Page Level Permissions In a previous lesson we learned how to share a site with collaborators. Sharing a site for collaboration is great for both teachers and students. You might not want to share a complete site with someone. In this case, Google Sites offers the option to provide page level permissions. Page level permissions grant people access to only certain pages on a site for editing or viewing if your site is not public. To provide page level permissions, we need to enable this feature. Click the share button.
1
Click the Enable page-level permissions button.
A permissions dialogue will appear. Click the Turn on PageLevel Permissions button.
2
A panel will open with a list of the pages on your site.
I'll click on the Language Arts page to give someone permission to edit this page only.
3
On the right panel, click on the change permission option.
A permission configuration module will open. The automatic permission is set to provide the same permissions as the owner of the site. Click on Use custom permissions.
4
The permissions will automatically be granted to anyone we invite to edit the site. We don't want to automatically grant permission to new users. Click on the radio button to not add new users to this page.
Click the save button to finish setting the permissions for this page.
This will give us more control when adding collaborators,
5
The icon for the Language Arts page will change to indicate this page has separate permissions in the site. The other pages will share the same permission as the site.
We will add a person to collaborate on the Language Arts page. The share option can only be granted from the site level. Click on the site name.
6
Scroll down the page to the Invite people section.
Enter the email address of a collaborator. The collaborator is automatically given edit access. This edit access is granted to the complete site and we don't want to do that.
7
Click the send button to complete the invitation process.
The person has view only rights to the site.
8
To grant our new collaborator rights to the Language Arts page, click on the Language arts page.
On the right panel you will see the collaborator lightly faded out.
9
Click on the permissions pull down menu and select can edit.
Save the changes. This person can now edit this page and this page only. You can grant this person permission to other pages by configuring the page, and you can grant multiple people access to edit the same page if needed.
10
The collaborator cannot edit other pages without the right permissions. Let's look at the math page.
This person does not have edit access to the math page.
11
If we look at the collaborators point of view, he will find the shared site in the Google Sites app. This collaborator will see the complete site because we gave him view rights to the site.
To edit the Language Arts page, the collaborator will click on the Language Arts menu link.
12
The Language Arts page will be the only page with the edit button option and the option to add pages. The collaborator will be able to edit this page and any pages created under this page.
