48 INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT GROUP Meet the Team

…. to everyone wherever you are in the world. You are all part of the Royal Photographic Society community.
Welcome to the February 2025 edition of the International Newsletter.
This is the sixth issue of this online publication and it is really feeling as if it is starting to engage with the majority of our RPS international members. It is about you and for you – so we encourage you all to read, be inspired, engage with activities and to feel part of the wider RPS community. Tell us about your exhibition. Send us stories and photos to include. We love to hear from you.
Whilst you may justifiably think that the RPS is UK centric I can assure you that at the regular UK meetings of the heads of the various groups international members are considered, and programmes adapted to facilitate your engagement. Every Special Interest Group (SIG) loves having overseas members for the variety and differences they bring. One or two of them have international members as part of their committees to ensure we are representing all RPS members wherever they live. Many of the online meetings are recorded precisely so that those in different time zones can catch up when convenient to them.
The RPS has 15 different Special Interest Groups. Some are based on photographic genre, others on technology. Why not take a look at them and what each has to offer. www.rps.org/ groups Take a wander around their web pages and maybe even book on to some of the online events. If you are dedicated to a specific genre and wish to consider doing a Distinction why not join that group as you can then get support in your chosen field. It can be lonely doing a Distinction without the support of others, so take full advantage of what’s on offer.
As this is my final issue leading the group of volunteers who produce this magazine I would like to thank each and every one of them for the work they do. I am sure the incoming new International Representative, Claudine Hart (see page 4/5) will continue to support and represent you all. You can contact Claudine on international@rps.org

INTRODUCTION OF CLAUDINE HART AS THE NEW RPS INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE
It is with great pleasure that we introduce Claudine Hart as the new International Representative for RPS. Claudine's appointment comes as the result of a closely contested ballot and the agreement of the Chapters.
Claudine brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the role, with a background in international relations and an impressive track record of fostering cross-cultural collaborations.
Her dedication to advancing the mission of RPS and her vision for the future promises to bring about significant advancements for our organization.
As we welcome Claudine Hart to this position, we look forward to the new opportunities and initiatives that will undoubtedly emerge under her leadership. Her commitment to excellence, coupled with her dynamic and inclusive approach, will serve to strengthen our global community and enhance our collective impact.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Claudine Hart and invite all members to join us in supporting her as she embarks on this exciting new role.

Claudine Hart - New International Representative
Hello, I’m Claudine and I’m a dual English / German national, born and raised in London, UK and currently living in Basel, Switzerland.
I am very pleased to have been appointed the international representative role and I look forward to liaising with you over the coming months to hear your thoughts, interests and wishes as an international member. Our aim is to further develop the international community and our support to existing members around the world. To provide you with information about the RPS whether events, qualifications, courses, challenges or our chapters, and to continue to highlight some of the fantastic photographic endeavours of our international members!
By way of introduction, my background over the past 30 years is in communications and managing programmes of work across Europe and internationally. My first job was with a print and reprographic business which started my long-running interest in design, photography and the printed image. I have worked independently since, advising businesses from design and production agencies to large multinationals.
I completed a two year Distinctions Course in Professional and Applied Photography, taught by Ron Frampton (FRPS) and gained my Licentiateship in 2012. Quite a few years later, I am finally working towards my Associateship! I continue to photograph digitally and with film, with a focus on travel and underwater photography, and have a love of fine-art printing in the darkroom. Over the years, I have travelled extensively across Europe, the Middle East, the Americas, Asia and Australasia and have documented this time through my photography.
You will see here a Giant Pacific Manta in the Revillagigedo Islands in Mexico, part of a series of underwater images which reflects my love of scuba diving, the peace it brings and the strong connection I have with the ocean. I have dived for over past 30 years now and qualified as a diving instructor in 2008 so most of the time I would rather be underwater!
I look forward to hearing from you and please do get in touch! international@rps.org

PHOTOGRAPHING THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
In this issue of the International Newsletter, Mahesh Viswanadha takes us into the mesmerizing world of glassware photography. What started as a curiosity became a journey of light, reflection, and storytelling. Through careful composition, digital innovation, and an eye for detail, Mahesh transforms transparent objects into captivating images.
Join us as we explore this luminous art form—where every glass tells a story, and light becomes the storyteller.

