How Anti-Fatigue Matting Works Scientific Support

Standingonhardsurfacesforlongperiodscausesmusclestoconstrict, whichreducesthebloodflow.Thismakesmusclesandjointshurt,andit causesbloodtostagnate.Long-termstandingcausespronation,orexcessive flatteningofthefootandcanalsoleadtoplantarfasciitis.Lowerbackpainis highestinworkerswhostand4hoursormoreperday.

EarlystudiessuchasMorgora(1972)showedthattheincidenceoflowerback painwashighestinthoseworkerswhostoodregularlyforperiodsofmore thanfourhoursandBoussemanetal.(1982)broughttolightthatlongterm standingisadirectcauseofpainanddiscomfort.

SubsequentresearchcarriedoutbyDr.MarkRedfernandDr.DonChaffinat theCentreforErgonomics,UniversityofMichiganin1988,andPaulaHinnen andStephanKonzattheDepartmentofIndustrialEngineering,KansasState University,1994,madeobservationsofthedifferencebetweenstandingon hardfloorsversusstandingonsoftfloors.Boththeirstudiesconcludedthat matssignificantlyaffectfatigueandcomfortindifferentbodyregions.

AsnotedbyMr.Kendrick,thecushioningeffectofanti-fatiguemattingallows continuousmicro-movementsofthefeet,whichminimizesbloodpoolingin thelegs.Thereisgoodreasontobelievethatreductionoffatiguealsoreduces thepossibilityofaccidentsandimprovesgeneralworkefficiency.

Therearefewerdayslosttoinjuries,fewermedicalclaims,andcompliance withnewhealthandsafetyrequirements.
