general information Registration

Health

• Register online at www.gacamp.org. A non-refundable $100 deposit is required for each camper. You will be invoiced for the balance; payments are accepted online with Visa or Master Card (we do not accept American Express or Discover) or by check. All camp fees must be paid in full by May 30, 2011 or you may lose your reservation and the space may be ﬁlled from the waiting list. If you register aer May 30, the full amount is due at the time of registration.

Germantown Academy employs a full-time nurse and athletic trainer to meet the health needs of our campers. In order for us to eﬀectively care for campers in the event of illness or injury, parents are required to complete health information forms for each camper as part of the registration process. No child will be permitted to attend camp without completed health forms.

• For a $25 registration fee, a paper application may be submitted. Call our Summer Programs oﬃce or see the “Forms” section of our website for details. ere is no charge for applying online.

A nutritious lunch is available for a fee of $25/week. Please see our website for additional information and menu options. Campers attending a morning program until 12:00pm and an aernoon program beginning at 1:00pm will attend a supervised lunch period in our air conditioned dining room from 12:0012:45pm. All other campers, including aernoon Day Camp participants, eat lunch with their respective groups.

Start-up Packet A start-up packet will be posted on our website in late May with detailed information relevant to the specific camps your child will be attending. is information will include what to bring, what to wear, what to expect, and drop-off and pick-up procedures. Car tags will be sent to all registered families by May 30 and must be displayed by any driver picking up a camper. If you need additional car tags, please contact the Summer Programs office.

Early Bird Discount A 10% discount will be applied to camp fees and extended day fees for each camper who is enrolled in at least three weeks of camp and has paid all camp fees in full by March 5, 2011. is discount does not apply to lunch or programs added to the camper’s account aer March 5.

Lunch

Swimming Germantown Academy has a 25-yard indoor pool, staﬀed by experienced, certiﬁed lifeguards. Recreational swimming is included in our sports camps and aernoon day camp schedule. Daily group swimming lessons are provided to participants who are enrolled in Preschool Day Camp and Traditional Day Camp. Towels for swimming are provided.

Supervision Children will always be with an escort when traveling between activities and lunch. Counselors keep full schedules of campers and get them to sports, academics, theater, day camp, art, lunch, swimming or wherever their Summer Programs day takes them!

Refund Protection • If you cancel for any reason before May 30, 2011 you will receive a refund of all fees paid, minus the $100 deposit. We do not issue refunds aer May 30 unless you purchase our Refund Protection plan. • With the purchase of the Refund Protection plan, Germantown Academy will reimburse parents 75% of the unused portion of camp fees (excluding the non-refundable $100 deposit) for a valid medical withdrawal that is accompanied by written documentation from a doctor. Cost of the Refund Protection plan is $20 per camper.

Service Charges A service charge of $25 will be assessed for any changes made to a camper’s schedule aer May 30, 2011.ere will be a charge of $35 assessed for any check returned by the bank.

Extended Hours Program We provide supervision for children who need to arrive early and/or stay on campus beyond the regular program hours. Several enrollment options are available. e hours and general parameters of the AM and PM sessions are described below.

For more than 250 years, Germantown Academy has been using innovative teaching techniques to assure academic excellence. Our summer academic programs offer something for everyone, including enrichment, maintenance, and remediation courses. Our success is largely due to the patient, persistent, flexible, and caring teachers who find creative and stimulating ways to promote learning. Student teacher ratios never exceed 12 to 1 and are typically less than 6 to 1 in the K-5 Lower School classes. Students seeking academic credit for summer study need to consult with their respective schools for permission to pursue the course for credit. Enrollment is limited in all courses. Occasionally, classes may be canceled due to insufficient enrollment; all deposits and fees are returned if that happens.