Photography has always been a quiet fascination for me. Yet, until a few months ago, I had never delved into the niche of glassware photography. It was an online course that sparked my curiosity. I signed up with the sole intention of exploring something new, but little did I know, it would open up an entirely different dimension of storytelling.
A Collector’s Passion
To dive into this world, I began collecting unique glasses, each piece an artwork of its own. Shapes fascinated me the most; a single glass could whisper a story or evoke an emotion.
My collection grew to include not just locally sourced glasses but also treasures ordered from Denmark and the US. Each one has its unique essence—a diamond-cut glass that feels regal, a delicate flute that sings of love birds, or a bulb-shaped piece that sparks creativity. Over time, my shelf became a gallery of characters, waiting to come alive in photographs.

Building Narratives Through Glass
Glassware photography is storytelling with objects. Every frame has a hero object, supported by other pieces that enrich the composition. Depending on the story I want to tell, I use anywhere from three to seven objects. A dancing couple might take centre stage, with the others adding layers to the narrative. The play of light, reflections, and diffraction is the magic that ties everything together.
The most enchanting aspect of this style is the diffraction—the way light bends and refracts through glass. It’s unpredictable and equally mesmerising.
Clouds Background © Mahesh Viswanadha

A Digital Evolution
Initially, backgrounds were created manually and printing, and sticking them behind the glassware was cumbersome and limited the creative possibilities.
But digitalisation has transformed this process. Today, I design vibrant backgrounds in Photoshop and display them on my TV. The screen becomes a canvas, dynamically changing to find the perfect match for my composition. A cosmic swirl, a serene forest, or abstract geometric shapes—each background gives a new life to the glassware.

Mastering the Details
Glassware photography is not for the impatient. The objects demand pristine cleanliness; even a minute speck or fingerprint can ruin a shot. I’ve learned to wear gloves while setting up compositions, treating each piece like a fragile treasure.
Lighting is another meticulous process. Shadows can make or break the photograph, and balancing them is an art in itself. I place a mirror beneath the objects to reflect light evenly and reduce unwanted shadows, while a top light adds brilliance to the scene.
Water sometimes enters the frame, bringing with it an extra layer of complexity. Distilled water, free of particles and bubbles, is carefully poured using a syringe for precise control.
For certain shots, I capture the drop of water mid-fall, setting my Nikon Z9 on a timer and executing the moment with precision.

Crafting Compositions
Before arranging the glassware, I often sketch the composition—a triangle, an L-shape, or a circular arrangement. This pre-planning minimises movement and keeps the glass spotless. The process of arranging these delicate objects demands patience and an eye for balance. It’s almost meditative, as I tweak each piece to find harmony in the frame.

The Shelf of Stories
My glassware shelf has become a source of inspiration—a treasure trove of possibilities. Each time I stand before it, I envision a new story. Once the objects are selected, they’re placed carefully in front of the TV. The backgrounds come to life one after the other as I click away, experimenting with angles, light, and reflections.
What started as a hobby has become an artistic journey. Glassware photography is still an underappreciated style, perhaps because of the intricacies involved. Yet, for me, the challenges are what makes it so fulfilling. The satisfaction of seeing a perfectly composed shot, where light, glass, and story converge, is unparalleled.
Each photograph feels like a small miracle—an ephemeral moment captured forever. Behind the lens, I’ve learned patience, precision, and the beauty of imperfection. It’s a craft that requires me to slow down, to truly see the interplay of light and material, and to celebrate the extraordinary in the ordinary.
And as I continue this journey, I’m excited to see where the light will take me next.

