About the Photographer “A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people.”
A
s one of today’s foremost contemporary female photographers, Annie Leibovitz has captured the portraits of celebrities around the world. Her gritty, personal style has been her signature over the years, and she has captured the likenesses of so many celebrities including John Lennon, Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Moore, and more recently, the Cruise family. The essence of her work brings the viewer closer to her subjects’ personalities and makes them more accessible in spite of their iconic status. In her early years, Annie enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute intent on studying painting. It was not until she traveled to Japan with her mother the summer after her sophomore year that she became interested in photography. Her amateur portfolio landed her a job at Rolling Stone magazine in 1970, and she became chief photographer in 1973. She also served as the official photographer for the Rolling Stones’ 1975 world tour.

Her AMEX work earned her the coveted Clio Award, the equivalent of an Academy Award, from the advertising industry. Annie was also honored with her own exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. in 1991, which was based on her published book, Photographs: Annie Leibovitz 1970 –1990. She was also named the official photographer for the 1996 US Olympic Team; her work was published in Vanity Fair and Sports Illustrated and published in her photography book, Olympic Portraits.
