e are delighted to present a superb selection of recently acquired numismatic material for our November edition of Essentially Money with some exclusive opportunities to be had in rare and choice quality items for clients looking for astute investments at this time of the year. We’ve selected some of the finest and best performing areas currently available on the market so if this is a timely opportunity for you, we recommend the rarities in the investment section of this issue as highly worthwhile acquisitions. A spectacular highlight in this edition is the Sydney Mint 1887 Victoria Jubilee Gold Two Pound Proof ~ one of only four proof examples ever struck and extremely rare. This glorious coin is without doubt an outstanding masterpiece in what can only be described as pristine museum quality. Regarded as one of the finest proof gold coins in its class, we are extremely pleased to currently offer this exclusive investment opportunity to our valued clients. Other prized acquisitions this month include a superior proof quality Perth Mint 1947 Penny. As one of the finest examples currently available from this formidable area of the numismatic market, we recommend this breathtaking piece as a classic potential performer in the making. Astute buyers interested in rare and prized Australia pre-Federation banknotes will be pleased with the superb Specimen issues featured on pages 4 and 5. Pre-Federation notes are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain, especially in higher denominations, as such it is expected that this area of the market is poised for an increase in prices in the very near future. Current price levels don’t reflect the true scarcity of these amazing rarities as they are far from reaching their full potential. Therefore we can say that with great confidence that buyers would be wise to take advantage of any opportunites at current market prices in the area.

Building Wealth Through Rare Australian Coins and Banknotes • Albany 1800 641 633 • Perth 1800 811 120

Regarded by many in the industry as the zenith of Australian numismatics, Pre-Federation and Pre-Decimal Proofs have shown some of the most reliable price growth of any rare coins over recent decades. Being tremendously rare, spectacular to behold and showcasing astonishing craftsmanship, they command top prices at auction. Only retained for archival or presentation purposes, few were minted and none reached collectors’ hands, underpinning their incredible market performance today.

Solid Gold Price Performance Presented in original “Fleur De Coin” (FDC) condition, this magnificent 22-carat gold, Sydney Mint Two Pound Proof offers a strong performing investment alternative to mainstream assets. Traditionally, premium quality gold coins have been considered a hedge against inflation or deflation and subsequently are now, more than ever being incorporated in self-managed investment funds. The Jubilee Issue ~ Queen Victoria enjoyed the longest reign (1837-1901) of any British monarch to date and therefore dominated Australian coinage designs during the 19th century. To commemorate the Golden Jubilee of her rule in 1887, gold proofs including the two pound and standard coins were minted. The two pound featured Pistrucci’s portrayal of St George slaying the dragon and an ‘S’ mintmark on the reverse, and the Jubilee head portrait of a mature Victoria on the obverse. Australia’s First Mint ~ Gold discoveries in NSW in 1851 led to unrefined gold circulating as money, so to protect official currency British Government approval was granted to establish the Sydney Mint in 1855.

Perth Mint Proof ~ Less than 20 Examples Known Extremely low mintages by world standards, superlative striking quality together with sustained price growth has ensured Australia’s Perth Mint Proofs remain one of the most highly venerated and pursued of all Australian rare coins. Their indisputable rarity and quality has earned these renowned gems great kudos as a premier performer in the numismatic market. Prior to 1955, Australian proof coins were not produced for commercial purposes but kept as the best examples for individual mints, museums or special presentation purposes. Those produced during the George V era are celebrated numismatic treasures, acclaimed as some of the rarest and most stunning numismatic items available on the world stage today. Perth Mint proofs are especially revered for their minting excellence. The ability to produce exceptional coins, has earned the Perth Mint global recognition. The example shown here was minted during Australia’s strategic post-war reconstruction period when 450,000 migrants arrived to establish a new life here.

Scarce Colonial Queensland Specimens Offer a Premier Investment Choice with Guaranteed Liquidation!

Superb Quality Pre-Federation Specimens in Numbers Less Than Ten!

Many of Australia’s Pre-Federation private trading banks are long gone but their legacy lives on through select Specimen banknotes that have incredibly survived and are now proving excellent growth assets. Such rarities presented in splendid condition have achieved outstanding average growth rates over many decades and that level of appreciation shows no sign of abating. Limited supplies and an insatiable demand from a highly competitive world market drives their success.

Australia’s early Specimen banknotes attract the undivided attention of erudite investors who recognise just how rare and historic these professionally printed and often beautifully engraved examples are, plus the investment diversity and price performance they offer. In many cases less than 10 examples of a particular note are known to exist today, driving demand higher than ever. Revealing elaborate, coloured anti-forgery printing, the notes displayed are highly valued acquisitions.