EXPLORING PHOTOGRAPHY
ACROSS CONTINENTS: AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. MARTIN WALE LRPS
In this interview, Martin shares his journey from the UK to Canada, driven by career opportunities and a desire for space and nature. A longtime photographer, he reflects on how the move influenced his work, from landscapes to wildlife observation on Vancouver Island.
Q: What prompted you to move from the UK, and were you an RPS member before going to Canada?
A. My wife and I came to Canada because I was offered what sounded like a dream job, with removal expenses, in a great location. We’d come to the conclusion that we would never be able to afford to retire somewhere we’d really like in the UK, so I had been building my training, experience and contacts with a view to a move. We started in 2008, just in time for the credit crunch, so not everything was good. I never subscribed to the “grass is greener” - it’s just different grass, and there are up- and downsides of any such move.
We left partly because the UK is just so crowded. We live on (or near) Vancouver Island, off the West Coast of Canada. The Island itself is about the same size as England, with a population of about 900,000. There are large areas where there are few people.
I really miss the historical depth of the UK. Here, non-indigenous history isn’t more than a couple of centuries and many of the buildings are wood and thus relatively short-lived. As a photographer this makes a radical difference. The other aspect relates to landscape - here on the West (“Wet”) Coast, it rains for three months in the winter but then the summers are warm and often without rain for weeks, although these days we get smoke from wildfires. If you climb in the UK for even 300m then you’ll usually be rewarded by a decent view. Here, you’ll start surrounded by trees; after two hours of hard climbing you’ll still be surrounded by trees and probably not able to see very much at all.
I started taking photographs when I was at school because I can’t draw - I wanted to draw natural history. So I started in the Phot Soc at school but read widely and was largely self-taught. I came to LRPS after university and after higher professional training by doing City & Guilds in photography - this was great, giving me systematic taught and practical experience, some exposure to the principles of the main genres, and confidence to try things out. I’ve always been an early adopter. I still build on that framework now.
Q. What are the drawbacks of being an international member compared to a UK member?
A. The main issue is that so much of the RPS’s activity is UK-based and very introspective. I’ve done some of the short courses as an international and have thoroughly enjoyed them (even if the start is 3am). These days my inbox fills with emails from Billetto for events which are 7000 miles away (which is frankly just irritating after a while).
Q. Do you belong to a camera club in Canada and if so do you see much difference in photographic styles there as opposed to the UK?
A. Apart from at school I’ve always been busy and often worked out-of-hours or on-call (I’m a doctor). Clubs were always difficult to fit in - even the regular meetings, let alone carving out sufficient time to do assignments and competitions. So, since school I’ve never been in a club. My style is my own, although I’ve picked up bits from other photographers or from exhibitions.
Key influences are Heather Angel, Don McCullin, and latterly Robert Harvey (his advice that “if your feet aren’t wet then you’re standing in the wrong place” also works for natural history). Most of the photographs I shoot are of natural subjects, but the technology is amazing now and I can do things I’d always wanted to do, particularly incorporating motion.
Since 2017 I’ve run my own consulting business, so can work as I want to, and finally (theoretically) can make time to take and work with my photographs.
Q. Thinking about your own photography has being in Canada altered what you like to shoot?
A. We moved to Canada for space, outdoors, and activities such as kayaking. My photography followed along the same lines - landscape and natural history. Since 2014 we’ve lived part of the time on a small, steep, heavily forested island in the Salish Sea, with a year-round population of about 850. This has given me the opportunity to get to know a small area of forest and sea front very well. This is not the single visit of the tourist - it’s about observing the natural environment and its inhabitants, learning about how they live, and observing changes with the seasons and years.
I was also President of a small environmental non-profit (see www.simres.ca ) for five years, giving me a particular interest in whales. We equipped four (initially) of our more tech-savvy observers with Canon SX70 cameras, which is a 20MP camera with a 65x optical zoom - the results were very gratifying, and we’ve since extended the experiment. This is something I’d like to write up when I have time.
Q. How do you feel the RPS or Digital Imaging group could improve things for international members?
A. I’ve thought about this a lot. Currently, if I mention the RPS to almost anyone here, it’s met with blank looks, even from the photographers. I’d like to reply, separately, perhaps as a letter for publication.
Q. Please do show us your own favourite images and tell us why they are important to you?
A. I’ve a shortlist of three photos.

