1. CENTER FOR HISTORICAL RESEARCH Rio, Patras, feb.-june 2013 University of Patras Faculty of Architecture

prof. Athanasios Spanomaridis with Konstantinos Chatzaras

7

This project is placed in the historical location of the vennetian castle in Rio, Patras. Observing the dynamics of the area, the new Center for Historical Reasearch is based on the concept of creating five ‘gardens’, or five areas, each one with a different thematology. Those gardens are being drawn to the center of the project where they create the actual research center. Each area contains a seperate function: housing for the researchers, a museum for the exchibits of the historical area, a library, an amphetheater, an observatory, a small port. The center of the circular formation funcions as a ‘camera’ observing each and every part of the project connecting it all together both visually and in terms of form.

2. MUSEUM OF LIVING HISTORY Patras, Feb. - June 2012 University of Patras Faculty of Architecture

Prof. Athanasios Spanomaridis with: Andreas Alevras

11

In a region of Patras that a lot of diverse activities occur, and buildings that host a variety of programmes are met, the proposed building links all of the abovementioned, maintaining a level of free, but on the same time particular public space. This space hosts exhibits from Patras’ commercial history, as it allows the passenger to view these exhibits from a different angle of view. By passing through this mystical public space, one can choose one of two paths: Either continue walking in this space until the other end of the building, or use the elevated exhibition promenade.

12

A double layer of semi-transparent glass provides the city with a silent from noise and distraction public space, where one can experience a free museum offering two different alternatives to view the spectacles. He can either view them walking by, or go up the promenade that offers a better viewing and explanation of the exhibits of the museum.

3. TOKYO REPLAY CENTER INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION Akihabara, Tokyo, sep.2012-feb.2013 ArchMedium Student Competitions

with: A. Giannakopoulos, X. Liodi, C. Loizou

15

The competition’s site, Akihabara, is a place of diversity and superbundance in images. Hence, silence is essential for escaping from this stenuous life. Tokyo Replay Center is proposed to become a gap in the city. This gap is the necessary space in order for the silence to be materialized. In a protected volume, void is sculptured. Light circulation and an inclined atrium is designed. Two prisms come up; one is the spectacle and the other the spectator. In the first volume, the users take part in the spectacle as karaoke singers. In the other, the visitors can watch the live performance, while moving freely throughout the more public sections of the building.

16

Karaoke rooms are organized vertically in the first inclined volume. On the opposite one, each floor hosts separate retail uses, each maintaining a semi-open space. A circuit that connects the edges of the outer skin links the two prisms together.

4. HOUSE OF FAIRYTALES, IDEAS COMPETITION Odense DE, nov.2013 City of Odense

with: K.Chatzaras, P. Panigyrakis, A.Alevras and N.Michelis

19

the essence of fairytales lies in the act of narrating and the intimate human contact, the theatre is quite literary the ‘house of fairytales’. Nevertheless, the leading role is given to the public space, for architecture is considered here as the “theatre” where social life takes place and does not always depends on its own theatricalization.

The project’s site lays behind the oldest still-inhabited medieval castle in Europe, in Naxos of the Aegean sea. ΑσAs the ascension to the castle is enthralling, an equivalent descent is appropriate. A descent that, apart from views of the castle itself, would incorporate elements of the local society, while respecting and highlighting the topography of the region. Project INtopia considers three axes: It offers forgotten views of the castle to the people It creates commercial space for the small artisanships of the city of Naxos It respects and highlights the district’s geography, allowing the people passing to further recognise it
