IN THE COROMANDEL
I FELT BARREN
Not barren like a desert plain, or a windowless facade, but the kind that seeped through me, from limbs into toes into sand and salty spray.
IN THE COROMANDEL
I FELT ENDLESS
A list of things I did whilst there:
slept on long beaches, read half of Normal People, listened to the same playlist 5 times through tinny earphones, dreamt about boys working in corner stores, played Scattergories every night until I couldn’t look at a letter without thinking of all the different types of sea creatures and baby names it entailed.
IN THE COROMANDEL
I FELT LIQUID
My body slipping like heavy velour over morphing terrain.
Melting into rockpools, gutters, shower drains until I could no longer recognise it.
IN THE COROMANDEL
I FELT MOSSY
On our last day it rained, uprooting the smell of damp earth that soaked into our rental car and lingered there for a moment as I unwound the window. I waved my hand outside praying for Internet connection, and thought of mountains.
