The trend toward investing in numismatic rarities for Self Managed Super Funds has more than doubled over the last few years and this looks set to continue as an increasing number of Australians are turning to SMSF’s as an effective alternative to creating financial security towards their retirement years. This together with growing awareness of the benefits of adding rare coins and banknotes to funds, has had an unprecedented impact on market demand for numismatic rarities in Australia today.

Polymer Specimens Riding the wave of success of their predecessors The moment of truth arrives when the first printing of a new banknote series brings together the culmination of hours of painstaking skill and craftsmanship of the master engraver together with cutting edge polymer banknote technology. These are the Polymer Specimen banknote issues of the 21st century - the modern day equivalent of the Specimens of our past, albeit equally as important and every bit as potential!

Rare coins and banknotes are highly suitable for today’s SMSF’s, being exceptional capital growth assets ideal for medium to long term holding. The longer they are held, the greater the compounding rate and this is the key to successful investing in this niche market averaging 14 - 17%pa. Originally the playground of the collector, the strong performance in numismatic rarities has been historically proven and documented for more than half a century which is very reassuring for today’s discerning numismatic investor. More people are also drawn towards the idea of rare coins and banknotes for super funds today because of their ease of manageability and liquidity. It’s always pleasing to see clients develop a passion for their numismatic investments other than financial gain alone, however if returns are your prime motivation for buying, it isn’t necessary to closely monitor pieces that have been safely put aside in a vault type situation for long periods of time and this is of great benefit for investors today. For our clients who already have numismatic rarities in their SMSF, this time of the year presents an excellent opportunity to discuss the structure of your portfolio with your consultant who will be happy to look at specific areas to enhance your returns. If you’ve been considering setting up a SMSF in the near future, rare coins and banknotes may present an excellent avenue for adding good potential diversity to your portfolio, so this may be worth discussing with one of our numismatic consultants. We would like to advise however, that if you are looking at establishing a self managed fund sometime soon, you should seek professional advice from your financial planner first. We are pleased to direct clients to rarities with the most potential suitable for SMSF’s and other investment portfolios and assure clients of our most professional numismatic service should you have a strong interest in investing in this area. It is our desire to assist you with numismatic investing at its best and as always, we are extremely pleased to present some of the finest examples currently available for your consideration.

On a Social Note

The Rare Coin Company’s Perth Manager Wayne Fernie recently had the honour of personally presenting His Excellency Mr Ken Michael, Governor of WA with a copy of the book ‘Australian History 1901 to 2001 As Seen Through Banknotes’. The Rare Coin Company is proud to have been a major sponsor in the launch of this significant publication in November 2007 and since that time a number of copies have taken pride of place in many prominent collections.

‘The Next Generation’

Unavailability to the collecting public and genuine scarcity has rated Specimen banknotes as the top prize to aim for. Their place of archival importance with the Reserve Bank of Australia together with such limited availability and strong demand is second to none. These are the principles that underpin the enviable position Specimens command in Australian numismatics today - that of being at the forefront of the banknote market. Comprising the hallmarks of success - proven history of demand and consistent growth - Specimens are set to live up to their long standing reputation for reliable numismatic performance well into the future. This pristine quality example offers an astute choice for the discerning buyer of high profile Australian banknotes.

1758-1845 Great Britain Coinage Set Forming Part of Australia’s Proclamation Era Governor Philip Gidley’s King’s Proclamation of 1800 set the stage for the period in Australian numismatic history known as ‘The Proclamation Era’ and was so called because this period identified those coins which could be traded as legal tender in the fledgling New South Wales monetary system. Prior to the Proclamation settlers reverted to the age-old system of bartering and occasionally made do with whatever British or foreign coins came to hand and often coins were traded for their face value in weight rather than the generally accepted ‘face value’. We have had the great pleasure to assemble some of the finest examples of the British coins that form part of our Australian colonial heritage in this magnificent set, which boasts the inclusion of three coins from the prestigious Boulton Family Collection. So we urge you to consider these scarce numismatic pieces for inclusion into your private collection or investment portfolio! $30,000

Historical Note: Antonia was the daughter of Marc Antony and Octavia, wife of Nero Claudius Drusus, sister-in-law of Tiberius, mother of Claudius, and grandmother of Caligula. Renowned for her beauty and virtue, Antonia spent her long life revered by the Roman people and enjoyed many honours conferred upon her by her extended family. All her coinage was issued early in the reign of Claudius. She died around 37 A.D., possibly as a result of forced suicide ordered by Caligula.

$12,500

Historical Note: Nero became emperor at sixteen. Rome was relatively peaceful under Nero’s reign. He is most famous for his alleged actions during The Great Fire of Rome which erupted in 64AD. Popular legend claims that Nero played the fiddle at the time of the fire, an anachronism based merely on the concept of the lyre, which was associated with Nero and his performances. According to Tacitus, upon hearing news of the fire, Nero rushed back to Rome to organize a relief effort, which he paid for from his own funds. Tacitus held that the population searched for a scapegoat and rumours held Nero responsible. To diffuse blame, Nero targeted a sect called the Christians. He ordered Christians to be thrown to the dogs, while others were crucified and burned.

Sublime South African Proof Rarities 1892 One & Two Shillings Proof Pair One Shilling: Approximately 40-50 Known Two Shilling: Approximately 50-60 Known Country: South Africa

Grade: Proof (slabbed) Price:

$27,500 pair

Historical Note: De Nationale Bank der Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek was opened by the Republic’s President Paul Kruger in 1891. The bank prospered, and the passage of a Mint Act that same year provided for a coinage of gold, silver and bronze modeled after that of Great Britain. President Kruger’s portrait appeared on each coin’s obverse, with the country’s name in Afrikaans inscribed in an arc around the periphery.

Pennies from Heaven

Pre Decimal Commonwealth Banknotes

Elizabeth II Proof Halfpenny and Penny Sets & Pairs

Proven Performers!

Penny proof coins were specially struck pieces not intended for circulation and typically bear a brilliant natural tone with a mirror like matte finish. It is the combination of these factors which make the coins presented below a highly attractive investment option.

Australian pre decimal banknotes with the distinctive legend “Commonwealth of Australia” were issued from 1913 until 1961 and in top quality condition as presented here represent an impressive investment opportunity.
