Struggling to survive in its early years as The Commercial Banking Company, branches were forced to close during the depression years of the 1840’s and two attempts to re-establish itself in Victoria had failed.
Distinctly different from the Type One, Three and Four paper Decimal Specimen notes which were issued in respective presentation booklets, the Type Two Specimens were issued as individual examples of each denomination only, which no doubt explains the reason they have become known as the scarcest issues in the paper Decimal Specimen series. Type Two Specimen notes only appear as individual pieces when available,

The Bank of Adelaide commenced trading in 1865 and was very successful, initially confining all its business to South Australia. A branch was opened in London in 1890 and some time later the bank became represented in each state. Despite the 1890’s banking crisis when many banks collapsed, the Bank of Adelaide was one of the few that remained solid. The bank formed the Finance Corporation of Australia Limited in 1955 but heavy investment and land speculation, followed by a sudden drop in values, saw it absorbed by the ANZ in 1980 and registered as a limited liability company. in Australia were almost identical to British sovereigns except for the mintmarks ‘S’ (Sydney), ‘M’ (Melbourne) and ‘P’ (Perth). The first shillings, threepences, sixpences and florins arrived in 1910 followed by bronze pennies and half pennies in 1911.
1939 George VI Slabbed Set of Seven Choice Quality Coins Forming part of the Gold Bearing Series of 1913 to 1933 and redeemable in gold, the one pound note was issued from 1923 with minor variations until replaced by ‘legal tender’ notes. There are two distinct note variations appearing with or without the “TS Harrison Australian Note Printer” wording, possibly caused by the use of old printing plates.
As well as signature and serial changes, 1932 George V Riddle / Sheehan this is a complex issue with nine varieties One Pound Note produced over ten years. Signatures appeared in thick or thin black script. Issued from 1924 to 1933, the redesigned five pound note including an image of the Hawkesbury River, in New South Wales was smaller than its predecessor and incorporated several variations, including four signature combinations with Kell / Collins being the first. No notes contain the signature of Sir Denison Miller, as he died in office before they were released.

Kell replaced him and the title changed to “Governor, Commonwealth Bank of Australia”. Oddly, on some later issues the former title “Chairman of Directors, Note Issue Department” appeared due to an old batch of notes being used up to save on costs. Difficult to come by in grades better than this pleasing example.

New Zealand Specimen Banknotes ~ Some of the Most Limited Note Issues in the World

Since the appearance of rare New Zealand Specimen notes onto the market approximately a decade ago, we have seen this fascinating banknote area almost triple in growth over the years. Reign of the Monarchs
Uniform Issue (1924-1934)
The Bank of New Zealand (1861-1992)
Prior to 1934 private trading banks were not obliged to accept each other’s notes so they agreed on a uniform design with all the denominations the same size and featuring identical images. Only placement of “Bank of New Zealand” differed on particular denominations.
Established in Auckland, this bank became the largest in the country with branches opened locally and in London. By 1865 it had issued more than twice the number of notes of the second largest bank, which rose to more than three times in later years. Further branches
King George V was the first monarch to appear on Australian Commonwealth banknotes when the 1923 to 1933 Gold Bearing Series was released. Notes were issued from 10/- shillings to £10 pounds, although the higher values of £20, £50, £100 and £1000 continued from the previous non-portrait series. The series was quite involved with nine varieties produced over 10 years.
The Riddle / Heathershaw was issued from 1927 to 1932. A new series of banknotes issued from 1938 was almost identical to the previous design except for a few changes including the portrait of the new monarch George VI replacing that of his father. Signatures appeared in orange on 10/- notes produced from 1939 to 1943.

Low Mintage Scarce Investment Quality Pre Decimal Proofs Offering Affordable Opportunities! Especially hand selected to inspire a diversity of investors and collectors, these supreme ‘FDC’ quality Australian Commonwealth Elizabeth II Proof Sets present excellent potential for sizeable returns, highlighting their undeniable appeal for inclusion into private investments, super funds and precious collections. Proof sets are particularly scarce as they were produced in notoriously limited numbers. As an example, the beautifully preserved 1959M (Melbourne Mint) set exhibited here touts an incredibly low mintage of just 1,506 sets. Collectors lucky enough to originally acquire these sets at just above their face value made one of the wisest investment choices in Australian numismatics today. Their consistent market performance and affordability continues to entice new and established investors alike. The First Pre Decimal Proofs The Melbourne Mint sold the first Proofs to the public from 1938 to 1939 but they were not reintroduced until 1955 when both the Melbourne and Perth Mints went into production. The last florins, shillings and sixpences were struck in 1963 and threepences, halfpennies and pennies in 1964.
Being individually wrapped in cellophane, tempted some inexperienced collectors to unwrap and handle the coins, which has made FDC grade all the rarer and exciting to acquire. (FDC) or “Flower of the Die” coins are usually perfectly preserved and incredibly scarce!
Penny Proof coins not intended for circulation were especially struck in limited numbers by both mints due to demand from the collecting public.
Australian Proof coins are amongst the most exclusive items available to collectors. The Australian Government restricted the production of Pre Decimal Proofs and only those coins struck for circulation were to be issued as Proofs, making them a highly sought after collectable today. Proof coins are masterpieces of the numismatic world, reflecting the artistry and skills of the craftsman. Well struck from special dies with a mirror-like or matte (frosted) finish, they are far superior to even the best circulation strikes, however their tiny mintages hold the key to their market performance. The Queen Elizabeth II Era
Commonwealth Pre Decimal Proofs struck at the Melbourne and Perth Mints were Australia’s first attempt to strike coins for commercial purposes. Each mint was responsible for the sale of its own Proofs. Perth only sold bronze and Melbourne sold all silver and some bronze issues. Each penny in The Perth Mint set featured has been professionally graded and individually slabbed in a specially designed perspex case for lifelong protection displaying the coins to their best advantage.
The portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth first appeared on Australia’s coinage in 1953. The legends ‘BR: OMN’ (Of All the Britains) and ‘F: D’ (Defender of the Faith) usually featured on the coins were omitted, which in the case of the ‘F: D’, caused a public outcry. Mint officials were quick to respond and by 1956 all but the halfpenny denomination, which was corrected in 1959, had been reinstated.

Rare Bank of Scotland 2007 Bridge Series Banknotes of the modern world presented in Uncirculated grade are hugely popular with keen collectors due to their fine state of preservation and often colourful and interesting designs. The Bank of Scotland, formed in 1695 and the first Scottish bank to issue banknotes, launched the eye-catching Bridges banknote series in September 2007. The various bridges represent Scotland’s pioneering enterprise and heritage. While the colour and size of the new notes are consistent with previous designs, the text is contemporary style and the large raised denomination numerals act as an aid for the partially sighted.
