HISTORIC CONTEXT _______________________________

.

The school of Athenas The Cinquecento formed part of the second phase of the Italian Renaissance during the 16th century in which Rome and Venice arose as important artistic centres in Italy. It was developed in the late 14th and early 15th centuries after the court of the Sforza of Milan revised the aesthetic assumptions of the Quattrocento that lead to severe and monumental language. The conquest of Milan by the French allowed artists to spread their artistic conceptions through the Italian territory and especially in Rome, after the return of the papal court from Avignon and the patronage of a new generation of popes.

The Cinquecento includes two phases: it begins with the denominated High Renaissance; the last years of the 15th century (by the first decades of the 15th century) the Quattrocento had reached its peak disposing of features typical of classical arts and the first decades of the 16th century). It finishes with the denominated Low Renaissance or Mannerism. The Cinquecento featured the culmination of the perfection of the artistic language making way to Renaissance Classicism. Furthermore, it was also linked to proportion and the concept of symmetry and worked for the harmonic relationship of the parts of the body.
