In Norway, the value of exports of cod, saithe and haddock in August have been good (+7% on last year’s exports). In terms of volume, exports were up by 20%, mostly attributable to increased exports of whole frozen fish. A more positive price trend is also reported for a number of products, in particular frozen haddock, where the average

Importers of wet-salted cod fillets (both Gadus macrocephalus and Gadus morhua) have started their purchases and are anticipating a price rise during the period of major consumption in September, October and November. Prices for wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus Morhua) from fresh raw material are presently increasing.

The Peruvian hake fishing quota is finishing this month, although the new quota will start in July. Demand, apparently still being affected by over-production of Alaska Pollock, is not increasing. Peruvian hake may now be exported to Russia, subject to the completion of clearance processes as required by the Russian Federation veterinary authorities. FLATFISH Turbot - In Spain, origin: Spain

Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific is moderate. Thai Tuna - Pacific Ocean packers have reported an increase in demand for finished goods. Eastern Pacific catches are below average with yellowfin making up 60% of the catch. As a result, the skipjack price has increased to USD 1 450/tonne ex vessel Manta. The yellowfin price has also increased, to USD 2 300/tonne, despite the high proportion of

Vessels in the Atlantic Ocean have reported very slow fishing and the local canneries are now low on raw material. This situation has caused the skipjack and yellowfin prices to rise to EUR 1 075 and EUR 2 120/tonne ex vessel Abidjan, respectively.

On the European market, the skipjack price increased to EUR 1 150/tonne CFR Spain while the yellowfin price increased to EUR 2 350/tonne CFR Spain due to continuing poor supply from the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. The market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins is stable at USD 8 200/tonne DDP Italy.

SMALL PELAGICS On 11 June, the European Commission and the Faroe Islands reached a political understanding to end their dispute over the management of Atlanto-Scandian herring in the North-East Atlantic, following lengthy dialogue between Faroese and EU officials over recent months. However, this decision has created a lot of concern among the Northern Pelagic Working Group and the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association, as the 2014 quota for herring announced by the Faroe Islands is still far beyond scientific recommendations. The Icelandic fishery for blue whiting is now coming to an end, with the total catch officially at 156 786 tonnes against the 189 358 tonne quota.
