SURPASSING THE BOUNDARIES. ORESTIADA: INTERVENTION IN THE CITY BOUNDARY
2.1
Location | Orestiada Tutors| Evangelia Athanasiou Stavros Vergopoulos In collaboration with | Athina Georgopoulou Nafsika Efklidou
summary. The diploma project negotiates the boundary and through successive observations of various scales, tries to show that the question of surpassing the boundary is not only spatial; and consequently, a proposal that focuses exclusively in its geometry is one-sided. The boundary appears depended on a series of other parameters – such as social, political, ideological, historical, ecological and cultural, which can promise a viable and effective surpassing only with their participation in the design process. On this basis, we are searching for answers on the way that architecture can offer a common denominator, of such a complex reality such as the borderline identity.

SCHOOL OF THEATRE AND THEATRE
Location | Thessaloniki, Centre Tutors | A. Alexopoulou P. Martinidis In collaboration with | E. Toliopoulou D. Filippidou
summary. The site lies between two main city roads. Tsimiski street (also a commercial axis) and Ethnikis Aminis St. which leads to the White Tower (landmark) and the urban coastal line. On the contrary, the back side is less noisy having a primary school, sports and cultural facilities with amplitude of space and a pedestrian road. The spatial environment along with the main idea of an atrium, lead to the basic concept for the building. The built space covers the perimeter of the site while an open atrium is positioned at the center – acting as a core for the external life of the theater school. At the same time the atrium and its intermediate spaces provide the necessary green areas, natural light and ventilation for the building, taking into account the south orientation. The building volume follows the heights and robusticity of the two main streets’ surroundings while it subsides gradually on the back. Thus, creating an opening and connection between the School, the Theater and the Pedestrian area. The School volume in the shape of Π is connected with the Theater’s rectangular volume – with an angle leaning on the north-south axis – closing the shape. In that way the theater is at the same time independed and connected to the school while it encloses the atrium.

summary. The site is very close to an archeological area (walls) and in an altitude that provides free view to the port and the city of Thessaloniki (west side). Due to height restrictions (max. 9 m.) the building heights are quite low and the area is characterized residential. There is also a school on one side and a pedestrian road on the other. Synthesis is based on the section of a cube (9x9x9 meters) into a series of rectangular volumes. Even an empty space is represented as one. Every volume encloses a different function, having in that way a workspace, public and semi-public house spaces, private house spaces, staircase, balconies and yards.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
Scenery, costumes and mask for the play: «Midsummer Night’s Dream» by William Shakespeare. Tutors | L. Karakosta, C. Mantaka, O. Sideridou
summary. There are three aspects that complete this proposal: sceneries, costumes and a mask. The mask represents a donkey head. It is important to be solid, stable and easy to wear. The task was to design and build the framework so that it can be covered with the appropriate cloth. For the scenic design there were two basic sceneries: the palace and the forest. The design approach was meant to be abstract. The case was to elevate the mystery and create an atmosphere (with the creative use of lighting also) and not to follow a strictly realistic attitude. The concept idea has to do with the notion that these two areas are not just landscape-spaces, they also enclose ideas and feelings. The Forest - internal, protection, power of nature, while the Palace - external, danger, power of man. The costumes on the other hand were given the freedom of aesthetism and intensity. The style was intended to combine the medieval costumes through a contemporary filter. The colours of the couples’ costumes are intentionally complementary. Intense colours were chosen so that come in contrast with the gray background of the palace, while the ones that appear on the forest are characterized as earthly, approaching a harmonic co-existence with the scenery.

SCULPTURE
2.6
Sculptures made of cardboard, polystyrene and wire Tutor | K. Dompoulas
Summary On the cardboard relief the purpose was to give the relationship between shadow and depth. For the synthesis of shapes I created an orthogonal grid which applied so to the horizontal as to the vertical plane. The second material was polystyrene. The creation process was through material removal. The design concept had to do with the formation of life in nature; creation of geometric shapes from a mass – a sculpture that rises from the ground (like land forming). For the third construction I used wire. The point was to create a human figure out of a network of lines. The material is differentiated to its diameter acquiring two values – skeleton and skin – and connecting them.
