HANICE THOMPSON of Spot Valley High School grew up in the violence-prone community of Flankers in Montego Bay, St James, where she was sometimes deprived of her schooling as gunshots rang out in the community.

The periods of bloodletting, which significantly lowered her school attendance, were exacerbated by the financial strain affecting her household. But Thompson’s determination to excel resulted in her beating the odds with high academic achievements and being named most outstanding performer under the United States Ambassador’s Academic Achievement Awards (AAAA) programme. The scholar was presented with her award at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St James on March 14, along with Donisha McDermot, a 17-year-old grade-11 student at Cedric Titus High School, who got the first runner-up award. During an recent interview at the US Embassy, where the awardees met with Ambassador Pamela Bridgewater, Thompson told The Gleaner she was humbled and thankful for the prestigious award.

UNDAUNTED “Flankers has been deemed a violent community but, nevertheless, I don’t let that get me down,” she said. “Also, only my father works, so it posed a [financial] problem for my education sometimes.” Thompson added: “We met struggles with my education, and my parents sought outside help to assist me in my schooling, including (assistance from my school), which helped me to pay for my subjects, and at a later date, my parents repaid them.” The lower sixth-form student, who has been successful in 10 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), seven with distinctions, will also be sitting four subjects in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination. In addition to the AAAA, Thompson, who is head girl at her school, has received the Jamaica Association of Principals of

Secondary Schools Award for Academic Excellence, maintained top position in her class from first to sixth form, and was awarded the Principal’s Award for Outstanding Student at her graduation ceremony at the end of fifth form. She also represented her school at the Denbigh Agricultural Show, where her presentation was on ‘Instrumental Insemination of the Bee’. Thompson praised her family and the school community for their contribution to her success. “My parents and the school community have played a significant part in my achievements. They have worked hard in getting me to reach where I am today and I will continue to work hard,” she pledged. Instead of hindering her progress, Thompson said the several challenges she has endured have also played a major part in her successes. “Sometimes I use struggles to motivate me. I had problems with the violence in my community. I was doing 10 subjects, so it was very difficult to hand in the SBAs (school-

based assessments) and I had to find time to help other students with their work,” she said. “I tried to balance all this in my time because, by doing this, it built my character and helped me to be more responsible at the end of the day,” Thompson said.

NEVER GIVE UP She thanked the US Embassy for the award and at the same time encouraged other students to work hard so that they can achieve big rewards. “I want to let people know that the struggles will be there but they should not give up. Do it one step at a time and by whatever means it takes to achieve, take it. Even if it means giving up your free time and entertainment, you will reach your goals in life,” she continued. It was no different for McDermot of Daniel Town, Trelawny, who has struggled financially but continues to maintain a high scholarly standard and has stayed at the top of her class since grade seven. The fifth-form student, who is the head

girl at Cedric Titus, will sit eight subjects in the CSEC examinations this year. She said the AAAA motivates her to work harder and focus on her goal of becoming a medical doctor. “A lot of students do well, but because they don’t get the support and no one recognises them, they sometimes get demotivated and lose focus. So this award means a lot to me. It is good to know that I am recognised, and I am very grateful to the ambassador. She is doing a good thing and I really appreciate it,” she said.

In my community, you don’t have a lot of girls who maintain high academic standards, so I think I can be a role model for them. I can also motivate them to do their best in their schools.

AGENT OF CHANGE McDermot has pledged to use the opportunity to be an agent of change for her peers in her rural community. “In my community, you don’t have a lot of girls who maintain high academic standards, so I think I can be a role model for them. I can also motivate them to do their best in their schools,” she added. Thompson’s strong Christian mother, Carol Thompson, had prayed to God to bless her daughter despite her living in one of the country’s toughest communities; and that prayer appears to have been answered. “It is not an easy road. When she is gone to school, I have to be on my knees praying

for her to be back home safe. I always tell her to hold up her head to go forward because the more she does that, it will be better for her,” McDermot’s mother said. “My role in her achievement is to pray because whatever she received is not because of her, it is because of God. When I go to God, I pray for Him to help her and I know it is He who is doing the job,” she added. More than 208 high-school students have been awarded under the AAAA programme since it started in June of last year. Public affairs officer at the US Embassy, Yolanda Kerney, said the programme, which targets students from schools across the island, has been successful so far. She said the initiative is intended to encourage students who have achieved academic excellence and to underscore the commitment of the United States ambassador to education in Jamaica. “Ambassador Bridgewater is very keen on education and she understands very well the challenges of the Jamaican education system, and she wanted to do something that would in some way recognise the challenges that many of these children face and overcome to excel,” Kerney said. 3

Church wants back its schools? Anglicans might not renew lease on 61 schools sometimes you just hear it,” Gascoigne explained. Currently, there is an outstanding issue as it relates to Guanaboa Vale All-Age School in St Mary, where it was announced that the school is scheduled to be closed, with the number of children on roll, 72, being the main reason.

