The OCV: Five Questions about the Organization behind Virtual Learning Isaac class reporter What is the OCV? The OCV stands for Ottawa-Carleton Virtual. It is the Boards online learning organization. It uses technology to deliver learning opportunities to students who are learning virtually within the OCDSB. It’s acronym OCV stands for Innovative, Creative and Virtual (the O is the O in innovative).
How is the OCV organized? The OCV is divided into six different campuses: • Central-West Elementary Virtual Campus • Downtown Elementary Virtual Campus • Northeast Elementary Virtual Campus • Northwest Elementary Virtual Campus • Southeast Elementary Virtual Campus • Southwest Elementary Virtual Campus
Each campus has a Principal, Vice Principal and a Superintendent of Instruction. For our campus, the principal is Guidgo Ronci, the Vice-Principal is Kathryn Ferguson and our Superintendent of Instruction is Shannon Smith.
How does the OCV support students with special needs? The school that the child is enrolled in will call the student’s parents or
guardian(s) in case of any special needs or requirements the child may have. These needs include (but are not limited to) blindness deaf/hard of hearing and autism. Where necessary they will provide a professional education assistant. Students will follow their IEPs and will have the support they would normally have in in-school learning.

The Parents’ Perspective on Virtual Learning Ubaid class reporter
The COVID-19 Pandemic has caused many students to start attending school from home. I wanted to check and see how it is for parents with their child learning from home, so I created a survey. I received a whole bunch of information, from both primary and junior parents, on how it is for parents in the online learning environment. This article will highlight parents' satisfaction, and the negative and positive prespectives they have about virtural learning.
The sample I received 19 responses in the survey. 11 parents have junior grade students and eight parents have primary students.
What grade is your child in?

Parents´ Satisfaction with their Child’s Learning Online Some parents are satisfied with their childs learning online and some are not satisfied. The results for my survey found that seven parents are satisfied, four are natural, four are dissatisfied, two are very dissatisfied and three are very satisfied. How satisfied are you with your child's learning online? 20 responses
Positive Aspects of Online Learning Some positive aspects of online learning are that now parents dont need to worry about transportation, children are gaining more computer experience, bullying is not an issue anymore and parents are seeing more of what their child is learning.
Negative Aspects of Online Learning Some negative aspects of online learning are parents not being able to work because their child needs help with his/her learning. Parents were also concerned that there is way too much screen time for their child. They also pointed out that their child was being less active and not able to socialize with friends. Online was also seen as having less ability to interact with their teachers.

Helping Your Child’s Virtual Learning Some parents are helping their child by cleaning their child's desk. Having all materials close to their children. Giving reminders to check if he or she submitted all of their work. Being available when the student needs something to be explained to him or her. Making sure their children have large desks for their computer and writing space. Teaching their children more on how to use a computer and getting familiar with it.
Are you regularly helping your child in online learning?

The Principals’ Perspective
An interview with OCV's Guidgo Ronci Justine
class reporter
Needs an introduction, Why did you want to interview him? What where you trying to find out? Why is this important? Do you think there is a positive or negative mindset for parents towards online learning? I think the experience of online learning is an experience in itself.. Parents and educators both find a positive mindset to be important even though we all recognize that online learning has its challenges. We know as a team (students teachers, administrators and parents) that we are able to find solutions to make it work. My experience at the OCV is that I have been surrounded by an amazing community who work so hard to make this a positive experience. I can only say that it is a positive experience.
Is it more enjoyable to be a principal online or in person? Well they both have particular challenges. To be a principal in brick and mortar school you have to be available all the time to rush out of your office to see what is happening in the school, to talk to a student or replace a teacher for an absence. But, there are also challenges being a principal online . I’m not as available to everyone. I can’t come into class whenever I would like, So, it has its challenges as well. But if you ask which one has more of an appeal “it really depends on what you're looking for.”
What are some of the things that you learned from online learning? One of the biggest things that I learned is that everybody I know has a lot of patience and that everybody I’m working with has a passion for making the best of this experience.
What advice would you give to new teachers entering the online environment? The advice I would give to him/her is to pull out all of your patience. I’d also tell them to rely on their passion for learning and to learn from their students.
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
