CREATIVE INTERVENTION

This course gave us the opportunity to reinterpret scientific principles through a series of trials and experiments; developing new interventions until we unravel them. Scents frequently cause you to recapture the overwhelming feelings that you initially experienced years ago. Can we bring back the emotional experience associated to a scent? Course Creative Intervention Duration 3 weeks, individual project Topic Smell and Memory

1

OBSERVATIONS:

#1 NOSTALGIA

These series of experiments helped me conclude that all our senses work together; they have a harmonious effect on our brain.

Do certain scents remind you of your childhood or take you back in time?

OPPORTUNITY: ASSOCIATIVE LEARNING is a process by which one event or item is linked to another through experience. Sights, sounds and scents can all evoke emotionally charged memories.

COLOUR PALLETE

#2 MOODS Scents influence our moods; Why do some people like some scents and some don't?

#3 NOMENCLATURE How would you describe the scent of a flower? Would you use lines, shapes or words.

2

whiff experiencing memories

3

Whiff is a flipbook which works on the principles of associative learning. It helps the user experience the nostalgic memories with the help of smell and visuals.

4

The box has been used for presentation purpose only.

5

Flipbook is packed in a cover which helps the scent remain intact.

Whiff can be sold in souvenir shops. Food and travel were the major elements of the flipbook.

HUMAN PRODUCT INTERFACE

>

Connecting YOU to you You is a concept community designed to connect students. The name is derived from the Chinese word meaning friend. It is a platform where like-minded students find each other so that they can express themselves out clearly through a medium that is most suitable to them.

Course: Human Product/Machine Interface Duration: 3 weeks, team of 2 Topic: Letter Writing

7

QUALITATIVE RESEARCH Understanding the key situations in which any form of handwritten notes are exchanged was a mjor part of our research. Emotional aspect of letters and its gestures also play an important role in the process. Following were the 2 experiments that we conducted to understand user behaviour.

Short motivational notes were given to random students. Here we tried recreating the surprise element of letters.

The pen pal system was introduced where students got a chance to experience the process.

COMMUNICATION STYLE

The personas helped us develop 3 relationships using which people could communicate more comfortably. 1. EPISTOLERY RELATIONSHIP: Traditional pen pals 2. IMAGERY RELATIONSHIP: Communication using images or pictures 3. VISUAL AUDITORY RELATIONSHIP: Communication using any form of media.

COMMUNICATION MATERIAL

Based on the different materials used by the personas, 3 stationery kits were designed.

LACK OF MOTIVATION

Challenges were introduced to motivate the user to communicate in a fun way.

VISUAL AUDITORY

STATIONERY Stationery kits were designed based on the 3 relationships. The communication material used by the user personas helped us form the kits. Specific stationery was chosen so as to make the kit a fun and motivating medium to communicate with their YOU.

The pictures are used for educational purpose only.

11

WEBSITE The website was designed as a medium to connect like-minded students. Here students can find their YOU based on common interests. The website helps exchange basic information like the PO-BOX# for identification before you start writing.

HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN (ONLINE COURSE)

Healthy food options are simple unavailable or the community members lack the knowledge to make the right choices. We used the HCD approach to examine habits, motivations and aspirations of healthy food options in Loni, Pune, India. Course Human Centered Design (HCD) Duration 7 weeks (online course) Design Team 2 product design students & 1 graphic design student Location Loni, Pune

13

INSPIRATION PHASE We started off with planning our research, conducting interviews using different interactive techniques and spending time with our user for qualitative and quantitative research. A guided tour of their houses reveled their habits and values.

N

Personal interviews helped us get qualitative data.

Our field work 7 weeks, 8 interviews; 6 users and 2 experts

Flash cards with images of things around the topic were made to help people express thoughts that may be harder to talk about.

14

IDEATION PHASE We started with sharing what we had learned with our team. Charts were made to make sense of the vast amount of data and identify opportunities of design. The 2 main areas of this phase were; clustering data to come up with THEMES and creating HOW MIGHT WE questions.

POTENTIAL THEMES

Community functions on high levels of interaction.

Average cost of a meal for a family of 4 is Rs.35.

No proper system of keeping an inventory.

They believe that healthy food is home cooked food.

15

IMPLEMENTATION PHASE Various tools like storyboarding, live prototyping and co-creation sessions helped us give our soluions a tangible feel.

Each container will be interactive in a way that it will depict the level and nature of content through colours and symbols. Also ingredients of each food category will have a distinct colour as we encourage a balanced diet within their resources. This concept will help the user maintain a track of their inventory and hence manage monthly expenses.

EYEWEAR DESIGN (INTERNSHIP)

This was a concept based project developed while working with an eye-ware startup company. The brief was to design a frame for a female with round features. Part time Internship Duration 6 months, individual project Topic Frames for round face

17

CREATING THE PERFECT FIT DESIGNING FRAMES FOR ROUND FEATURES 14mm

ITERATION 1: The frame is too thin and round; it adds to the rotundity of the face

ITERATION 2: The nose bridge area is reduced for the frame to sit perfectly on the nose.

ITERATION 3: Brow height is reduced and the frame is given more of a squarish look.
