COVER LETTER I have currently been working in a local design studio where I worked closely with the Head Designer. I have had a very hands on approach when it comes to the briefs and tasks set for me. I have been very proud of a brief that I independently produced work for, which directly contributed to our clients stall winning, “Best Stall at the CIPD Learning and Development Show in London. Before I started working at the design studio I managed a highly successful catering establishment. I am proud of the developments in the business whilst I was part of it. Whilst there in my spare time, I had continued to develop my design portfolio.

Outside of my academic studies I have secured several design commissions for myself through advertising and word of mouth. This has enabled me to further develop my existing portfolio. These clients have ranged from small businesses to transnational companies. As a result of my experience in the design industry I believe I can bring effective skills to the business. I am confident I can perform in whatever capacity I am needed, being able to work equally well within a team as I can alone. I have good communication skills and can build and maintain business relationships with corporations and individuals. I have a very positive attitude towards work and always work to a high standard.

I have completed my Graphic Communication Degree with Plymouth University. I have also completed a National Diploma in Graphic Communication. I am highly competent at using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. I have a good working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite and Serif web design software, the latter of which I am teaching myself to use.

HOBBIES

I am a very active person who always enjoys pushing themselves to the limit. I am an enthusiastic Downhill Longboarder where i have competed in many events across the UK. I am also a keen Rock Climber, which has taken me too many interesting places all over the UK and Europe. I also enjoy Mountain Biking as well as Road Cycling. I have been a Cross Country Runner for many years, which has lead me to take part in many competitions and events. Even through these activities

8

I have acquired some design commissions within the extreme sport world following my degree. I am a dedicated motorcyclist and have recently taken it upon myself to rebuild a motorbike, which with a bit of luck should be completed in the coming months. I also design and make stencil street art in my spare time. My interests outside of my main line of work have enabled me to meet and network with lots of different people from all walks of life.

PORTFOLIO

In this project I was asked to create a new brand identity for the Acoustica Music Festival that is held every year at the Exeter Phoenix. My design thinking was to create a bolder more commercial identity, to show that this was a serious professional festival. that would attract a wider audience

10

11

For this Brief I was asked to update the existing identity of The Bike Shed Theatre. Their current branding failed to attract customers and didnt stand out amongst other local advertisments and brands. My initial thought was for the new brand to be bold and bright. I used a ‘theatre spotlight’ image in the branding and brochure cover as a simple effective way or grabbing peoples attention and not over complicating the design. With the posters I used heavy bold type over bright colours so that amongst other posters these would stand out to the audience first.

12

13

With this project the aim was to create an identity to raise awareness of mental health, and to communicate information clearly and effectlively. The target audience was aimed at people of all ages, with the main focus of communicating information. So the design had to be simple and clear. I managed this with bold text over bold colours. This identity could be placed in many different media situations and still standout without being too bold that it could conflict with its environment.

14

15

This is the D&AD brief that I had chosen to complete and submit. The brief was for Nissan set by Interbrand to create a new lifestyle subbrand for their sustainable range of eco friendly products. The target audience is for 18 - 35 year olds. the brand had to ‘reawaken desire for nissans products’. My intial thoughts were that the brand had to be commercial, professional and flexible on a global level. I have chosen electric scooters for the project as they have a particular aesthetic quality that is interesting to work with, but more importantly fit the practical needs of a modern world, which relates to the brand.

16

17

With this live brief I was approached by Jazzys with the desire to create an identity for a new Takeaway. They pride themselves for creating takeaway meals influenced from dishes from around the world. They wanted a rustic handmade identity that would also compete more upmarket eateries. I did this using influences from wood block printing and textures alongside more

18

modern fixxed width typography. The final outcomes were received with much praise from the business owners and their customers, with sales increasing once designs had been published and advertising distributed.

19

This was a live brief where I was asked to create a modern brand identity for HEL Performance, who manufacture hi spec brake hoses for motorbikes. The brand would have to work in brochures, magazines and on websites. I created a new identity that incorporates the products they manufacture for a more personal touch.

20

I was also asked to create a single page spread that would be featured in multiple leading motobike magazines.

21

I was approached by Hartnoll Fresh Foods, butchers, of Exeter to create a fun piece of street art for their security shutters. They wanted to create some art work to try and stop regular street art being sprayed all over their shop which made it look untidy and unclean. They wanted the piece to be fun and also relate to their business where they sold award winning meats and pasties. Since this work has been in place there has been no more graffiti and has put a smile on customers faces.

22

23

This brief focused on layout designs in the form of a magazine. I was asked to create a masthead, front covers, double paged spreads and also a website design. In the logo design I incorporated a skateboard wheel bearing, which would instantly be recognisable to the target audience. It was important to have a theme running through out all of the elements so the audience had an instantly recognisable publication.

24

25

In this project I tasked myself with designing a logo for a devonian watch making company. The theme was to bring the old in with the new in terms of watch making design and business identity. I used vintage style photography, that I took and edited myself, for the poster campaign and overlayed bold typography to communicate clearly and help the posters stand out. The logo used different shades of devonshire greens to cement the location of the business into the identity. The dark textured background highlights the logo and makes it standout.

26

27

This project aimed at creating a completely new identity for a business that was in dire need of a total revamp. The first task was simplifing the existing identity into its key elements. From then I could start from the ground up to create a simple effect brand identity that could hold its own in the wine industry. It was key to have a rustic design to emphasis the importance of the handmade aspect of the wine. The result of using wood block printing for the logo over a texture, as well as soft colours highlighting key elements of the website and their

28

different types of wine, created a solid standout identity with great visual impact.
