The event took over six weeks to plan and organize. Many volunteers were recruited to help design the various room scenes and serve as actors each night. Last year’s Fear Factory was awarded the Virginia Jaycee’s Broom Hilda Award for Best Haunted House. This year’s events took place in the same location and had about the same attendance. Also similar to 2011, visitors could donate a canned food item for a dollar off of admission. At the end, the Jaycees were delivered a pickup truck load of canned food items to Feeding America Southwest Virginia. A cash donation will also be made to Camp Virginia Jaycee.
For Auld Land Syne, My Dear... Seasons greetings current and former Roanoke Jaycee Members! We wish you a joyous holiday season and a very happy new year. We are taking this time reflect upon a on noteworthy year for the Jaycees. With your help, we’ve been able to reach out further into the community and make a greater impact than ever before.
This year, we held two very large and very successful events—Big Lick Beertopia and Fear Factory. Thank you to those who dedicated their time to planning and putting on these unique events. In between the beer and frights, we got out into the community helping many other local organizations
meet their needs. We collected canned goods for the hungry, cheered on runners at 4 on the Fourth, and elbowed with celebrities at a golf tournament. Again, thank you for your support. We look forward to making 2013 another hallmark year. -The 2012 Roanoke Jaycees

Big Lick Beertopia 2012 Raises Over $2,000 for Local Charities “There can’t be good living where there is not good drinking.” Benjamin Franklin c1745 On June 9th, the Roanoke Jaycees brought good living and good drinking to the Valley by presenting the second-annual Big Lick Beertopia (formerly Brewtopia). Over 1,400 people—a 40% increase over last year’s festival came out to the Salem Red Sox Stadium to taste beers made by craft breweries located throughout the country. Live music by local artists the Materia Project and Corey Hunley provided a steady groove throughout the event and a corn toss tournament provided additional entertainment. New this year, the Jaycees partnered with the Star City Brewers Guild to host a home brew competition. Contestants entered their best recipes in four different categories. Kevin Campbell was declared winner of the Home Brew Competi-
tion with his “Babymaker” American Barleywine. Of the money raised this year, over $2,000 was given to local charities including CHIP, Easter Seals, the Food Pantry, and Camp Virginia Jaycee. “Big Lick Beertopia was a huge success this year and we’ve heard nothing but positive feedback,” said Kevin Hurt, one of this year’s driving forces behind the event. “Beertopia is an incredible fundraiser for our chapter as well as a great opportunity for our members to develop their leadership skills. Next year should be even better!” The success of Beertopia will hopefully be replicated at next year’s event which is tentatively scheduled for June 8th. Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss out on one of the Valley’s premier craft beer festivals and a great opportunity to support the Roanoke Jaycees!

Jaycees Cheer on 4 on the Fourth Racers
The Jaycees kicked off Independence Day by helping with the 4 on the Fourth race in downtown Roanoke. Our volunteers made sure the course was safe and clear while also cheering on the 300+ participants as they run and/or walked the four miles. That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth's great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life.
JJ Redick Celebrity Golf Tournament When the JJ Redick Foundation sponsored its 2nd Celebrity Golf Tournament on August 18, 2012, the Roanoke Jaycees were there to provide the support needed for a successful event. Fifteen Jaycees helped in various capacities throughout the tournament. Volunteers valet parked cars, ran the hole-inone contest, assisted with putting, and oversaw the threepoint contest. In addition, support was provided for both the tournament pre– and postparties. The event raised $110,000 for CHIP and Children’s Miracle Network in 2011 and they
hope to increase that amount this year. The JJ Redick Foundation was created by NBA player and Roanoke-native JJ Redick to benefit underprivileged youth. Their mission fits well with the Jaycees goal of creating positive change in communities by addressing the needs of others.
