Here we record some years of Dimitra Gelagoti I arrived in New York City almost a year ago with my favorite belongings, my thoughts and my precious dreams. Dreams that have already been shaped and others completely unknown. This PORTFOLIO is with what I depart every time after every new destination. And therefore more than a book this is a new luggage. C U C K O O HOUSE
a system of cohabitation / thesis by project, 2009 is a building vessel designed especially for 60 persons. Through this research project, we made use of the existed relations between our research’s applicants or in other words our research’s volunteers in order to define an environment of cohabitation in which habitants will share space and facilities. A model of cohabitation like Cuckoo house which emanates from one existed group of people ,needs an abundance of data in order to understand the metrical space that develops between them. Q uestionnaire The substantial instrument of our research was an internet based questionnaire , through which we were able to collect desires, demands and descriptions of an imaginary everyday life. The questionnaire was not only a way to assemble in a more manageable/workable way data for our future habitants but also it was a form of restrict design, a kind of authoritarian building program, which we couldn’t waive due to the preciseness of data information. Through this confrontation with the flux of data we inserted one method of collection, treatment and formulation of data from a real crowd of people to a final architectural model which aside from being just another part ,and nothing more, of a continuous process of space production, it concludes to be an interesting assemblage of forms, provisions and dimensions.

A diagrammatic catalogue of pre-existed houses. Every future inhabitant of our cohabitation model had to sketch and describe with detail his previous -usually family house. This illustrated board resulted to a comparison study of our model and the former condition in terms of person per m2 , scale, materials, and type

Every unit/ house is an assemblage of furniture and equipment. The diagram shows how the questioned inhabitants evaluate the equipment according to how important it is to them. At the end a catalogue of f+e is created that shows how many of the questioned furniture/equipment are (the future tenants) willing to share or not with their cohabitants. The Cuckoo house is an ergonomic system of housing which based on personal calendars, possessings and habits creates platforms of successful cohabitation.

T h e m a n i f e s t o of our research is to define a kind of architecture which functions as a canal of recordings and registrations of desire into materialistic space. The materialistic desire, in the century that we are going to live and act as architects, is collected and measured as another physical element from delicate and hypersensitive instrumnets which are constantly awaken in order to poll the material and the mental needs. Those needs translated into acquisitions equip our homes and our cities through processes that defy architect’s will and vision. In order to attempt one real enlargement of the range of design ,we need a kind of “statistical expressionism” which will be able through the polyphony of the examined crowd to overcome the unilateral subjectiveness of a single architect and to reappear one technical spontaneity aspired by the artificial dynamics of contemporary metropolis. To make desire rational and strain it through cables of statistical instruments, may cause a linear confrontation of perplexed phenomena but on the other hand it may foresee an era, not so far by now, of total recording where our mind will float among unseen complexities, comparisons and formulations that a bare eye cannot define.
It is hard to define all the changes that have influenced the archetype character of the house. The house -oikos- has stopped to be the ancestor box into which family multiplies its members through a concatenation of deaths and births recordings. The aforementioned change has evolved since the house lost its oriented territory during its first dematerialization that was synchronized with the family’s first immigration to the city center. Away from the ancestor land House drains all the energy, materials and objects from the city as it infiltrates with the existing infrastructure that make it work. Home becomes a handy element, not a destination. In our days and age the vision of a house that functions with the clarity of a habitation machine is for long inverted. House stands somewhere in the middle of all those appliances that automatize and fuse the use inside its walls.

FORD’S HOUSE and TAYLOR’S HOUSE, competition 2009 It would be very difficult to enumerate all the changes that affected the archetype of the home, The house ceased to be a sheer primeval box -where family perpetuates through multiples birth and deaths-, as soon as the house became deterritorialized nand dematerialized with families moving to the city, looking for opportunities in quest for their survival and away from their primordial land. The building sucks energy and materials form a city infested by networks. In such ways the house becomes a contraption in lieu of a destination. In such times, the vision of the house functioning with the purity and rationalism of a machine is reversed: The machine is the house. The house locates somewhere between the assembly of the appliances that automatize and short circuit the functions on the insides of the house. The anthropomorphism of the machine has been replaced with a mechano-morphism of the human. The image of the sensible city has been turned over by a subliminal operating system still unaware of its true range and potential, its complexity broken down to personal, partial everyday lives. The solid mechanic city is reduced to the processes that set it in motion.

