ith Anzac Day approaching, it is only fitting that we devote a section of our latest edition to a superb selection of collectable items associated with Australia’s military history. While Anzac day on April 25 marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War 1, it also pays tribute to the courage and fighting spirit of all the men and women who have, or currently serve in the Australian defence forces.
The Rare Coin Company has sourced a variety of military-themed items including striking items from the Perth and Royal Australian Mints. Inspiring items range from a 1916 infantryman bronze figurine to Victoria Cross replicas and 2010 Anzac coins. As always, we have also assembled a superior quality range of rare Australian and world coins and banknotes plus stunning mint and other key items. We trust you enjoy our latest selection.

Magnificent Military Medals Sure to Sell Quickly
Military Releases Capture Essence of Aussie Spirit
Only Awarded for the Greatest Feats of Valour Instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856 and made retrospective to 1854, the coveted Victoria Cross is only awarded for “conspicuous acts of bravery or a daring or pre-eminent act of valour or selfsacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy”. Ninety seven have been awarded to Australians from the Boer to the Vietnam War. The first Australian to earn the award was Captain (later Sir Neville) Howse for rescuing a wounded man on July 24, 1900 while serving as an officer of the NSW Army Medical Corps during the South African War 1899-1902 (Boer War). Of all the orders and decorations open to members of the Australian Defence Force, the Victoria Cross remains the most honoured. When worn, the VC takes precedence over all other awards, and is positioned to the far left of any medal group.
The Designs The design remains identical in every way to the British award, a Maltese Cross in bronze adorned by a crown surmounted by a crowned lion, the emblem of the British Royal family, in the centre, with a scroll bearing the inscription, ‘For Valour’. On the reverse is inscribed the date of the action. The name and regiment of the holder

are inscribed on the back of the suspension bar. The ribbon is crimson for all Services, although until July 1918, the Royal Navy used the blue ribbon. Authentic crosses were originally hand crafted by London jewelers using metal taken from the guns of cannons from the Crimean War.

Awarded to approx 4,600 Australians
The Australian War Memorial (AWM) has commemorated the 95th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing with an inaugural national tour of all nine Victoria Cross (VC) medals won in the campaign. The tour, which started in Sydney in March, coincided with a major redevelopment of the AWM’s centerpiece Hall of Valour in which the entire collection of VCs is displayed. The free exhibition features the medals of Corporals Alexander Burton and William Dunstan, Private John Hamilton, Lance Corporals Albert Jacka and Leonard Keysor, Captain Alfred Shout, Lieutenant William Symons, Second Lieutenant Hugo Throssell and Lieutenant Frederick Tubb. Seven of the medals were awarded for bravery during the battle of Lone Pine on August 6 and 7, 1915. The AWM holds 60 of the 97 Victoria Cross medals awarded to Australians.

2010 Anzac Day $1 Uncirculated Coin Second Release in Annual Anzac Coin Program
2009 Anzac Day $1 Uncirculated Coin First Release in Annual Anzac Coin Program
The second release from The Perth Mint’s annual Anzac Day $1 coin program pays tribute to all those who have served or are currently serving with the Royal Australian Navy. The coin’s reverse portrays HMAS Parramatta, built for the Royal Australian Navy before World War I, the image of a Leading Seaman from the same era and silhouetted bugler in the background.
In 2009 The Perth Mint introduced the annual Anzac coin program with this touching first release. The reverse portrays a former Australian serviceman with a young child sitting on his lap, symbolising the importance of remembering our diggers’ sacrifices and the preservation of their memories by each succeeding generation.
A very special collectable honouring members of our Royal Australian Navy.
A beautifully designed coin proud Australians of all ages will find hard to resist.

DIGGER BEAR Standing at approximately 36cm tall, the Digger Bear was designed as a tribute to those who died and those who survived World War I. The Digger Bear project was thoroughly researched to ensure accuracy in all aspects of the uniform, and special moulds were commissioned, to ensure that the iconic slouch hat, and the Rising Sun emblems were also accurately reproduced. A superb gift idea!

Striking Mint Releases Define our Military Heritage
Superbly Crafted Australian Defence Force Collectables
2010 Australia Remembers Lost Soldiers of Fromelles 20c Uncirculated Coin Second Australia Remembers Release The Royal Australian Mint continues its Australia Remembers series by commemorating the Lost Soldiers of Fromelles. The battle occurred in France on July 19-20 in 1916. Fromelles was a combined operation between British troops and the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). The Australian War Memorial describes the battle as “the worst 24 hours in Australia’s entire history.” Known as Australia’s bloodiest day, during the 1916 battle the 5th Division suffered 5533 casualties. There was speculation for many years regarding the existence of an unmarked and forgotten mass grave near Fromelles, containing the remains of Allied soldiers killed during the battle and subsequently buried by the Germans. The coin design is based on the Cobbers Statue which stands in Fromelles and was developed in partnership with the Australian Fromelles Project Group. A poignant reminder of the courage and determination of our revered Anzacs. A moving collectable to be treasured. Housed in an Illustrated Presentation Card
