Planning is well underway for the Roanoke Jaycees 2nd annual Big Lick Beertopia happening on June 9, 2012. Beertopia celebrates the world of craft beer by bringing brewers from around the country to LewisGale Field, home of the Salem Red Sox, for tastings, musical entertainment, and philanthropy. Last year, we held the first ever Beertopia (then known as Brewtopia), featuring samples for over 20 craft breweries. The event was held as a benefit for the Camp VA Jaycees, CHIP of the Roanoke Valley, and the Salem-

Roanoke County Food Pantry. We were able to donate 60% of our profits to these great causes. Our goal this year is to expand on last year’s success and make the event bigger and better! In addition to delicious brews, the event will feature two local bands, The Materia Project and Corey Hunley. The Materia Project wows its audiences with its infectious funk/soul/roots/ fusion sound while local singer-songwriter Corey Hunley inspires listeners through a mix of acoustic, blues, and folk melodies.

Beertopia 2011 was named new project of the year by the Virginia Jaycees and was awarded the Kirkpatrick-Walker Award. As a new feature this year, the Jaycees have partnered with the Star City brewers Guild to host a home brew competition. Contestants can enter in up to three of four categories. “Dinner Time” at the Ronald McDonald House Most of us would agree, there’s nothing like a warm meal at the end of a long, hard day. For families staying at the Roanoke Ronald McDonald House, these muchneeded meals are provided by groups like the Jaycees on a regular basis. On Sunday, February 26, the Jaycees had 10 volunteers help prepare a buffet-style taco dinner with Jaycees Volunteers mugging for the camera after a fun all the fixings for the Ronald McDonald House families. Memevening of meal preparation for the Ronald McDonald bers cooked, chopped, baked, and House “Dinner Time” program. cleaned their ways to a delicious

meal. Even after food preparation, members had fun milling around the kitchen sharing stories and getting to know one another! The Ronald McDonald House “Dinner Time” program is just one of our regular service events. Our next dinner preparation will be sometime in December. We look forward to getting together again to help bring a touch of home to those so far away from their normal homes.

‘Fear Factory’ Out-Scares Competition, Wins 2011 Broom Hilda Award It may have been the new kid on the block, but the ’Fear Factory’ scared its way to top honors. The Roanoke Jaycee’s ‘Fear Factory’ outspooked the competition to win the Virginia Jaycee’s 2011 Broom Hilda Award for Best Haunted House. Produced for six nights in October, the Fear Factory

took over six weeks of planning and organizing. Volunteers helped throughout the event in a number of capacities including behind-thescenes, taking tickets, guiding visitors, and of course, as the frightful actors. As a community tie-in, visitors could donate canned food items for a dollar off

admission. Other proceeds benefited CHIP of Roanoke Valley, Feeding America, and Camp Virginia Jaycee. A ghoul time was had by all and we can hardly wait for another year of fear! Visit roanokehauntedhouse.com for more information on this year’s Fear Factory! se.com

Member Spotlight—Ross Parisi Ross Parisi joined the Jaycees when he relocated to Roanoke in fall 2011 as a way to get involved in the community and meet new people. Since then, Ross has been busy helping us put on our annual “Fear Factory” haunted house and planning Big Lick Beertopia 2012.

Originally from Erie, PA, Ross earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. He works for GE Transportation and manages the Norfolk Southern locomotive parts account. In his free time, Ross enjoys

staying active, meeting new people, and watching sports. His favorite Jaycee memory so far? “Spending the weekend in Gatlinburg, TN on the 2012 Jaycee retreat. It was great to get away for a weekend and have a fantastic time with great friends."

“You won’t find Casper the friendly ghost here… Go ahead take a tour if you dare. It’s a bloody good time inside the fear factory.” -WDBJ7 News Story

Jaycee Creed We Believe... That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth's great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

Winter Retreat in Gatlinburg, Tennessee From March 9 to the 11th, Jaycees gathered in scenic Gatlinburg, TN for a weekend getaway. Members ate, drank, and relaxed their way to a good time around town and at the grand mountain cabin. We asked a few members to recount their favorite moment during the retreat: "I think everyone had a great time together. I enjoyed bonding with some of the girls during our shopping trip on Saturday. Anytime you get a good group of Jaycees away for the weekend, fun times will ensue!" Lindsay Hurt "Great times with great friends - all around a fantas-

tic trip"-Ross Parisi "I enjoyed relaxing, laughing, and catching up with everyone during the weekend. I also enjoyed taking first place in the unofficial Jaycee Putt Putt Miniature Golf Championship!" -Kevin Hurt The Winter Retreat is just one of the Jaycees many fun get-togethers. Over the past year, we have also held a pool party, Red Sox night, Virginia Tech tailgate, Holiday party, and Superbowl party just to hang out and relax together. Have an idea for a fun event? Post your idea on the Facebook group or email it!