TOKYO X LONDON BUS A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
Kazue Suzuki, Tokyo, Japan
The Royal Photographic Society is delighted to showcase the captivating work of Kazue Suzuki, a Tokyo-based photographer who has devoted her art to capturing the nostalgic allure of 1960s London buses as they navigate through Japan’s vibrant capital. Her project, Tokyo x London Bus, serves as a visual bridge between eras and cultures, fusing history with the contemporary urban landscape.

London's red double-decker buses are an iconic symbol of British culture, instantly recognisable and steeped in history. But what happens when these classic vehicles find a new lease on life in a city halfway across the globe? In my project, Tokyo x London Bus, I document the journey of 1960s London buses as they navigate the streets of Tokyo, creating an unexpected yet mesmerising fusion of the past and present.
These buses, once traversing London’s bustling streets, now meander through the vibrant districts of Tokyo—passing landmarks such as Tokyo Tower, the historic Marunouchi Station, the British Embassy, and the cherry blossom-lined avenues of Roppongi. Their presence in Japan is more than a mere visual curiosity; it represents a moving piece of history, meticulously preserved by skilled mechanics who ensure every detail of their classic design remains intact.
This project, going beyond mere nostalgia, explores how objects from one cultural landscape can acquire renewed purpose in another. The London buses, with their vintage charm, provide a striking contrast to Tokyo’s ultra-modern architecture, yet they seamlessly integrate into the city’s vibrant energy. The result is a photographic series that transcends time and geography, evoking both memories of the past and the ever-evolving spirit of the present.
In June 2024, I had the privilege of showcasing this work in a solo exhibition, sharing the beauty of this unique cross-cultural connection with audiences. As these historic vehicles continue their journey through Tokyo, I hope my images inspire a deeper appreciation for the stories embedded in the objects around us — reminding us that history is forever in motion.

DECEMBER 25TH CHALLENGE
For many, the 25th of December is recognised as Christmas Day, although this day is not celebrated in all countries or by all religions. Therefore, observing the events that occur on this date around the world would be both intriguing and educational.
The challenge was to take an image which shows a typical day for you on December 25th. Are you having a party on the beach, attending a religious gathering, or sharing a celebratory meal with family?
Perhaps it’s simply a normal day, and you’re scrubbing the kitchen floor or heading to work.
Let us take a look at what our international members were doing on 25 December 2024.

RPS Indian Chapter — Join us for a Series of Webinars on RPS Distinctions
The RPS India Chapter is launching a series of webinars designed to guide aspirants through the RPS distinctions process.
These sessions will help participants understand the requirements and provide valuable insights on how to prepare. We will initially focus on LRPS and ARPS distinctions, featuring talks by RPS members who have successfully achieved their distinctions in the past few years.
The webinars are open to all, but priority will be given to members of the RPS India Chapter.
Participation is complimentary.
If you are interested in attending or have earned an RPS distinction within the last three years and would like to share your experience as a speaker, don't hesitate to get in touch with us at india@rps.org.

Michel eCircle for those living in the Australian time zones.

What is an eCircle?
A small group of members that get together online once a month to show and share images. Michel recently moved to Australia and thought sharing images with members in his nearby time zones might be fun. So, if you live in the coloured zone of the map, why not get in touch and join the photo-sharing community?

WHAT IS A RPS SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP (SIG) AND WHY WOULD YOU JOIN ONE?
Members elect to join groups and these are an optional extra to membership of the RPS.
Often they are based on a specific genre or aspect of photography that individuals closely align themselves with. The easy ones to identify with are Landscape, Nature, Travel etc and the less obvious might include Women in Photography or Digital Imaging as examples. At the end of this text is a list of all the various groups, a link to their web page, and a short statement about their purpose.
Each group is funded by a small annual subscription and sometimes additional fees for talks, workshops or specific activities. Because they are run exclusively by volunteers, who do not charge for the work they do to organise the various programmes, costs are kept to a minimum and what can be gained from membership represents amazing value for individuals. The staff team at RPS House run workshops, Distinctions, produce The Journal, and organise exhibitions; the life blood of the RPS is via the community groups.
Through community group membership you can engage with a wider variety of opportunities, gain inspiration, work closely with other RPS members. All groups are now considering how they can make more available to international members by recording meetings or putting them on at varying times.
It is worth following the links to the various web pages to see for yourself what each SIG offers. A few of them have even made short videos for the benefit of international members, which you can find HERE

