Bath Hotel: Urban Pause
Embracing the challenge of engaging with the adaptive re-use of an existing building in Shanghai, this hotel design aspires to accommodate the needs of the city dweller and not the tourist. The Bath Hotel provides the space for a short-term pause. Its objective is to facilitate life in metropolitan centers, where access to the privacy of one’s house during the day is often hindered by long commutes. The domestic functions of the private house - sleeping, showering, relaxing, preparing food and dining - are reorganized around the most intimate activity
bathing. The different programmatic entities are arranged vertically in a way that reflects the amount of time each one of them requires.

The two projects presented embark on a playful discourse with classical roman architecture. While respecting its fundamental tectonics, in both cases there is an effort to employ more than one expressive as well as tectonic systems. Fundamental for the projects was the exploration of the dialogue such forma systems can produce when combined, contrasted or overlaid. The orderly classical architectural solutions are, on the one hand, challenged by the tension created through the juxtaposition of different systems and, on the other hand, cherished, in terms of their technological and spatial qualities. Whether resorting to the
public market, both designs’ objective is to function as urban buildings responding to their context.

The Great Wall of Rockaway
Located in Rockaway, NY, the project proposes the re-use of an existing infrastructure to adress issues of coastal resilience and social segregation within the peninsula. The proposal consists of a community center, located long the elevated train line, which functions as an evacuation facility in emergency situations. The re-design of the space under and around the existing train line is accompanied by an urban farm/park. In attempt to break the division imposed on the peninsula by the train line, the design of the park engages with both comunities and provides a common ground of educa-

Located at the Itabu train station in Japan, this design engages with the outdoor toilet installed by Sou Fujimoto at the site. The proposal attempts to bring to the fore the sense of exposure one experiences while using Sou Fujimoto’s glass toilet. While re-incorporating the program of the train station, On the Lookout creates a threshold of deceit and illusion between the toilet and the new station. A series of windows and opening that are either too narrow or too high for someone to look through, create the impression of sur-

On the Threshold negotiates the division of city blocks produced by Kyoto’s canal. By splitting the canal in a number creeks with minimal water flow, the project reverses the existing segregation. The proposal revolves around the creation of a part on the water level, accompanied by uses which relate to the site’s context. A student house, a community center and a student workshop, attempt to bring the university students and residents of the on-site housing complexes together. The urban park is developed on multiple levels, challenging the idea of
the ambiguity regarding the ground floor, present in the traditional Kyoto buildings facing the canals.

The drawings presented embark on the analysis of the architectural language of Roman architecture. The intense study of Italian architecture occurs through hand-drawing. The subject of these studies are the proportional and symbolic systems that are overlaid on each other. Bramante’s Cortile is subjected to close reading, from its great corner details to the proportions of its elements and the content of its inscriptions. The question asked is: How many distinct systems of architectural expression co-exist in a single building? By attempting
bly, called to answer what the role of each system is; from functional, to structural, to symbolic.

Loosfacade
The design of the Loosfacade presents an interpretation of the work of Adolf Loos and, more specifically, his designs for single family houses. The project responds to the prompt of the 1980 Venice Biennale for the design of a facade which would be exhibited along the Strada Novissima, under the assumption that Adolf Loos would contribute with a design of his own. Drawing from Loos’s Tzara house, Villas Muller and Steiner, as well as the Rufer House, the facade attempts to reflect his fascination with the purity and mute quality of the white wall, his celebration of the flat roof, as well as his interest in the incorporation of classical references. The de-

The proposal engages with the archetype of the ancient Greek theater by incorporating a central outdoor public piazza reminiscent of the theatrical formation. The building’s programmatic entities are evident in the overall composition, as different volumes accommodate distinct functions. The components of the program that are part of the public character of the building are distinguished from the ones associated with its educational nature. The latter is elevated, while the theater space and the lobby are below the ground and in proximity to the open piazza. The division of the program allows for the design of public space on the ground floor, which is

Ephemeral City
The design for an Ephemeral City is located within the Nicosia buffer zone. The proposal responds to the fictional scenario of the city’s reunification and consists of a three-dimensional structure hosting a temporary environment of habitation, commerce and work. The aim is to provide a neutral common ground for both sides, in which the transition from segregation to co-existence can begin to happen. Remaining above the ground, the proposal does not tamper with the memory of the conflict whose effect is imprinted on the buffer zone. Respecting this significant part of the two nations history, Ephemeral City provides the environment needed to move past

the political tension, without erasing its memory.

The Seed Archive’s program is dedicated to the preservation of indigenous seed varieties, as well as the education of the public and its engagement. The design negotiates the sealed nature of a laboratory enclosure with the openness of a public space, which becomes an extension of the city’s riverside routes. The architecture actively engages with the ground, rather than being placed on it. It attempts to excavate the site and redefine the ground condition, by incorporating routes, cultivations and building spaces on all levels. In doing so, it engages with both the site’s context, characterized by a similar sectional relation with the