Entering Grades K-5 Handwriting Without Tears™ Full of fun activities, songs and phonics, Handwriting Without Tears™ (HWT) is an easy and fun way to learn to print and to improve existing printing skills. is unique program, developed by an occupational therapist and a handwriting specialist, provides a developmentally based learning sequence where children learn writing skills using multi-sensory teaching aids and methods. is course, taught by our trained HWT teacher, will reinforce proper pencil grip, directionality, and writing ﬂuency. (New Course!) Beginning Chinese Language and Culture Have fun and learn some of the basics of the Chinese language and culture in this two-week, highly interactive program taught by a native speaker. Students will learn basic vocabulary, songs, games, and arts and cras to better understand our one billion friends in China. Fun with Spanish Get a jump start on learning another language! is fun class for students entering grades K-1 is a great way to start learning Spanish or reinforce beginning Spanish language skills. Get Ready for Numbers and Letters A relaxed and fun readiness program for beginning and non-readers, this course is designed for students who would beneﬁt from development of letter and number recognition. Summer in Alphabetia Children entering grades 1 - 2 are invited to join our puppet friends in the Land of Alphabetia, where letters and words come to life! e Alphabetia program is a unique part of the very successful Lower School curriculum at Germantown Academy, and our qualified teachers are excited to facilitate activities developed especially for our summer program. Beginning reading skills will be reinforced through fun games and hands-on activities. Children will learn and practice phonetic strategies, as emphasized in the Signs for Sounds program. Participants will also gain confidence and build motivation for reading as they enjoy a wide variety of reading at their specific Independent Reading Level. Hooked on Books is is a fun course designed for students who would beneﬁt from shortterm skill maintenance in reading and language arts. Students read and write daily and participate in book talks, discussion groups, games, and computer activities related to language arts. Math Attack Do you ever have trouble remembering how to do math when school starts again in September? If so, Math Attack “3-4” or Math Attack “5-6” will keep your brain working! is is the perfect course for students who are allergic to drill and practice sheets. Math Attack focuses on review and reinforcement of basic intermediate math skills through engaging games, computer challenges, and SmartBoard lessons. Each participant will receive a packet of games and activities that can easily be used at home throughout the summer and school year. A Touch of Culture– An Introduction to the Far East (New Course!) Aikido e Art of Japanese Self-Defense Learn Aikido, a Japanese self-defense art that combines powerful movements with ancient samurai philosophy of chivalry. e word “Aikido” literally means “the way of harmonizing with energy.” It teaches students to be able to defend themselves while also protecting their opponent. e ultimate aim is not only to be able to resolve external conflict, but to find a deep calm and confident center within our selves. Campers will be escorted from Germantown Academy to our neighbors across the street at the River of Life Martial Arts and Wellness Center at 321 Morris Road, Fort Washington. Math Plus+ Read/Write/Compute Read/Write/Compute is intended to maintain and encourage quality reading and writing for students who are entering grades 3-5. e format includes sustained reading, writing, computer activities, online resources, and motivating projects. Reading and Writing Workshop is course helps students improve their reading, writing, and study skills. Students will work on strengthening these areas through a variety of activities in and out of class. Reading selections will include ﬁction and nonﬁction. Working individually and in groups, students will develop their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and expository writing abilities. Using content area material, students will practice how to read a textbook, take notes, prepare an outline, and study for a test. Daily instruction in grammatical concepts will also be provided. For students entering grades 8-11, this course emphasizes the structure of algebra and basic algebraic procedures. Topics include the properties of and how to solve linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, solving systems of equations, graphing polynomial and rational equations as well as systems of equations, the properties of rational expressions, arithmetic operations with rational expressions, logarithms, exponents, basic trigonometry, and word problems applying all these topics. Geometry For students entering grades 8-11, this course includes a thorough study of the main topics of plane geometry and how these topics coordinate with one another. e role of definitions and undefined terms is clarified. Students will learn the principles of deductive reasoning and mathematical proof, and to present arguments in a clear, orderly fashion. e application of theorems in the solution of numerical problems is a major part of this course. Campers attending other summer programs in the morning may sign up for Afternoon Explorer Camp. Campers in the Aernoon Explorer Program meet at 12:00, eat lunch together, and join the full day Explorer Camp in the festivities planned for the day. In some cases when there is a trip that is a great distance away, an alternate trip will be planned for the Aernoon Explorers. Dates: June 20–July 29 (closed July 4) Time: 12:00-4:00pm Fee: $300/week 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 Fee: $240/week 3 (week of July 4)

e goal of Explorer Camp is to give campers entering grades 7-8 the opportunity to learn how to take healthy risks while making friends and having fun. Campers travel off campus to attend wilderness excursions, participate in service projects, and enjoy recreational pursuits. Our creative, experienced staff supervises the safe and exciting schedule of varied summer activities, from whitewater raing and rock climbing to museum trips and miniature golf outings. Campers may attend one week or all six, but space is limited so early registration is recommended. e fee covers all costs except spending money for souvenirs when applicable. Due to the nature of the program, all campers should plan to bring a lunch om home every day instead of ordering om our lunch service. Every week is different, and the schedule is available on our website. Note: e activity schedule may change due to weather. On some days, campers are required to arrive before 8:30 a.m., and will arrive at camp aer 4:00 p.m. Parents will be notified about those occasions in advance. Babysitting Workshop Designed for campers entering grades 6-8 who are responsible and enjoy spending time with young children. In this course, campers will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become conﬁdent caregivers for infants, toddlers, and school-age children. ey will interact with children at the GA Child Care Center and learn ways to keep children safe and happy. Hands-on activities and role playing will include topics such as responding to emergencies, making decisions under pressure, communicating with parents, and landing a babysitting job. Participants will receive a certiﬁcate upon successful completion of the course. Dates: July 11-15 Time: 9:00am–12:00pm Fee: $200