Carl Gilchrist Gleaner Writer

HE ANGLICAN Church is threatening not to renew the lease arrangements with the Government for 61 primary and basic schools across the island, claiming breaches of the lease agreements. It is understood that one other religious denomination has already written to the Ministry of Education advising that leases on its schools will not be renewed, citing the same issues. The lease arrangements, each for 49 years, have all expired, and Director of Anglican Schools Gloria Gascoigne says based on issues with the Government, the lease arrangements might not be renewed. “All the leases that the Anglican held with the Ministry of Education have expired and because of what has been happening, coming out of the Ministry of Education, the Reece Committee is giving serious thought not to renew the leases,” Gascoigne told The Gleaner at the end of the three-day Anglican synod at Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort in Ocho Rios recently.

T

NO CONSULTATION Added to that, the announcement was made that the building would then be used to house an agro-processing plant – all this without consulting the church, which owns the property. But according to Gascoigne, while the number of students on roll isn’t great, there was no way the church would allow for the displacement of the children. In addition, the principal at the school was making plans to uplift the school and community at large, the director said. She explained: “The principal spent three years doing a needs

assessment and came up with a project. She has already started to train and have certified people as tour guides. It’s very historical where the school is – underground caves and so on. She pulled the community in, where they would do crafts ... . She started an apiary, and there were other things, and she shared that document and the church was in agreement with it.” She continued: “(The principal) also said there were young people who needed training, so she wanted to partner with HEART Trust/NTA to do classes and skills because they had the space. It’s not that you don’t want Government to get involved, but I think the procedure was wrong. “If you know the building belongs to the church, at least have some conversation with them and say, ‘This is what we’re doing. How can we work together?’ And tell us what plans will be in place for those children. You can’t displace children.”

CHURCHES REPRESENTED Established in 2009, the Reece Committee is made up of representatives of churches which own public schools, with the purpose of addressing issues facing all their schools and education in general. These churches include the Anglican Church, Associated Gospel Assemblies, Baptist, Church of God, Methodist, Moravian, Roman Catholic, Society of Friends (Quakers) and United. The Anglican Church owns more schools than any other group or organisation in Jamaica. It currently owns 214 schools, including over 100 primary and allage, 83 early-childhood, 10 preparatory, four junior high, 11 high, and one tertiary. Under the lease arrangement, the church would lease the property to the Government, which would be directly in charge, and the church is represented on the boards. Should the leases not be renewed, it would mean the schools would become church schools, with the church having more input, including control of the board. In fact, the biggest

A second one was subsequently built for the original St Peter’s in Falmouth, England. difference would be the composition of the school board. As a leased school run by the Government (at primary level), the church would have one representative on the board, which would be the chairman. As a church school, the church would have four representatives on the board, including the chairman. Gascoigne said should the church take back the schools, the Government would still be

responsible for paying the teachers. She said issues prompting the action include the noninvolvement of the church in certain changes that are taking place at some schools, which are in breach of the lease agreement. “We (Church and Government) had a discussion and it was said when you’re doing policies that are going to affect the school, (the Government should) share it with us. But this never happens;

FLOYDS KNOBS, Ind (AP): ARISSA HALL isn’t your typical business tycoon. The Floyd Central High School (FCHS) sophomore doesn’t dress in high-powered business suits in her position as assistant manager of Highlander Outfitters. In fact, Hall’s more likely to sport a backpack rather than a briefcase as she helps run one of the largest school-based spirit wear stores in Indiana staffed exclusively by students. For the past five years, FCHS teacher Chris Street has helped young entrepreneurs like Hall to learn about the realities of the corporate world by incorporating this handson approach to his business management class. Having to maintain a waiting list due to the popularity of the course, Street limits the class size to 35 students each semester. His lesson curriculum helps teach business basics while the first-hand marketplace experience reinforces important fundamentals that a book might not be able to fully explain. Three days a week, the high-schoolers attend class where they study key corporate concepts. On the other two days, they apply those theories by running the school’s inhouse spirit wear store. Once a semester, students must also sell their wares at an additional event, such as a football or basketball game.

M

KEEPING COST LOW As of April, Street expects Highlander Outfitters to sell close to US$30,000 in merchandise for the year. With a profit margin of 10 to 20 per cent, he advises his students to keep the cost of the product as low as possible so more people can purchase the items. “We don’t make a big profit to begin with. We try to keep our costs down. T-shirts are only US$10. Hoodies are only US$25 because we want to get as much product out there so

How to succeed College readies students for business world

we can increase school spirit and get Floyd Central out in the community,” Street said. “Any money we make goes back in to buy new products. It goes back in to new product lines or to expand our inventory.” Street also said the class donates baskets and other merchandise to various FCHS organisations like the alumni association for special events. No public funds or taxpayer dollars subsidise the store. It survives the same way as businesses must in the real world – through providing a good product at a reasonable price.