A Treasured Note from Australia’s First Bank Less Than 10 Known!

Printed in Very Low Numbers Less Than 10 Examples Known!

The Bank of New South Wales (1817-1982)

The London Chartered Bank of Aust (1852-1921)

Specimen banknotes, produced as an example of a given issue, were often works of art in themselves, created by some of the worlds most eminent engraving companies. This superb Specimen engraved by Perkins, Bacon & Co., London is a glorious example.

Specimens produced by this and other private trading banks of the time were only printed as an example of a given issue for note printing archives or presentation to VIPs, making any appearance on today’s market all the more remarkable.

This bank was responsible for the issue of Australia’s first standardised currency backed by assets. The 1850’s Victorian gold rush put the bank in danger of exceeding the legal maximum issue of notes allowed.

This bank issued two types of notes with some variations. Almost all of the Type Two notes printed by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., included rainbow coloured antiforgery printing on the back.

It caused a severe drain on its note issue, so it began issuing notes to the amount limited by that of its paid up capital and coin or bullion holdings.

The bank opened a principal office in Melbourne and branches in Sydney and Brisbane. In its first years of operation, Melbourne note issue was far greater than that of Sydney.

Bank of Queensland (Brisbane Office 1863-1866)

Four note types were issued by this bank, each revealing interesting variations that make them an inspiring series to acquire.

Various banknotes printed by Perkins Bacon & Co., and Batho & Co., London for the Bank of Queensland featured the branch of issue on the front, as shown on the extremely rare and beautifully preserved Specimen presented here. This London-based bank established a main office in Brisbane in 1863. The bank initially prospered, increasing note circulation significantly between 1863 and 1865. However, due to its involvement with various other companies which failed and the collapse of a key London bank, it too failed and suspended payment in 1866.

The National Bank of Australia Limited (1858-1982)

The first was engraved by Sands & Kenny, Melbourne, the second by Perkins Bacon & Co., London and the remainder by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., London. The later featured a different portrait of a female for each of the Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth domiciles. The Melbourne-based bank opened one of its first branches in Adelaide. With more than half its shareholders living in SA, the Adelaide branch nearly rivaled Victoria.

Commonwealth Florins Scarce in Their Grades Prove Hot Contenders at Key Numismatic Auctions!

Enduring and Top Performing Commonwealth Coins, including Australia’s Scarcest Key Date Halfpenny!

While demand for George V coins continues to burgeon, an ever diminishing supply of quality material will ensure strong price growth well into the future. Auction results constantly demonstrate that choice quality Australian Pre-Decimal coins, including the revered Florin, have no shortage of admirers. Widely regarded as one of the most popular in Australia’s PreDecimal series, enthusiastic collectors jockey for position to stake their claim on the finest examples available.

Shrewed investors and collectors appreciate that unless they act swiftly when premium quality Pre-Decimal coins surface for sale, it could be some time before these revered rarities reappear on the market. Activity at auction consistently reinforces this as spirited competition often leads to items selling quickly and well beyond estimated prices. As key dates in their respective series, the three examples presented here offer exceptional choices for astute buyers.

Our First Distinctively Australian Coin

Limited Production Heightens Demand

Struck during strategic periods in Australia’s history including Federation, World War I and II and the Great Depression, the historic appeal of the Florin will never wane. Its large size, weight and wonderful design detail also make it prized in most grades.

Issued in significantly smaller numbers during World War I, Australian coins such as the Halfpenny were well used and worn, so to discover any today in higher grades is astounding. Displaying rich red and brown tones, the featured coin affords a prime opportunity for the investor or specialised collector.

Introduced in 1910, the inimitable florin heralded the arrival of our first distinctively Australian Commonwealth coins. They were minted until 1963 with the George V obverse featured from 1911 to 1936.

Australia’s first copper pennies and halfpennies were issued in 1911 to complete the already circulating set of silver denominations. George V appeared on the coins for the first time.

The Royal Mint, London and Birmingham Mint, formerly Heaton’s Mint, struck the first florins between 1910 and 1915. The Birmingham issues carried the “H” (Heaton) mintmark and the Royal Mint issues had no mark.

Quality florins remain one of the most sought after rare coins on the numismatic market today.

Key Date a Leading Investment Choice The performance of the 1923 Melbourne Mint Halfpenny has been nothing short of staggering over the past decades and it remains a high priority investment piece. Its true mintage of less than 20,000 was not lost on early punters quick to capitalise on its investment potential.

