The development of Bercy is one of the most successful example of contemporary urban planning. It created a neighborhood out of nothing on a site that initially seemed to be an unpromising one. The urban program was diverse and developed with the objective to create a real living in an autonomous neighborhood along with the park, the Cour Saint-Emilion and other amenities besides housing. Site: The site is a linear strip of land in east of Paris situated in on the south-west by the river Seine and the highway that goes along it. At the north -west of the site, there is the rail tracks that leads to the Gare de Lyon. Just opposite of the park is the National Library Complex (Bibliotheque) connected with a pedestrian bridge. Historical Background: Bercy once was the historic center of the wine bottling industry, used as a warehousing area for wine before it was transformed into an entertainment district. Since it was situated along the Seine, it allowed the easy unloading of cargoes from upstream. Because of the Fer-

miers Generaux Wall which was build in 1780s, the site had a added advantage to be located just outside the city limit which made it not subjected to the octroi tax. The site was used for warehouse development that turned the area into Paris’s main wholesale and logistical center for wine.

8. The new Cinematheque ( former American Center designed by architect Frank Gehry) opened in 2005. During our field trip in Paris 2016, we visited the site and experienced this blend of residential, commercial, leisure and cultural spaces around the park which is one of the best example of Parisian typical redevelopment operations since the mid-1970s.

air, fire, earth, water) and four seasons through their color and forms. There are water meanders and cascades through to the romantic garden to the east, with a small lake and hillyop labyrinth. The park is directly connected to the National Library of France by Simone de Beauvoir footbridge over the Seine ( opened in 2006).

Parc de Bercy: The term “memory” is the most appropriate word which clearly expresses the physical and conceptual integration of the park site into the rest of Paris. The competition for the design of the park was won by Mrylene Ferrand, Jean-Pierre Feugas, Bernard Leroy and Bernard Huet. The park seemed like a careful incorporation of the elements of the existing industrial facilities and the new contemporary idea of landscape design. A number of old buildings are restored, some old walls are kept and aspects of topography and specially we could see the design protected a number of glorious old trees once planted to shade the warehouses. The park still contains the granite cobblestone walkways which were used to carry the barrels.

Bercy Village- Cour Saint-Emilion: The shopping street Cour Saint-Emilion is composed with a set of remarkable historic buildings rehabilitated by architect Denis Valode and Jean Pistre. Its an open air shopping center with a central pedestrian street full of restaurants and cafes. There is a movie complex at the east end of the area.

There are theree sections to the park; a broad, flat grass lawn at the northwest end and the two gardens divided by Rue J. Kessel. The eastern one is known as Yitzhak Rabin garden which is a display of a variety of garden forms and functions through history, from decorative to medicinal, to productive of food and drink; and represent the four classical elements (

The new Bercy: From 1970’s to 1998 ( when the construction of the park was completed) the municipality launched a series of construction projects in order to rehabilitate the District12 of Paris that includes the Bercy. There were also later additions to the development process. These projects are_ 1.
