Me
Barber Motorsports Museum

Yes, yes, yes, let’s talk about GOLF!

The Ridge Course at Oxmoor Valley (a Robert Trent Jones Trail course) is a great place to start your Birmingham golf trip. With its roller coaster, but generously wide fairways, heavy tree cover and precipitous 150-foot elevation changes, is incredibly photogenic and features some of the most spectacular par 5s in the area. Pairing that with the receptive greens makes for a very enjoyable round. After your round, or after a quick bite to eat, you need to go to The Backyard (also known as the Short Course) -- the par-3 walking course at Oxmoor Valley is a collection of 18 pure one-shotters which offer severe elevation changes. Virtually

every hole plays downhill in the shade of surrounding mountains. What a treat this gem is.

Be sure to also play the longest golf course in Birmingham; Ross Bridge (also a RTJ Trail course). Don’t let the length of this course deter you, as there are several sets of tees that help even a “Bogey Pro” (like me) enjoy the round. Measuring a staggering 8,191 yards from the tips, Ross Bridge is destined to be one of the longest courses ever built, though multiple tees allows it to be played as short as 5,312 yards from the most forward set of markers making it a worthy participant of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Two lakes and an impressive waterfall, combined with some serious yardage, make this a most memorable course.

No golf trip in Birmingham would be complete without playing Alabama’s oldest golf course -- Highland Park Golf Course. Bobby Jones had his first win, at age 14, at this course! When I say this is a MUST PLAY when you visit Birmingham,YOU MUST PLAY!

From the food and drink, historical sites, touristic areas, and not to mention - THE GOLF - , put Birmingham, Alabama on your vacation short list!