BUSINESS KEY “We have to make money in order to survive,” he said. “Although there’s a safety net for the kids, as a whole, we have to be efficient and productive. We are an actual business. We operate based on sales, quality and efficiency just as any business does. We stand alone.” Recognising few classes promote such independence, Hall said she finds the ability to learn from her mistakes makes the course unique. Kids see the consequences of their actions, just like in the real world. Hall thinks this, and other features, will help prepare her for her dream of becoming a hospital CEO after college. “I like how (Street) lets us do our own thing so we can see what it’s like when we are on our own. He lets us take charge and run things. He lets us see what happens when we make a mistake,” Hall said. “I think it’s a very unique class. It’s something that a lot of schools don’t offer.”

Street also thinks that allowing students to learn from their mistakes will benefit all his scholars in the future. “One great thing that we have is a lot of student-directed programmes. And we give them a bit of a safety net where it’s safe to make the mistakes now,” he said. “They need to make mistakes to learn from them. If I tell them everything, they’re never going to be independent thinkers. They’re never going to have that entrepreneur spirit that they need.” Senior Brantley Seawright hopes to become one such leader. Attending the University of Mississippi this fall, he wants to

major in psychology and eventually open up his own practice. “I want to open my own psychology business after college,” Seawright said. “When I found out they offered an actual business management class, I knew that would be beneficial to me.” Street believes the class benefits students like Seawright regardless of whether they plan to enter the business world or not. All pupils, he said, learn great interpersonal skills through the store, not to mention the capacity to deal with a myriad of people. “Business is everywhere. All those skills (the students are learning) can translate into any career,” Street said. “Even if you’re not a business student, you can come in and take this course and learn something.” Information from: News and Tribune, Jeffersonville, Ind., http://www.newsandtribune.com FILE

Applicants may be required to attend interviews and/or special tests designed to assess their command of the English language, numeracy, and reasoning ability.

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO APPLY TO UTECH? An applicant will be considered for a programme if s/he meets the normal matriculation requirements, and is at least 17 years of age by December of the year of admission.

University of California reports jump in out-of-state admissions

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) : HE PERCENTAGE of nonCalifornians admitted to University of California (UC) campuses next fall has spiked dramatically, officials reported last Tuesday, meaning more tuition for the financially troubled system, but anxiety for residents who worry they are being squeezed out of the prestigious schools. A record 80,289 students, nearly two-thirds of the 126,455 students who applied as freshmen to a UC school, were accepted at one of the public system’s nine undergraduate campuses, officials said. Of that number, 18,846 students, or more than 23 per cent of the freshmen, are from out- of-state or abroad and will have to pay nearly three times more than California residents if they decide to enrol. The figures reflect a marked increase from last year when 18 per cent of freshmen admitted were not from California. And it’s almost double the percentage of foreign and out-of-state students who gained admission for fall 2009. Every campus except Berkeley, where the number of non-residents admitted declined from a year ago, accepted significantly more international and out-of-state students for the fall 2012 term, preliminary data show. At the same time, four campuses – Los Angeles, Irvine, Merced and Santa Barbara – admitted fewer Californians.

T

DISTURBING TREND Governor Jerry Brown said he was disturbed by the trend, and used it as an opportunity to promote a November ballot proposition asking voters to approve a higher sales tax and higher income taxes on those making US$250,000 a year or more. “I don’t like it at all,” Brown told reporters in Sacramento after addressing a meeting of the California Medical Association. “This is ugly, and we’d better do everything we can to slow it down and even reverse it.” Even though the system has stepped up recruitment of students from outside the state, 61,443 Californians – 3.6 per cent more than last year – still gained admission to a UC school, though not necessarily to one of the campuses they hoped to attend.

That increase is due to the system accepting roughly 7,900 more freshmen than it did last year. But because the system received so many more applications across the board, the admission rate for in-state students dropped from 69.7 per cent last year to 65.8 per cent for this year.

PARENTS WORRIED “I don’t see how it couldn’t make us worried that our kids are going to have a much harder time getting into the local schools. It’s distressing,” said Berkeley resident Carrie Hibbs, whose daughter is a high school junior hoping to attend the University of California at Santa Barbara in the fall of 2013. “It just means there will be a trickle-down effect, with more students looking to Cal State schools and them becoming more competitive and crowded, so it’s going to affect a lot of us.” Kate Jeffery, the UC system’s interim director of undergraduate admissions, acknowledged that California high school students whose education is subsidised by the state are facing stiffer competition from non-residents “who are paying their own way, if you will”. Non-residents will pay about US$36,078 in tuition in the coming academic year, compared with US$13,200 for residents. “The issue with the California resident students is a funding problem, the amount of money we get from the state to educate students,” Jeffery said. “That amount has not increased.”

TOO EARLY TO ASSESS Because not all students who are admitted end up enrolling, it is still too early to say what proportion of the freshman class will come from outside California, she said. Last year, non-residents accepted their admission offers at lower rates than in-state students, and ended up comprising about 12 per cent of the freshmen who planned to enrol in the fall. Jeffery sought to emphasise the benefits of building a student body that has more non-Californians. Apart from the financial contribution, out-of-state students bring geographical and cultural diversity to campuses, she said. THE GLEANER 2012 SCHOLARSHIP LISTINGS | TUESDAY, MAY 1, 2012
