MASS HOUSING Sem IV | HOUSING Location: Banaras, UP

Housing should respond to the needs of individuals, so that they have a dwelling which makes them part of a community. Housing is a whole in itself and it is also a part of the larger whole of the city. It is about the sharing of resources and support systems that a city offers. The studio exercise was to design dwelling units- about 60 dwelling units of a community. The focus of the studio was to address the contextual and cultural dimension of space. Selected site is situated in the rich fabric of a town with cultural diversity. The site is located in Varanasi. Mixed demographics of 60 families as identified are current residents of Banaras These families are to be housed in three types of units. Common community space is also an integral part of the housing design.

The studio based on institutional design focused on developing various key concepts, techniques, and thought process at an institutional scale. House of Knowledge as a program was given to explore ideas, to envision and imagine spaces which were best suited to it. The studio was structured as a process of developing, exploring and rational thinking. The program was set on the basis of the developing spaces which include exhibition spaces, reading areas, gathering spaces, cafeteria etc. The site, in CN campus, Ambawadi, Ahmedabad, has a wide range of greenery and a calm atmosphere. The site had a huge potential and challenges providing a base for the exploration and understanding of the House of Knowledge as an Institution.

HERITAGE CELL Sem III | MATERIAL STUDIO Location: Old city, Ahmedabad
The studio aimed at developing the material understanding in architectural and structural aspects and exploring its potential. The material chosen for the studio was wood. It focused on designing spaces through modules. As a part of the process for module design, it can be a smaller space used for services or circulation and other spaces were designed by repeating those.

NUBIAN VAULT
Elliptical arch. An arch having the shape of half an ellipse; in its construction, the ellipse is often approximated by three adjoining circular arcs.
Nubian vault is a type of curved surface forming vaulted structure. It is made from mud bricks. I t makes use of pure earth without the need of timbe
Process: The position of brick was continuously monitored using a thread. The location, formwork, no. Of bricks, arrangement, mortar thickness was calculated. The form work was placed and the brick masonry was done.
Process: First according to span and heigh catenary shape for Nubian vault was foun by plotting points on graph using gold chain Shape was traced on the wall. Mortar wa made using sand and mud at the ratio of 2:3
