Scarce Early Australian and New Zealand Tokens
To meet the extreme shortage of small change in the emerging Australian economy in the 1850’s and early 1860’s a large number of privately issued tokens began to appear. Although not legal tender, they were tolerated by authorities as it eased the demands of the population explosion, which was fuelled by the discovery of gold in 1851. Similarly in New Zealand, tokens were introduced in 1857 to counter a severe shortage of small denomination coins and again, although never legal tender, were tolerated until their official termination in 1897. Today, Australian and NZ tokens are highly sought after for their Historical numismatic value.