In these two reciprocal architectural projects, we tried to apply automation for a series of domestic everyday functions. In the Ford’s house, referring to the inventor of the assembly line, we enclose a conveyor belt on a walled perimeter of a house. In it, the storeroom-once regarded as secondary or residual space- is designed as a mechanical loop, revolving around the house’s open space setting the domestic material archive in motion. In the second case, the Taylor’s house, -submitted for a greek competition for student housing,( page 020-021) comprises a series of bedrooms on ground level, topped by two other floors, used for the living room and kitchen spaces.

A series of elevator mechanical systems is used as a common thread of the three slabs, extending each student’s space vertically. These elevators -one for every inhabitant- linking the bedroom with the living room, kitchen area and bathrooms, are used to move objects up and down the building, dividing a continuum of wall-free corridors to more private areas of elevating possessions. The project owes its name to Frederick W. Taylor, since his ideas in management and efficiency gave rise the verticality of the skyscraper, a place of elevating energy, people, products and hierarchies. Both projects introduce the machine, derived from the history of industry, as a domestic element.

The studio Google inc. was confronting with the challenging problem of designing for Google a model for the diverse program of an office together with a data farm. is the invisible cloud of our data. Our own personal storage of information is saved somewhere in a server inside an unknown data-farm. The project focused on the specific uncertainty and phobia around the question “ are our data secure?” My google proposal/ model named “happy suburbia” was a dispersed model of google village, where every office/data farm unit is a house located according to the pre-existed fiber network. The model of the house is more than a suburban camouflage to serve google’s needs for undercover anonymity. It is a model produced from the idea of Google office being actually an IKEA model house fully equipped with pieces of familiar domesticity.

Developing urban scale for the new google masterplan. The area chosen was New Jersey. Every municipality of New Jersey was analyzed according to 3 factors: fiber network, density of habitable area, income per capita. All of them together formed the new location of my disperced google village. In the new house -type design I reapplied the memory of the cold-war bunker following the equitation: protect your family = protect your data. The final product was a creation of 3 doll houses for Google : Malkovich House, Elevator House and Wall House. Each one of them re-evaluates the relationship between the household and the working environment.

MALKOVICH HOUSE The prototype A , Malkovich House distorts the typical suburban house by its vertical axis. The house is violently extruded, it becomes taller only to fit another short floor in between the already preexisted 1st and 2nd floor. This short floor is were Google domesticity will intrude. The floor is designed for a person seated. He/She moves around the free plan of the floor with a chair upon specific trails. The house and the “malkovich floor� is designed to force the employee to work.

ELEVATOR HOUSE The prototype B, as its conceptual name defines sets in motion an elevator as the heart of the house. This is not the elevator of Maison Bordeaux injured father. It is the part of the house that belongs to the google’s employee. Aside from the elevator a bunker typology is attached at the basement of this house where tha data servers and the office are. The house seems untouched from the outside, a perfect camouflage for the suburban area. The rest of the house complete its fnction and its plan according to the daily program of its working center.

1 WALL HOUSE The prototype C, sets the google house inside the walls of a preexisted house. A host is attached to a suburban default house; it covers it outter cell, it thickens its walls so to create a secondary habitable space around the old one. What is this sound Dad? R. Manou CENTER OF DANCE The program was presupposed the simultaneous coexistence of a dance school for about eighty students, a space for performances, an semi-public large amphitheater and an administration department. Rallou Manou is a vital part of the artistic activity and expression of Hellenic culture and since so the site proposed is in Exarhia Athens in order to form a part of a dense urban tissue. The designing proposal started by dividing the program into the three main distinctive departments connecting all of them with a public plaza that was energized constantly by public or semi-public urban stroll in multiple levels.

dictionary of recieved ideas, gsapp spring 2011 The studio “Dictionary of recieced ideas” focuses on the design of 3 libraries all of them sited in New York. Each one of these libraries should have followed a very specific vocabulary of architectural cliche all of them formed during the last decade. While the studio delves into the question of what eventually is a unique idea by looking throughall of the ‘ancestors’ of our education, it also finds out ways to address the problem of a specific design which in our case was the library. The concept comes after the rules of the game meaning the cliche ideas.

