How can a disaster be harnessed? How can one design for a changing reality?
1
This project proposes a prototypical solution to the earthquake hazard that Beirut faces, channeling an engineering necessity into a socioecological opportunity. It is an intervention on a cluster of existing buildings in an aim to create socially, seismically, and ecologically resilient shelter nodes within the city, functioning both pre and post-earthquake.

Bridging platforms serve as extentions of balconies used in the daily life of the residents. They would also serve as extra space for post-earthquake shelter.

The Wormhole |Redesigning the Brooklyn Waterfront City and Landscape Atelier - IUAV, Venice, Italy Site: Brooklyn, New York Team: Alessandra Peracin, Nicolo Calandrini, Nicolo Franchetto
ˈwəːmhəʊl/ noun A theoretical passageway or shortcut linking separate points in spacetime.
5
This project proposes a ‘wormhole’ tackling the transportation limitations between Manhattan and Brooklyn through envisioning the role and potential of the Brooklyn Waterfront on an architectural and urban scale.
The wormhole passes through each building, giving life to a space of interaction and flexibility. It
eventually explodes in a reused industrial building, forming irregular spaces with unique programs.

Spaces in Badaro can be read through a vertical layering of functions which dictates the interactions between the different use patterns of the public and the private. For a place to be private, it should not neccessarily be located away from the street. I chose to use this layering to compose the multifunctional program of the project which materializes as an addition to an existing school building.

Biker’s In-between Site: Mousaitbeh, Beirut, Lebanon
A 60-100cm gap between two buildings was used as a potential site for a biker’s shelter. Thus, space efficiency was a core driver of the whole assembly. The biker, on-the-move, dynamic, and agile, requires a similarly flexible house which responds to his needs. The in-between aims to reconnect the biker with his surroundings and to enable him to make weather observations that affect his biking experiences.

Table-Window Mechanism I devised this window mechanism in which the window transforms into a table. Opening to the inside opens up the table without opening the window in case of windy days. Opening to the outside opens up the table along with the glass panel - for good weather days.

Massing: Compact to reduce heat loss
Site: Naas, Bikfaya, Lebanon

The program comes as a revival of the old agricultural practices on the terraced site, targetting a community for cooks and culinary students. Climate responsive modules come together to maximize the use of daylight and natural ventilation and to promote heat gain during the cold winters of the mountainous region.

Nafas (Arabic for ‘breath’) is a 1:1 urban furniture interactive intervention that mimics the movement of the human lung, in an aim to raise awareness regarding Beirut’s air pollution. It translates the level of the air pollutants measured by sensorial tools through a responsive inflatable skin composed of 160 recycled medical plastic bags supported by a parametric wooden structure. An algorithmic code was designed to receive real time data and translate it into an air-pumping simulation, inflating the bags at the same rate a lung inhales and exhales when exposed to the same quality of air.
Scissor X deployable structure for outer space
Course: Making It Team: Yasmine Atoui, Mario El Khoury
3D Printed Joinery
Scissor X is a deployable space habitation module designed to fit inside the SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Payload. The aim was to propose a system that can provide the maximum amount of habitable volume in its deployed state and the minimum amount of space in its closed state. On Earth, this approach of deployablity can be applied in prefabricated shelters that can be easily transported into areas of need and deployed in reduced amounts of time to house refugees in cases of emergency.

Extensions of the Informal W.A.Ve 2017 - IUAV, Venice, Italy Workshop Theme: Reconstruction of Syria Site: Barada River, Damascus, Syria Team: Tildem Kirtak, Sally Itani
17
Instead of imposing a particular definition of p ub l ic sp a c e on Damascus, this project aims to activate already existing elements in a way sensitive to the needs of its inhabitants. After observing the architectural trend and the afterlives of the buildings on site, one can notice the prevalent informality within the additions and alterations that these buildings undergo. Examples of such alterations are informal extensions to the buildings and shading structures on the roofs, all of which tell a lot about what the people need, since what the inhabitants choose to add is what they lack.

Exhibiting Crafts
The aim of the workshop was to propose a renovation scheme for the existing craftsmen courtyard structures called “Fondouq within the souk of Fes. 2 The data that informed the design proposal was 1 acquired through on-site work. This included observations and documentation of architectural elements, underlying production trends, space usages and occupant input. The proposed strategy focused on attracting customers by exposing the intricate process of brass and wood production, as well as installing a retractable canopy that would protect against the rain, sun, and provide a place to hang finished products.