1923 George V Halfpenny ~ Key Date

Struck Exclusively by The Melbourne Mint All Florins were struck at the Melbourne Mint from 1916 to 1919 inclusively and featured the “M” (Melbourne) mintmark. The rare example displayed is presented in one of the highest and most sought after grades in numismatics, representing a superb opportunity for the astute investor or collector. It reveals a strong strike with great eye appeal. The George V obverse was designed by well known coin designer Sir Edgar. B MacKennal and the reverse coat of arms was by fellow artist W.H. J Blackemore. After 1919, florins were mostly minted at either the Melbourne or Sydney mints, except during World War II when the San Francisco Mint assisted the Melbourne Mint to produce some of the 1942 to 1944 coins. All further issues from 1945 to 1963 were struck at the Melbourne Mint and did not carry a mintmark.

Prior to 1916 all Australian pennies were minted in England. Collectors will often vie for George V era coins in various grades just to complete a set or collection. World Renowned New Zealand Colonial Banknotes A Strategic Investment Choice in Big Demand!

Fine Quality and Affordable Investments and Collectables from Major New Zealand Banknote Issuers

There are hundreds of thousands of investors and collectors world-wide today competing for quality investment and collectable numismatic items. As some of the rarest issues of their type in the world, New Zealand’s colonial Specimens and Printer’s Proofs are in demand globally and realising strong results at auction. An inherent desire amongst discerning buyers to diversify and expand their self-managed investment funds and private collections will only reinforce this upward trend.

Exceptional examples of early New Zealand banknotes issued by various banks of the time continue to inspire collectors and investors constantly searching for superior material with a powerful market presence that will continue to reap rewards. Whether interested purely for investment, or an avid collector of especially printed notes or those from a specific bank or domicile, the imposing examples presented here will enhance any collection or asset portfolio.

A Rare Find from NZ’s Biggest Bank

A Rare Unissued Remainder

Bank of New Zealand (1861-Present)

While many notes were often printed ready for issue they were not always circulated due to changes in economic circumstances or Government policy. They were destroyed with the exception of a few samples retained as records, some of which eventually found their way onto the market.

Amazingly preserved over many decades, this magnificent Specimen banknote affords an outstanding opportunity to diversify and further develop your investment portfolio. Hailing from the Bank of NZ, the most prolific issuer of NZ notes until 1934, its design is similar to the third type of this denomination issued in 1873 and the sixth issued from 1902 to 1916. By 1865, the BNZ had issued more than twice the number of notes of the second largest bank, and dominated the country’s banking scene when this figure eventually rose to more than three times.

The Bank of NSW opened an office in Auckland, NZ in 1861 and four other branches.

The Colonial Bank of New Zealand (1874-1895) Only surfacing in recent decades, Printer’s Proofs have had a significant impact in the numismatic marketplace as a tried and tested favourite of astute buyers quick to realise their extreme rarity, high growth performance and heritage value. Unique in banking records, these valuable examples were normally uniface, printed on card as a proposed design for a note and then sent to the banks for final approval. The Colonial was NZ’s seventh rarest for banknotes and had three main banknote issues. The proof displayed was produced around the second series issued from 1875 to 1889.

Striking Silver Coins of Great Britain Some of the Rarest in their Grades!

Huge Potential for Future Price Growth Propels Buyers into Action to Secure the Best Coins!

Savoured for their substantial silver content, rarity, imposing designs and investment performance, the market for quality early British silver coinage remains strong with many selling well above estimated values. As they circulated extensively, few high end pieces survived, highlighting the importance of these prodigious examples, many rare in their respective grades.

While there is already a substantial international market for quality Great Britain coinage, the future potential for these coins is exciting. They are heading in the same direction as Australia’s Pre-Decimal note series back in the 1990’s ~ highly underestimated at the time but now extremely valuable and in huge demand. Watch out for these quiet achievers!

Fifth Finest Known ~ Date Partly Unstruck

Extremely Rare in this Grade ~ Fifth Finest Known

Shillings of Charles II’s reign are fascinating and challenging partly due to the dates featured and wide variety of provenance marks indicating the origin of the metal used.

The George I (Reign 1698-1727) Half Crown is considered a handsome coin and although only produced over a short period, featured a number of interesting varieties, including this exceptional example.

Charles II’s reign (1660-1685) marked the end of the ancient technique of hand hammering coins and the arrival of the first ‘milled coinage’ using hand powered presses. The coin became known as the shilling during the reign of Edward VI (1547-1553) and mintage continued regularly after that.

The series was redesigned to accommodate the Hanoverian accession. The reverse included an abbreviated form of the new German-born king’s titles. George I was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1714 to 1727 and ruled Hanover during the Holy Roman Empire from 1698. He inherited the English throne on a technicality.