Our idea of a New York library was mainly doubting the need for another library and instead was exploring the idea of a reading room as it was first became a part of a state program around 1935, named Bryant Park reading room. In a similar atmosphere , we wanted to explore the idea of a place that is mainly public, but carries certain privacy duw to teh fact that it is domestically equiped with personal storages. Here I have chosen to present Library case 01 that was working with the following cliches : stacked house, structure apperture and thick wall.

Typology board: Taking under consideration the5slope, teh size and the position of every house/module according to the general library we designed the inside space as different typologies of reading rooms. Some of them are more private having personal desks (libary red areas)and some others have been designed to serve the needs of large amphitheaters for more public reading or other uses such us lectures.

Library case 01 is a building constructed with the rules formed by 3 cliches given in this case the cliche of Stacked house, Thick Wall and Structure Aperture. The projectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main idea was to construct a fluid space of reading. Therefore this reading room is designed by taking under consideration the monopolizing character of stacked house cliche and by optimizing the slopes of the pitched roofs, it creates a continuous amphitheater of reading typologies. The dark parts of the library, the stacks are hidden inside the thick walls which are corridor like rooms with personal storages.

Answering the question for a new identity as the former was oriented by Europan competition for the Oslo site, Gromno we formed a proposal that defied the solution of the main identity by producing 11 new landscapes, 11 new identities every single one of them different in program and different in architectural language.

MANIFESTO The park will become a multiplicity of parks. A former landfill characterized to its depth by the layering of waste will let be characterized by the layering of new program that will divide its terrain into zones. The program is principally divided instead of spread organically throughout the site. This new hyper-layer aside from the fact that allows the massiveness of the site to be understood as neighboring sectors was also an important tooling directly attached and controlled by the geological specificities of it.
THE GROUND Every zone is an amalgamation of grounds with consistency. The design is driven by the desire to take under consideration this idea of a ground that will keep changing and healing years after our own proposal

The site is conceived as various programs that reinforce each other as a closed loop-system from waste to reuse and consumption. The program is a fusion of recreational, educational and ecological activities in juxtaposition to each other allowing the interactions between many different age groups with various interest.

Healing the Nature: Recreational time line
THE PROGRAM The new Gromno is proposing an idea of different living-lifestyle, a ground of social cohabitation attached to a program of re-creating the local natural ecosystem. CLIMATIC CHANGES The proposal suggests a design that can adapt to the abrupt changes of the weather so the site to be vitalized throughout the year. As an example the cabins have been designed in a way that can form a more complex assemblage of sometimes two or more houses so to provide sustainability during the cold periods of the Norwegian climate.

REWARDING RECYCLING As the wastes to be recycled produce energy, the visitors that participate in the process are rewarded through the educational procedure. The visitors can rent a small part of land to cultivate, the products of which are to be consumed or sold at the local market.

The project “dispersed culture “ is dealing with the quest to redefine the urban space through designing a small public element, in this case a chair. MANIFESTO The public chair will become a part of a dispersed exhibition in other words a medium to expand the Seoul’s museum life in the streets. The chairs are becoming a part of the street’s elevation sometimes by matching and others by conflicting style attributes.The chair/ bench changes the stereotypical character of a simple piece that can be multiplied innumerable times everywhere in the city. Our chairs are pieces that complete a project/idea by the multiplicity of types and choices that they offer. Construction attributes. The chair is fabricated by a single steel piece that later on when folded it will create the chair.