For beginners with minimal sewing experience, this workshop is the perfect way to learn how to operate a sewing machine and use various sewing tools, as well as learn foolproof methods for sewing a straight seam and hand stitching. Finished projects include a draw-string bag and a personalized pillow. Open to campers entering grades 6-8. Ready, set, sew! Dates: July 18-22 Time: 9:00am–12:00pm Fee: $250

Orienteering and (Wilderness) Survival Skills is action-packed course introduces the basics of practical outdoor skills and wilderness survival. We learn and apply our new skills in the abundantly varied terrain of the Wissahickon Watershed. Our daily explorations take place within the rich habitat that surrounds the Wissahickon Creek, from Fort Washington State Park along the creek’s path through the dramatic Valley Green section of Fairmount Park. e opportunities for discovery are endless as the creek travels through this forested landscape. We’ll become familiar with elementary survival skills including basic emergency first aid, poison ivy and tick avoidance, sheltering skills and simple shelter building, water purification, fire building, identifying edible and toxic plants, wilderness nutrition, climbing skills, catching fish and other aquatic life, and practical navigation. We learn how the area surrounding the stream can provide most of our survival needs. is course is fast-paced and always outOpen to students entering side. grades 5-8. Advanced Outdoorsmanship is course is fast-paced, ambitious and exciting! It introduces and applies many of the same wilderness and survival skills as the ﬁrst course, while building the challenge and sense of discovery with more advanced climbing and rope skills, whitewater safety, team survival tactics, foul weather survival preparation, use of essential survival tools, orienteering, forest stewardship, and leave-no-trace outdoorsmanship. All necessary equipment will be provided. Safe, resourceful, environmentally friendly exploration will be emphasized. No experience is necessary to enroll in Strike Up the Band. In our ensemble programs, a performance occurs on the last day of class to showcase the students’ talents and hard work. Cape Cod Marine Life Adventure

New England Mountain Adventure Spend four days and three nights exploring the natural wonders in the mountains of New England. Highlights of our trip will include mountain climbing, white-water raing, wildlife tracking, hiking to a dinosaur trackway, and searching for reptiles and amphibians with a herpetologist. We will stay at a beautiful lodge in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. Meals, lodging, and transportation are included in the cost of the program. Day Camp takes full advantage of our 126 acre campus where campers can engage in a variety of athletic, artistic, and educational activities in both group and individual settings that will spark their interest and creativity. With recent renovations complete, our 2011 campers will be the first to play and learn in our redesigned grove, artificial and natural turf fields, and fabulous new tennis courts. Troops will also spend time exploring our wooded trails and the historic Wissahickon Creek which runs right through our campus. Germantown Academy Summer Programs Day Camp has something for every kind of camper– archery, fishing by the creek, Aikido, talent shows, jewelry making and so much more. Whether you sign up for one week or for all six, GA’s Day Camp will give you a summer filled with days of fun!

Traditional Day Camp Director: Rollin Wakeman summer@gacamp.org Shoot archery arrows, make jewelry, take a nature walk in the woods, launch a rocket, climb a rope ladder, catch a fish, play a game of soccer, learn Aikido and canoe in the Wissahickon Creek. is is just a glimpse of what you can do in our Traditional Day Camp program. Campers are divided into troops of 6-12 children. Adult leaders teach our specialty areas, including arts and cras, archery, swimming lessons, field games, tennis, nature, canoeing, and challenge course. Every camper has an instructional swim period in our 25-yard indoor pool every morning and a well-rounded schedule of other camp activities. Each week at Day Camp, there is a new theme with culminating all-camp group activities in the aernoons. (Check our website for this year’s calendar!) A typical aernoon includes a one-hour free choice period, when campers choose from several options ranging from quiet games in the picnic area, to capture the flag, to fishing in the creek. During the afternoon, children participate alongside campers from other troops, including campers enrolled in Aernoon Day Camp. A recreational swim period also occurs in the aernoon which includes use of the diving board for qualified swimmers. For children ages 6 to 12, entering grades 1-6. CITs participate in workshops and discussions to learn about basic child care, behavior management techniques, camp organization, activity planning, and job application and interview skills. For a portion of each day, CITs gain valuable hands-on experience while working in a troop under the guidance of our professional camp staﬀ. is is a selective 6 week program, and enrollment is limited. e deadline for applications and recommendations is April 25, 2011. Preschool Camp (Full Day) Director: Joanna Woodruff joanna.woodruff@gacamp.org Preschool Camp provides a warm, friendly and supportive environment where children ages 4-5 entering Pre-K or Kindergarten feel safe and right at home. Our age-appropriate facilities promote cognitive development through interactive and fun activities. Each week, we introduce a new theme and incorporate lessons around the week’s topic. A typical day at Preschool Camp is filled with childcentered activities including swimming, arts and cras, outdoor play and music, followed by aernoon quiet time. All children participate in daily group swimming lessons. Our professional swim instructors have great success with helping young children reach their full potential in the water. e primary goal of our Preschool Camp is to engage campers in practicing social skills while making friends, learning new things, and having fun.