The Team

JANET HAINES ARPS international@rps.org
I joined the RPS in 2003 when I aspired to try for my LRPS. Since then I have been a member of several committees, an LRPS panel assessor for a while, two years as an RPS Trustee, five years as the Benelux Chapter Organiser when I was living in the Netherlands, plus I am the Chair of the Digital Imaging Group.
My aim always is to make the RPS member experience as good as we possibly can wherever an individual lives in the world. For us all to get as much out of our photography and being part of a community of like-minded individuals, in which we inspire and help each other to progress in our chosen field of image making.
CHRIS RENK germany@rps.org
I joined the RPS in 2013 while living in the UK. After relocating back to Germany, the German Chapter asked me to join their Group and participate in their activities. In 2015, I became the Chapter Organizer and kept the role since then. Additionally, I took on the role of Web administrator and editor of the chapter’s publications. In 2015, the Chapter published its first magazine, the “Chapter Newsletter.” At this time, the newsletter was published irregularly. In 2019, we started publishing our magazine quarterly and called it “eMagazine.”
From 2020 onwards, the chapter and I expanded our involvement in the RPS's online education program. We conducted a diverse range of online talks and workshops, broadening our reach and impact. Supporting the international members by providing this newsletter is also first-line support to the German Chapter members!

SOMDUTT PRASAD somprasad@gmail.com

I joined the RPS in 2022 and regret not having done so earlier! As a busy medical specialist for two decades in the UK and then another decade back in India, photography took a back seat to my profession as an ophthalmologist. The Covid pandemic was a time of refocusing and re-evaluation. I decided to spend more time on my hobby and thus started entering some competitions.
This helped me appreciate the nuances of photography and as my understanding of photography increased, I began to take an interest in various societies, including the RPS, The PSA (Photographic Society of America) and FIP (Federation of Indian Photography). I have always believed that if you learn something from an organization's activities, you should try to contribute something back to the organisation. So I volunteered for this position. International members often feel isolated from the main activities in the UK and I hope this newsletter will help the worldwide membership build bridges amongst ourselves and with UK members.
SYLVIE DOMERGUE sylvielft@gmail.com
Lives in Madagascar and knows only too well how isolated an international member of the RPS can feel.
"When I discovered the Royal Photographic Society in 2019 as an international member, I knew that I had found my haven of peace and my home of artistic creation, within a team whose human values I admire , as well as the quality requirements, and the deep commitment to allow its members, wherever they are in the world, to participate in the great adventure that the art of photography represents in its different aspects."

In 2018 started working towards my ARPS with the help of Chapter’s study group in Rotterdam and in 2021 I got my ARPS with a documentary panel “Damaged Retinas” a series of images that demonstrates how I see the world. As I have now stopped working, I have the time to volunteer for the RPS Benelux Chapter, As a former software engineer my skills can used to help the Chapter and thus I became the Benelux Chapter webmaster in the Autumn of 2022, expanding the Chapter’s website and in 2023 I was asked to help relaunch the chapter’s eJournal by becoming its editor. Now I will be adding the role of International Web Administrator to my list of existing roles.
CHRISTINE ETHERINGTON FRPS — christineeltherington18@gmail.com
I joined the RPS Scottish Region in 2014 where I attended advisory days, Photo forums and distinction advisory days. Intending to take my photographic hobby to the next level I gained my LRPS distinction in November 2014. Two years later I decided to try for my Associateship which I gained in 2016. In 2022 I was successful in gaining my fellowship in documentary.
All of this was made possible with the encouragement and support of the Royal Photographic Society. In 2018 I became the RPS Scottish Regional Treasurer until my emigration to New Zealand in 2021. Having the experience of gaining my fellowship whilst living in New Zealand I feel I am well placed to encourage international members.
